View Full Version : what kind of computer do you own?

Just wondering what the forum opinions are on computer brands and the most used brands amongst us. If you own more than one computer, select the one you like the most.

I hate HP, we own a Compaq (notebook), one HP, and I think, about 2 eMachines. The other one was some weird creation of my dad's.

I want a dell though...

it's hard to poll when we might have multiple machines (In my family we have: a trash80, mac SE30, mac preforma, mac power something (pretty old), mac laptop, some freaky old IBM, AST PC, HP *barf*, and three homebuilt PCs that we use... so that's what I put...

I will only build my own, always have.

I recommend gateway to family members though, that way I am not the 24/7 tech support.

Wow, it is pretty interesting that most of us built our own computers. My computer is an 18 hundred dollar hottie.

Here are my specs:

P4 3.0C GHz w/ HT 800MHz FSB
1Gig (2x512) PC3200 (DDR400) Kingston ram (forget specs and latency)
Sapphire Raedon 9800 Pro 128megs DDR
52x Liteon CD drive
Audigy 2 ZS sound card
5.1 Channel Logitech speakers (5 speakers, one subwoofer - this thing is LOUD)
Samsung SyncMaster 173s (17inch LCD)
52xCD RW DVD combo drive - generic
Got to love the 3.5 inch
Antec TRU480BLU Power supply, 480watts
Western Digital Raptor 74 Gig 10000 RPM serial ATA HD
Sexy generic $4 keyboard - no BS keys.
Logitech MX310 Optical mouse
Lian Li PC-60 (I believe) case.
Intel D875PBZ Server mobo - no onboards - lots of other great features.

Using a questionable version of XP Home.

I am going to put a plexi window in it as well as install my old CD RW / DVD combo drive when I get a dremmel.. May even decide to... mod it to the extreme o_o

My friend is going to give me a free 500 GB external HD for acting as a backup server sometime here.

Well I didn't quite build mine myself, I bought if from some guy who worked out of his basement and custom built to your spec (and he would give advice).

Alas, he is out of business and I need a new machine. Currently have a Celeron 300Mhz overclocked to 450. Circa 1999 vintage.

Looking to get a AMD Athlon 64 3000 or so. 1 gig memory, 120 gig SATA drive, recycle monitor/keyboard/speakers/CD drives from my current machine. Already bought an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb on sale at Best Buy in prep. for the upgrade.

Just got to find a good mail order house to get what I want. There is a promising outift that is local, but they are a bit weak on their Athlon 64 line up. I'll call them and try to work something out.

I have only been procrastinating 2 months so far  , so maybe come fall I will actually get motivated.

Oh if you're ever looking for parts. Newegg.com is a great place. Free shipping on almost everything. I'm not sure if it is free to Canada though. It is to the US however.

At home I use a 4 year old Dell...though at the time it was their best offering. I was interested in using my computer for audio recording, installing software and using a USB-friendly mixer after a few years, but when I did a little digging to see if my computer was fast enough I discovered that the motherboard they used wasn't as good as one would assume - something about the bus speed being 33 MHz I think rather than 66 or more, but it's been a while and I can't recall the details now.

I think that Dell, Gateway, or whoever will spare no expense to cut corners if they think they can. Knowing what you want, educating yourself, and either getting someone to build what you want or doing it yourself may be worth it in the long run...and building it's a snap if you already enjoy torturing yourself over OS installations. That's what I plan to do next time around, anyway.

Updated 2/1/05: I now have an HP Pavillion Photosmart Media Center PC m1170N desktop, $909.00, which means I now finally have the capability to burn cds. It feels like i'm driving a new car, with windows xp and ipod, and visuals, I love it. It doesn't come with a monitor, had to purchase a Sony lcd screen for $249.

http://reviews.cnet.com/HP_Media_Center_PC_m1170n_Photosmart_PC___P4_530_3_GHz/4507-3118_7-31163839.html?tag=tab

I still have an old 98 IBM Aptiva, Pentium 2, it still works so I haven't retired it yet. The monitor was on sale at circuit city, its a NEC Multisync 77 F, printer is an HP psc 950 all in one fax, copier, printer, scanner.

I used to work in electronics, so if I need to I can build pcs, but have built my own basic dos computer. It had the Windows 3.1 on it, thats how long ago that was. I simply put the mother boards in the right slots, put the battery, fan, hardware and wiring in, and made a few hookups and loaded the software. If I need to I can solder, install and remove components, read schematics, blueprints. But I have not really made building pcs a project other than to understand the basics.

I built my dual Athlon 2600+ rig with Linux and I use that most of the time. I also have an iBook, a Compaq Presario running Linux that I use as a file/web/print/dns server/NAT gateway, and an older Dell Optiplex that I have laying around that I am trying to find a use for. When I move to my dorm room, I have a Linksys WRT54GS running a modded firmware to use as the NAT gateway, and the Optiplex might become my web server.

EDIT: EEW, grammer > me.

I have assembled my own PCs for the last fifteen years and I intend to continue the habit. I always strive for bang for the buck so I rarely own state of the art rigs - I tend to buy when things are just about to get phased out when their prices suddenly plummet down to earth. :)

My present rig:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton oc'ed to 3000+
MSI K7N2 delta L motherboard
512 MB DDR400 x 2
ATI Radeon 9600XT / 128MB
Viewsonic PF790 19" aperture grille monitor

Asus 16X dvdrom drive
Sony 52X cdwriter
Enermax 350W psu

I always used to build my own pc's, but you can't build a notebook by your self all that easy, but after a week I took it apart completely and re-assembled it, kind of a ritual I have with new electronics :)

AMD Athlon64 3000+ on an Asus K8V-SE Deluxe in a tower case that I think Alienware used to use... very lightweight. Antec True550 550W power supply, ATI Radeon 9800Pro 256MB, 1GB DDR400 RAM, 2x120GB Serial ATA HDDs (Maxtor w/ fluid dynamic bearings, yay quiet :)), and now a Plextor PX-712A DVD+-RW/CDRW drive :D

I started out buying prebuilt, but found out rapidly that I didn't like it. I do too much messing around with my computer. I tend to reformat my hard drive 1-2 times a year because I have messed something up, learned something new or I just feel like it :) With the prebuilt systems you never seem to get all of the software that you need to bring the system back up properly. So now I build my own.

Current system: AMD XP 3000+, ATI Radeon, DVD-RW, LS-120, Zip, Bunch of other add on's, 3HD's, 1 Raid and a Tiger switch. Main OS is XP Pro. MS-DOS 6.X is running on one HD (I love my old games :) ) The thrd HD is for testing other OS's.

Currently have:

Wait a minute? You can buy a pre-built PC? ;)

My friends and I have always traded our old computer parts like Pokemon cards. The resulting beasts will typically get pawned off on spouses and family members. . . I'm somewhat stingy, though, so I kind of take what I can get sometimes.

I'm getting a little frustrated with my current setup, since I made a compromise with my wife. Her box is used entirely for school, so she gets the nicer monitor while I get a nasty 15" cast-off from a dead IBM Aptiva (this monitor is from Satan). However, I get my Athlon 750 (Slot A, baby!) while she's stuck with a slow-ass K6 500.

Yeah, I seriously need to drop some coin one of these days. My computer RULED when I first put it together. I'd never seen Half-Life run so well.

[edit] Since I first put together my box, I've replaced the motherboard once, processor once, all my original RAM sticks (no idea what went wrong with them, but at least my computer posts every time I turn it on, now), and (naturally) have upgraded my video card a couple times now. That damn Slot A has kept me from upgrading during this process, since I refused to fork out for a new processor AND motherboard simultaneously.

AMD Athlon 2600+ @1.92ghz(No overclock here)
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
2x512mb RAM
Radeon 9200 128mb
1x SATA 80gig
1x IDE 40gig
54x CD-ROM
crappy CD-RW
old CD-ROM/DVD
PSU: 350W
Thermaltake Xaser III full tower case
I don't have an IDE controller so I have to swap the CD-RW with the DVD as needed. I just can't bring myself to spend money right now when all I have to do is switch them.

My recent upgrade was like that, having to do the whole cpu, board and ram all in one go is costly ($650AU for me). Sucks having to change for all the different component formats.

For myself, I only use machines I build. At work I can't do this. We have had the best luck, stability wise, with IBM M-Pros and Z-pros. Now our main supplier uses dell and they seem pretty good also but have not stood the test of time.

We also have some HPs but they are highly controled by AVID so they are quite unlike an off the shelf HP/compaq both of which I despise. My experience with Toshiba has also been quite bad. Gateway was worse.

I used to always build my own machines, and those for friends/family. Now I can't be bothered and don't like doing free tech support for said friends/family.
Just go into a shop and give a list of my requirements and have them build it.

currently got 2 machines
#1) ye olde pentium 1 233 mhz I keep because it has ISA slots and has a midi card
i need for some software on it and the several 100 unfinished songs tied to the sequencer dsoftware/card on it.

Well my current computer is also the last oneI will "buy" vs. build.
Gateway. Never again. Computer's not actually too bad now, after they replaced the CPU box twice and my graphics card three times, and monitor once, and that only took about 89 calls to tech support...

In fact, why didn't you people warn me before I bought this thing? I can't believe how insensitive you are. And to think I trusted you!

Than again I bought it over a year ago and joined the group yesterday.

I voted Mac even though I don't have one at the moment; I had a 15" powerbook with backlit keyboard and super-sexy aluminum case at my last job.. they nearly had to send the cops to pry it from my cold dead hands when I quit. :D

I'm in no way a materialistic person but if I had a chance to grab one thing from a burning building, someone's baby or a shiny Powerbook, it'd be a tough choice.
