I'm searching for some board and/or card games that, unlike chess, bridge, and other, don't have to be thouroughly studied first to be very good at them. Just the type of game that relies simply on intelligence and quick wits, not on knowing previously researched strategies. It would probably involve infinite number of possible moves in every turn, but i don't know.
Anyone?
I'm sick of dumbasses beating me at chess, just because they know what is "Hedgehogs Defense" or "Spanish Game".

Settlers of Catan is great.

There is always risk and axis and allies.

There is this card game which is great. It wouldn't really work online (if that is what you are looking for) but you start out by dealing 7 or 8 cards from 3 or 4 decks all shuffled together. If someone touches their cards before the game starts you give them a penalty card. Once the game starts there is no talking, if someone talks they get a penalty card unless they say "Point of Order" which is used to clarify a rule, and can only be ended by saying "End of P of O." Everyone puts a card down in the same manner as crazy 8s. If an ace is played it skips a turn (which can result in a penalty card if someone doesn't know the rule for playing out of turn). Jacks reverse direction. Also, if an incorrect penalty card is given out, that is a penalty card too. If a person only has one card left they have to say "last card" or they get a penalty card. The person with no cards left wins the game and gets to pick a new rule for the next round. But it can't be a rule that targets one player. And after the first round is over, you tell everyone all the rules.

It's actually a lot of fun because some people catch on right away, some people get all passive aggressive and some people just flip out because they can't be in control. Plus, as you play more rounds things just get crazy.

I've played something like that. It really gets frenzied late in the game! I was good at that, never got too upset, or frustrated like the others.
But, poker is still the best.
Though, i took a look at this go stuph. It seems alright. Not too much rules.

I like that game where you make up phony definitions for words, phrases, etc. I can't remember the name of it. Anways, I rule at that game.

Stratego's awesome too.

stratego is very enjoyable

stratego is nothing like risk.. but my experience with risk has been limited but based on my experience they're not that similar except for the conquering the opponent part.

Hearts is always good.

I know a great variation on it called "Slippery Anne" where you have a revolving trump suit, as well as the hearts and queen of spades being penalty cards.

I absolutely love literati on yahoo. It is the best game that doesn't require strategy or prerequisite knowledge; only a decent vocabulary . . . PM me (anyone) and I'd be happy to set up a time for me to kick your ass. ;)

If you want a good card game... try Fluxx (http://www.wunderland.com/LooneyLabs/Fluxx/Default.html)
There are 23 different ways to win, no two cards are alike, and the rules can change constantly. (thinks about that phrase, and leaves it)
It's a lot of fun, and really easy to learn. All the rules are on the table at any given time, all you have to do is follow them.

Wow you havent heard that quote around on the internet?

I was just using it as a 'I am ready to kick your ass' type quote, assuming you would have come across it, but see the link (and quote) below)

"'All Your Base' was interesting in that it demonstrated the power of the Internet to quickly spread idiosyncratic messages that would never have been covered by the traditional mass media. Although the fad has since died down, the phrase continues to be one of the most commonly quoted examples of "Engrish." The phrase is also often used as a battle cry on many competitive video games, particularly ones played over the Internet."

Edit : it is quite an interesting read and surprising just how often this has been referenced in tv or (particularly) computer games since then!
