Hey, I don't think there are all that many Bay Area people on this here forum, but just in case (or if people really like to travel), I'd like to formally propose a meet up! I ahve a relatively small, shitty apartment in Berkeley, but I'd still be willing to host some kind of get-together. Or if anyone has any better ideas/locations, that would be fine too!
I'm not the world's greatest hostess, but I can guarantee import beers and perhaps some bagel bites or taquitos or something. Wooo, what a party!
So, would anyone be interested, and if so, when?

I'm on the penninsula, certainly close enough to consider such a meeting!
If it's only a few people, we could just meet somewhere in between.
I'm game!

@cerene: Meeting in the middle sounds fine to me -- good excuse to get out of Berkeley!
@booyalab: How does trading places sound? :p I see you're in Minnesota, and I'm seriously considering moving to there after college (Twin Cities area specifically)!

Any more interest these days? I'd come down to the bay. (or pretty much anywhere on the west coast except maybe very far south)

May is better for me seeing as how I probably won't live here anymore starting in June. That said, this doesn't have to be planned around me, by any means.

I just bought a brand new couch and I have my own apartment. We should have a meetup. I live in Berkeley, only four blocks from a BART station, so that should/might make things convenient for people. If it's creepy to go to a complete stranger's house, then we can go somewhere else, like maybe go see It Came from Outer Space! in 3-D at the Pacific Film Archive in a few weeks. I've never attended or hosted a meetup before, so if it's awkward and boring, I apologize in advance.
But then there's always booze. Booze are good.
Um, I don't think there are a whole lot of Bay Area people around here, so of you feel like shelling out the big bucks for a plane/train ticket just to come out here to have a look at my somewhat messy apartment, you're welcome to. ...But then I'd have call you crazy.

If you schedule a Bay Aryan meetup closer to Christmas, I'd totally go. I'll be out there anyway.
Which Berkeley BART station do you live near, the fairly posh North Berkeley one, downtown, or the ghetto ass Berkeley stop?

From a quick look, plane tickets are $380+ and amtrak is $180+ (both seem retardedly expensive). I guess I'd rent a car.

Oh yeah! My bad. I meant "ghetto-Ashby".
And yeah, North Berkeley is way posh relative to Ashby. I bet you typically have far fewer crackheads on your lawn after 11pm than someone living near Ashby.
I used to live on Marin, up in the hills. Not exactly the same neighborhood, but nearby. Hey - at least you probably live within an easy distance of Good Vibes!

Heh. He's talking about a county north of S.F., I'm talking about a particular street in Berkeley. There's a crazy roundabout with a fountain in the middle of it, surrounded by statues of bears that look like mice. It's a rockin' cool street.

Not Muir Woods, but I've had some pretty awesome rain hikes through Sequoia National Park (the park entrance is about 30 minutes away from the house where I grew up). Giant sequoias walling in a lush meadow, a vividly grey sky, cool rain, moss and ferns everywhere, no one around... Beautiful.

Awesome. I've only been there in the summer during good weather, which was on purpose because it was part of a motorcycle ride. I've driven my bike all over the southern sierras-- such beautiful country. I'll take a long weekend, and drive to Porterville or Visalia after work to stay overnight in a motel. Then ride up, into and all over the various mountain roads through various small-to-very-small towns: Needles (which also has killer rock climbing, btw), Kernville, Johnsondale, Caliente, King's Canyon, California Hot Springs. Repeat for a couple days then come home. Highway 190 between Porterville and the Needles is one of my favorite stretches of pavement to ride anywhere. :happpy:

Well, google shows it as being right on the 198 on the way to the national park, so I'm sure I drove through it, but I didn't stop there. Once out of the valley and into the foothills, it's all beautiful up there.

Yeah, everyone's welcome. We're all kinda imposing on OutMyWindow though ... so realistically, what's the limit for the number of invites? If we end up going over the number who can fit in OMW's place, can we all fit in some place like the Starry Plough or Becketts?

Well, the Albatross might be a nerd bar, but how's their bangers and mash? And what is their mastery level of spoken Irish? I might be biased towards the Starry Plough because they have a big mural on their wall honoring my great-granduncle.

Well, yeah ... I guess it would depend on your comfort level in inviting total strangers into your apartment. Personally, that would probably top out for me around three or four people.

That is probably one of maybe two places in the US that is worse than where I am housing-price-wise. I had to stay in a cheap motel (and had I known more, I would have stayed at an extended-stay cheaper hotel in downtown, but I was a n00b) for a month before I could afford the rent and deposit, which is beyond crazy. Camping seems like a reasonable option up there.

And a bit OT, but I just thought I'd give Roger a bit of perspective: I live in Berkeley and pay $1250 a month for a two-bedroom apartment. I don't need the extra bedroom, but I liked the building (except that I can't have pets, which sucks and is completely unrelated to the rest of what I'm telling you), and it's located very close to bus and subway lines, which is a major bonus. Depending on which part of Berkeley/the East Bay you live in, things can be somewhat cheaper or much more expensive. Are you moving to the East Bay, SF, the peninsula, etc.?

The job's in Marin. It's Americorps, which means slave wages. Ideally I'd be living in the San Rafael area, but I suppose I could commute across the Bay if I could find a cheap place in Berkeley or Oakland that would justify spending that much on gas. Or SF, but they must have streets paved in gold based on the rents I'm seeing advertised there.

Camping seems like a reasonable option up there.
You could always go camp at the Albany Bulb for free. That is, if you have the local knowledge of the area to know where it is, and where you can safely stay. You might not want to camp in the easy to locate areas of the Bulb. And in the event of a serious earthquake, it wouldn't be the place to be. Other than that, it's a real cheap option.
Easy advice on how to find it: locate the Buchanan St. exit in Berkeley, and turn on to the area where there's a parking lot and not Buchanan St. Walk on to the area that looks sorta like a park. Explore.

Organization is overrated and complicated organization is worse. I know you're an INTP, so I didn't expect such things. ;)
My idea of a humorously-good-time would be to locate a 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood and drive it down Lombard Street.

That's actually not all that bad. Down here you're looking at cheap-cheap places in that price range and below, but the sky is the limit above that. I hate the anti-pet thing that you get almost everywhere, too. My kitty needs a place to live, too.

The Japanese Tea Garden (http://www.inetours.com/Pages/SFNbrhds/Japanese_Tea_Garden.html) is supposed to be interesting as well, although I'd expect the prices to be pretty bad. And of course, there's always Ghirardelli (http://www.ghirardellisq.com/ghirardellisq/).

To be honest, I have no clue what's going on with this meet up right now... and I have a creeping feeling that it's not because people are planning via PM, but more along the lines of us all being INTPs. But at any rate, I'd be down for any one of those as well, although particularly the Asian Art Museum.
As far as scheduling goes, I'm heading down to Southern California on the 31st, and I'll have to work either Wednesday or Thursday for a few hours, but other than that, I've got nothing else going on.

Edit: Hey, I just read your intro thread. I go to the SRJC too. Psych major here. How long have you been attending?
Small world! I've been at the JC since the spring... 2006 semester. I'm an English major, who hasn't been taking too many English classes - there are so many other classes to take! How long have you been there? Do you like it?
If this ever does get going, I'll be in the City the 26th through the 28th.

Yeah really! Never thought I'd meet someone who goes to my college, haha. And there really are so many other (and so many interesting) classes to take, and I've only done Psych 1A, heh. I've been attending since summer of '06, although I only just finished my second full time semester. And yeah, I like it myself, great campus and library. At least in Santa Rosa, I haven't seen the Petaluma one.

Okay, how about we try to actually get this together and schedule something?
How's 1pm on Saturday the 29th for people? We could hang out at a pub for a while, see who manages to show up, and then plan on where to go from there.
Would this be better for schedules during the week or on a weekend? How many of us are on break from work / school? I am, so my schedule is pretty flexible.

Don't plan any of the 'main' events around me since I'm not 21, but I plan on visiting the Asian Art Museum and possibly (depending on traffic and parking) the Japanese Tea Garden anytime between the 27th and 30th. If anyone wants to join in, you're more than welcome.
By the way, anyone have an idea about what traffic will look like? It's probably a nightmare right now, but I'm hoping it'll settle down after Christmas.

Proposed Meet Up:
Date: Saturday the 29th
Time: 12:30 pm
Place: Outside Concord BART station
Details: Go get lunch at a local pub, see who all manages to show up, and where we want to go from there
Anonymous and myself might be able to bring a car. Depending on how many of those we have and how many people turn up, it might open up some possibilities for what to do. Otherwise, we'd be limited by BART.

I will be there the evening of the 28th, late. I have positively no clue where to go from there as I'm not terribly familiar with the area, nor do I know where this station is, or whether or not I should rent a car. I'm not sure where to stay, either.
EDIT: I booked a place on the bay and a rental car for that weekend.
PM me any contact information/directions I may need, since I'm not sure I'll be able to identify all/any of you.

If that happens, I'll break the ice. In a crowd of introverts, I can fake an E.
Anyway, I'll be heading down from Napa and I have room to provide area rides if people need one.
Wolf is heading up from closer to the Bay Bridge area, and he has wheels. If you could use a ride, speak up. Otherwise, we're meeting outside Concord BART on the parking lot side of the station, so ... it's about as accessible by public transportation as you could ask for.
Look for a guy holding a sign that says "INTP". That'll be me.

So are we meeting on Friday instead of Saturday due to Wolf's availability, or is it still on for Saturday? Either way works for me, although I'd like to know a day in advance so I can alert my employer.
Also, I'm heading down from Santa Rosa (Sonoma county), but I'm pretty bad at getting around in the Bay Area. Last time I was there I went the wrong way on 580 and ended up in Pleasanton instead of San Francisco. So Oso or Wolf, would either of you be open to me meeting up with you and just catching a ride for the rest of the way, or would it be better for me to bring my car (possible designated driver and all that)?

You won't be able to identify me as easily as Oso here, but I generally wear mostly black and khaki. If the weather remains cool there, I will probably be wearing my forest-green Bonfire snowboarding outer-coat (it has orange tags identifying it as such).

I will be available Saturday - I'm flying in from Phoenix late Friday night (I land just before 11P).

I had no plan to spend my entire weekend with people, either. The plan was to go to the meetup, hang out with my artist buddy for a while, and mostly hole up in my room watching the rain fall. I hope you still have rain there.

We're pulling long hours and at least Saturdays at work for the last couple months, so I'm also usually quite protective of my little bit of time off. In this case, it was just luck coupled with a friend being in town at the same time (he has been begging me to join him for a few weekends now), so the stars are aligning in such a way that I have reasons to go up there, even though it sorta screws up my weekend (only my second Saturday off in two months!).

Hmm . . . seems as though this could be a freakish bunch, but a local meetup for we west-coast folks (inclusive of the visitors -- namely Atilla!) could be fun.
I'd prefer to stay away from the East Bay (that place sucks; no offense, outmywindow) and think the actual city of San Francisco would be a better and more centralized place for this potential gathering. Something about too many bridges. . .
Anyway. I think I might recommend the Connecticut Yankee: http://www.yelp.com/biz/connecticut-yankee-san-francisco#hrid:Rb7WkjHGCmuo5T39UzJU9w/query:yankee which has great atmosphere, great food, fun drinks and even outdoor heating for the icky smokers among us. But that's just an idea.
We almost would need a planner-type INTJ to help out with the details. Maybe this why there aren't more INTPC meets. :)

It was the closest to the route my buddy will be taking and closer to this meetup, so it seemed sensible for my targets. The city itself tends to be way too crowded for using automobiles, or so I recall from the last time I was there when someone else drove me about. I would never want to drive there, at all.

The west coast (and California, for that matter) is much larger than I think most people realize. It'd be one hell of a road trip to go hang out where I live for most CA-based members, yet everyone from other places imagines the population centers are close together. I'd be up for coordinating one in my area of the state, if there was interest.

I finally made it, $4 worth of tolls later. Silly freeway at night in the rain, where I couldn't figure out how to get off and go the other way... Ended up following some weird back road in the dark on an island, turning around at the end, and coming back. Almost slid into someone, but I avoided that and finally made it here!
Now, if anyone joins me to Concord, I hope at least one knows how to get there... I also ended up with a free upgrade on my car, so I have a full-size.

Oh, so you've met the Alameda?
No, met the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, or so says google maps. I was on the Nimitz Freeway (heretofore I shall refer to it as the "Nimrod" Freeway) and couldn't see any exit/interchange marked "North" or "East", so I ended up on the bridge.
It looks like I'm in the Bay Area's version of Lemon Grove or Logan Heights, or something like that... I thought this would be far enough from Oakland to not be quite like that.
If you end up needing directions, give me a call. I'll probably be able to figure out how to get you unlost. That being said, usually Mapquest is pretty reliable in the area.
I hit the bank for toll money in case I get lost again. I also have a handheld GPS that helps me in my travels, I just couldn't watch it and the road very well in the rain at night in a completely foreign place at freeway speeds. But, I'll keep it in mind (and you're now in my phone book).
I already miss home and the sweet, sweet cheap mexican food. Instead I paid too much for a BLT. Though I admit it was probably the most bacon-filled artery-clogging BLT I've ever consumed, I definitely would have preferred a Pokez Chile Relleno...

So, the itinerary:
1. Meet up at BART
2. Walk to Czech pub for a tasty meal with Pilsner Urquelle and Spaten on tap.
3. Drive to the "Costco of Liquor" aka Beverages & More
4. Hike around a landfill turned art installation (pictures might explain better)
2.5 and 3.5 don't exist, but if they did there might have been underage drinking

Here's a big-brother aerial view of the points of interest in our meet-up:
Start point (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.973599,-122.029229&spn=0.001074,0.002116&z=19)
This is where we met. You can't actually see if from above, but below that bridge right in the middle is a news stand, where I found three nerds standing around talking. OMW was fashionably-late.
Food ... (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.973847,-122.038469&spn=0.001074,0.002116&z=19)
...is an important part of a balanced diet.
ATM (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.976367,-122.034035&spn=0.001074,0.002116&z=19)
This is the location of some of the world's loudest ATMs. This is also the location where Oso and OMW withdrew money to settle the tab for lunch. A pair of girls ganged up on OMW and somehow got in line between her and Oso. On that street corner I offered and they all accepted some caked white powder that I was carrying in my pocket.
Cars (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.974249,-122.03009&spn=0.001074,0.002116&z=19)
This is where we split up into two parties to head to Albany. Car 1 was Anon, Oso, and andif. Whether they had as exciting a trip as we did is uncertain.
At this point the paths split, so I'll give our half of it.
Though I will not specify the exact location, somewhere in here OMW uttered a pun. The sad fact is that I thought of it before she said it, so I feel just as guilty.
Onramp (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.965989,-122.056174&spn=0.008594,0.01693&z=16)
I missed one, then found this handy onramp. Had to fight to get into the correct lane, though.
Turnaround (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.863165,-122.035296&spn=0.004303,0.008465&z=17)
This is where I turned around after realizing I was going the wrong way. OMW and I were having far too engaging a conversation for my lack of mental presence, plus Bay Area freeways are evil and lead you astray.
Senseless traffic (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.862928,-122.211142&spn=0.017211,0.03386&z=15)
This is where we pondered the concept of Fish Ranching in a traffic jam. I just want to see how they tie their lassos.
Change of plans (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.855,-122.236376&spn=0.017213,0.03386&z=15)
Thanks to the above, we ditched the freeway and took 13 north through this posh region of town. The tour was fun.

This is where booze was puchased. I ended up walking around while they browsed and bought. Sadly, they didn't have the right vintage of my wine of choice, but then I wouldn't have wanted to consume it all myself.
Parking (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.88952,-122.315238&spn=0.001075,0.002116&z=19)
Location of the parking lot where we left our two cars before the hike.
Albany Bulb (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.889283,-122.321863&spn=0.034411,0.06772&z=14)
One of the Bay Area's most scenic dumps, this is where we wandered about.

At this point OMW realizes there may be some ulterior motive for Oso's choice of this location. We also take some pictures at this lovely skate bowl. How it ended up here is uncertain. Beyond this, we made a contribution here.
Main Art Region (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=37.892327,-122.325567&spn=0.001075,0.002116&z=19)
If you pan right and follow the beach down, this is where a high concentration of art on the island resides. Massive refuse-based sculptures and paintings are found all along this beach, many of which are clearly visible in these photographs.
After this, we returned to the parking lot and went our separate ways.

Special recognition for the notable quantities of awesome goes to Oso for both coordinating the event and knowing cool places to go that fit with our specific mixture of interests.

Supposedly I'll be vacationing on the beach somewhere in NC for the summer, so it might be possible. The detangler in question was never a thought on my mind, so I think there is a story behind this, perhaps?

A bit of an altercation between two NC-meetup-goers which involved the detangler. Neither intended to detangle anything with it.
Depending on the area, we're between 3 and 6 hours from the coast. Let me know when you're going, maybe we can get out that way.

Because the way they record the views is by strapping a special camera to the roof of a vehicle and driving it around (I've seem 'em doing it around Berkeley). Seeing as how there aren't any roads in this particular area, and that the trails themselves are very rough and narrow at times, it'd be pretty difficult to acquire imagery using their current system.

When I shot this I knew it looked a bit off, because my phone kept having trouble with the fact the light was behind the subjects and would flash up/down in brightness. You also get to see part of one of my fingers (index, I presume) because it was in the way.
This is a picture of the crew sans myself, for obvious reasons (mainly a lack of duct tape to pull a MacGuyver). They're standing on top of what appeared to be a skate bowl. Left-to-Right: andif, Anon, OMW, and Oso.

This was much, much bigger than it looks in this picture. Anon, the tallest of the group, could walk under it effortlessly and probably couldn't have touched the platform had he reached up. These things were absolutely immense.
I found this (http://www.acme.com/jef/photos/bulb.html) page that shows a bunch of pictures of the artwork there.

He might have been demolished by the police attack... As you can see from the pictures, when more homeless people lived there it was in much better general repair. In fact, I think we missed a great deal of the dump because the aerial photographs show uniform patterns in the south, west, and central sections of the bulb.
BTW: I could post a GPS log of our trek...

We only hiked through a small portion of the Bulb, but I tried to steer the group towards the more well-known locations.
And yeah, it's very transitory. That is the nature of the place. Andif, you missed the flotation men. Generally if you see something you like there, enjoy it. In another year's time it might be gone. BTW, I wouldn't really call the Bulb "a dump". It's built on an industrial landfill, but people don't actively dump garbage there, and it was never a consumer dump - (ie: lightbulbs, dirty diapers, Snickers wrappers, etc.) It's actually somewhat on the hazy hippie border between being a no man's land and a city park.

Here's a link to a Flickr set I made. It starts out with 14 cell phone pictures from the meet up, and then I included another 18 pictures of the Bulb taken last year with a real camera on a day that benefited from better lighting.

Cal = the University of California, Berkeley, aka California. You are probably thinking of the Cal Academy of Art in SF. They are not one and the same. The latter is a well-respected art school, while the former is the number two university in the world according to the London Times.

Well, I feel like I'm just not being understood or even heard. I feel so unappreciated and it's just really starting to mess with my spirit.
