Can the rhythm of music increase your concentration on a particular task...in particular math?

I think it can, but its one of those things that is different for everybody. For example, I know that when I am working on some form of art I like something with a very obvious beat, which my instrumental hip-hip took care of. For many other things, I like quiet, soothing music in the background. Haven't found anything that works particularly well with math yet, though.

Someone, I think int, read the book about Your Brain on Music. Maybe he could shed some light on this.

There are people like me who enjoy music but cannot concentrate on other activities requiring a good level of cognition, like reading or solving difficult problems. I like to attribute it to focusing too intently on the music, analyzing it as I'm listening, so that another intellectual task requiring actual attention is nearly impossible to act on.
