View Full Version : What is up with that avatar??

I did an advanced (ooooh) search and cannot believe my eyes that no one ever started such a thread.
My avatar came from a quick search of my images folder. It is "Oat Willie" and I had a cat by that name once. Pretty lame, but E. Zedo already claimed an Alex avatar. My second choice was a Tron avatar but I don't like when people laugh at me. I will go with a Homer/Mr. Sparkle one eventually.
Not an all-inclusive list, but I also like the FG evil monkey avatar, the m1911 one, and MG's new FG Canada one. Utopmk's bothers me because I keep thinking it is Squidward out of the corner of my eye.

I think I mentioned this in my "I'm new" post, but here goes... I figured a zebra is about as likely to be found in snow as an INTP is to be found anywhere, so it seemed fitting.
By the way, I really like Elro's. Linus is my favorite.

Oh man. I have never noticed that about your avatar and probably never would have unless you had done gone pointed it out. It wicked sucks that my analytical skills are top notch but my visual observations are so narrowly focused when not engaged on a specific mission.
I know it is a vBulletin issue, but it would be cool to have an avatar mouse rollover explanation option for those of us who have the curiosity bug.

Ahhh yes. The Ronco dude. (Nod to Google) The whole deal with this thread was to lure garak in and get him to divulge who that was on his avatar without me looking like some durn fool who wasn't all hip with pop culture. Now to just play along like I knew it all along and everyone will be none the wiser....
Oh crap! Did I just type all that out loud??
My new one seems to be causing quite kerfuffle. Which is weird because it's not the kerfuffle I had in mind. People just like the monkey.

But that particular hyena is cute. I'm repeating myself here.
I've been wondering how long it takes from the CIA to connect the dots between my avatar, my post about my "inner terrorist" and my post about "dubya is the root of all evil".

I think it's the "outer terrorist" they worry about.
Plus, we all know that someone from the land of Santa couldn't hurt anyone. Well, at least physically. Ok, at least not without a some sort of safety word.

Mine is Dali's Meditative Rose. I took 1 art class in H.S. for about 6 weeks before I was placed in a 8 period schedule. (No lunch/No study/8 classes) We had just started a research project and I had gotten really interested in Dali's work. I ended up taking an afterschool study with the teacher. It helped me relax after spending 7 hours of lectures and reading and math and labs. I'm rambling...
The fact that it's colorful helped me choose that one too. It's been one of my favorites.

Ok,
Poop! I did have a simple very beautiful butterfly that looked like it could only have been painted by an artist. (I can't find it right now, but will put it back as soon as I do).
This was a play on the chaos theory. The butterfly effect. That butterfly did not look as if it were a product of chaos (but of course it was). And a single beautiful chaotically produced butterfly can have a huge effect on weather (in theory). So it's Creative Chaos. See? Wasn't that really, really, a neat play on concepts? I thought so. :D) (Just trying to be arrogant) ;)

In all seriousness, I wouldn't mind at all if the forum non-NTs would hang around just to say "you're smart" or "we wuv you," but debating them is completely intellectually unrewarding because instead of challenging us and offering complementary insights or information, they sound like toddlers.
NF "Why is the sky blue?"
NT "Light refraction"
NF "I'm not so sure about that"
NT "Okay."
I've read just enough posts by NFs here stating something like "I'm just not sure about this..." Well you shouldn't be sure about it, but don't come complaining to us!

Oh yes, and let me add. I am not here to debate why the sky is blue with you guys. I could care less. I'm on an NF mission, which is to understand you. To understand how the NT mind works. How the NT functions in the world, etc. So I don't want debate. I like the teasing, bantering, but I stay out of the "why it the sky blue?" debates.
All I want out of this is for you NTs to tell me about yourselves. How do you think? What is the difference between NTs, NFs, SJs, SPs? And being an IN I delve into that in a deep way. That's why the post about NT mindset and NF mindset. This gets deep in the realm of trying to understand the way of thinking.
And I can learn a lot just by reading your posts, and interacting with you. I don't think we really even ask the same questions.

It was an offering from a member of the Jung Forum, a guy who I respected very much for his insights into mythology and archetypes in relation to human behavior, on the subject of motive.
I was using a photograph of Joseph Darby, to honor his courage to criticize the abuses at Abu Ghraib and exercise his will to power and journey of individuation, as my avatar for a while. Before that I was using an illustration of Berlioz's Bear and an altered picture of Clinton armed and in military uniform.
If I put up a photo of Einstein, it would be for his efforts to warn our country of Germany's work to construct an atom bomb for use in the war...though he sure was smart (LOL)...

I would like the current one to be a little bigger to really accentuate some of the facial expressions. The file size is pretty small.
Download Irfanview, or use whichever picture-editor you already have or prefer. Load the image, select the resizing tool and alter it to the maximum allowed ( Here, 'The maximum size of your custom image is 120 by 120 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller)' ).
Save --- unless you wish to experiment with the other tools to enhance the image --- under another name, and use.
If the size is too much, try saving in different formats.

The 120 * 120 limit doesn't bother me at all, but the filesize limit does...
after some thought, I think I know why their avatars are so large. when the forum was upgraded to vbulletin, remotely hosted images for phpbb were imported without any problems while all other images weren't imported at all. so, that is how they were able to bypass the restriction.
filesize limits tend not to be set too high to be fair to 56k users... at least.. that's one of the reasons... I guess..

Fun thread.
I chose mine for two reasons. One, it’s the only regularly scheduled program on TV that I will watch, because it not only makes me laugh but it also rewards intelligence. The more things you know or understand, the more jokes and references you “get”. Believe it or not they have some very intelligent writers.
Two, this man represents the vast majority of American men, and one that we all aspire to be.
Just go to a website listing “Homer Simpson quotes” and watch your IQ increase as you read the genius that oozes forth from this character. You will also gain insight to the amazing secret inner-workings of men.

How could you have a cooler avatar that the JC one? Impossible. You should sign up on that Christian guitar site and make that your avatar, that would be awesome. I wonder what kind of car your avatar would drive?

I didn't make it, I found it from some porn site...
It wasn't orange and black, but rather yellow and black. And it was a leopard.
My avatar doesn't drive, don't you know cars pollute and oil dependancy causes serious international problems and unnecessary human suffering? Not something He would support.
( And I've been banned from every Christian site in that I've signed in after a few posts for unexplained reasons, so I have very little interest in signing in those anymore. )

Ayatollah is way cooler.
( By the way, my family [ excluding the then unborn me ] happened to be in Iran when the revolution took place in 1979. Needless to say, they weren't too happy with that. I am fascinated by the revolution, I recently finished a book the Shah Reza Shah Pahlavi wrote after fleeing the country. The guy was a nutjob, but the succeeding regime wasn't much better. )

That's illuminting, that your family has lived in more than one country... makes a difference, I think, to a person's "views."
They have lived in a few countries over the years. From memory, Iran ( then Persia ), Vietnam, India. There's probably more. My father alone has lived in a few more that I can't remember. Holland ( for nitpickers, Netherlands ), Brazil ( I think ) and Canada ( briefly ). I was unlucky enough to be born after they had settled down. And I am very bitter about it.

OK, as of this writing that to the left is a modified form of a stolen avatar. Thusly, it's a profile shot of my fursona, (http://images.google.com/images?q=fursona&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search) Ka'avik BearCat. Computer heavy, lupine derived, well connected. Unlike the RL me, which is connected via a 56K line. Half my posts are written offline for this reason.
For understanding furrae, I would recommend reading Jack (http://pholph.com) but my interest in it is waning, as it has drifted away from the angst-fest the first attracted me to it. Well, that and the bunny of death. Bunnies of death are such an intriguing arrangement.
If I could create a reconizable avatar myself, it would be of the wolverine / mage that we meet at the end of "paths of the perambulator" -- b/c I've always felt so much like him...angry at myself for not being better then those around me, since I know I could be. Instead I'm like a frightened alley cat, always trying to look big, and not succeeding very well at all.

In case people didn't know, my avatar is an image of Isis, the most powerful Egyptian goddess of magic, and the giver of life.
Isis personafies everything I most value and revere in my own gender - the capacity to give life, to nurture it, to create balance and harmony in the world. Nothing very scary about that really.
Isis is fascinating. Anyone interested in reading about what she symbolised can go to the following link:

Are you sure this isnt somewhat wishful thinking? Some modern religions are as focussed on the Holy Mother/Virgin Mary etc etc as they are on anything else, yet it doesnt change...
1) which gender tends to cook
2) which gender tends to clean
3) which gender is generally undervalued in a work environment
Now, personally, I think this sucks (seeing as I am about to go and cook dinner and enjoy doing so, for instance), I am just surprised to hear that the ancient egyptian society would be any more woman friendly than today (suggesting that today's society has lost that viewpoint is less woman friendly?)
Edit : I just read http://www.crystalinks.com/egyptianwomen.html
which is quite interesting... but suggests only that egyptian women had some equality with men (which they do today, of course) enshrined in law, but that typically they stayed at home and brought up the kids. Pretty decent stuff all in all for the ancient world (hey they exist in their own right, well done egypt) but I am not sure we have lost something in comparison with the modern world.... In particular read the section on women's occupations.
And quotes like this
"Despite the legal freedom of women to travel about, folk custom or tradition may have discouraged that. So, e.g., earlier in the Old Kingdom, Ptahhotep would write, "If you desire to make a friendship last in a house to which you have access to its master as a brother or friend in any place where you might enter, beware of approaching the women. It does not go well with a place where that is done."
Interesting stuff though.

Do some reading about the wife of Rameses II (I can't off the top of my head remember what her name was). She was very influential and powerful in matters of state and was in fact (according to some sources at least) the pharoah's "principal advisor".
There are other examples which I'll discuss in other posts.

I accept that this is to the extent anything is certain after so many years that Egypt had powerful women. Every society regrettably will turn up the occasional Margaret Thatcher
But I guess I am looking for more than "some elite women were powerful" before accepting that women were treated in a way that has been lost in modern society to its detriment.
I would be interested to learn more about :
They also had a much more holistic and complete vision of women, and their place in the world and in society, than people do today.
I think it's quite sad that this has been lost.

This is Quincy, one of two INTP characters that I've ever had, aside from brief cameo appearences from myself in the place of Nameless Townswoman Who Yells "Oh my friggin' Vivec! We're all gonna die!" And Then Does.
Quincy is a realitively minor character in my PSO fan fiction, and also involved in the only couple I've ever writen for that didn't get screwed over multiple millions of times. (Yes, his wife getting possessed by the Profound Darkness and then having to spend about a year getting it out of her mind all the way is pretty gentle for me, as is having his entire life's work destroyed by the government because of Really Moronic Policy Makers.)
Quincy is a Newman scientist who specializes in androids, and is one of the top in his field. He's kind, a bit withdrawn, I should probably write for him some more, since he's not very developed beyond his relationship with Magie, who is a more major character. He's a pretty awesome guy, only he doesn't go on grand adventures, and he doesn't fight monsters or discover dark secrets hidden for thousands of years that should've been left alone. I'll probably write a story with just him in it some time or another, since I like him quite a bit.
I mostly chose him because I like this particular doll turned out. One night I sat down and randomly dolled all of my PSO characters on that same base. And this was the best one of them.
And Crazy, I see a dolphin in your avatar. And a wizard, summoning that dolphin. The Black Dolphin of Doom and the end of the world.

The pic is by a Japanese artist named Yoshitomo Nara. He draws a lot of evil looking children. I first saw his work at the MoMA, and found it rather brilliant, and brilliant that these cartoons, basically, had made it into the realm of officially institution-sanctified "Art."

I'm partial to the feral kid from Road Warrior, obviously. It was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. Plus, that's all I think of when I see "feral kid" under mgbradsh.
Alas, mgbradsh is too complex a character to be defined merely by one static avatar.

That's funny for two reasons.
The woman on the motorcycle was from Sex and Lucia. (which is why the search my not have been completely fruitless)
It was great, it starred the girl from Spanglish, Paz Vega, in a much different role. The story in the movie was absolutely fantastic.

I saw it today. Didn't come out that long ago. And who has colors like that in a movie?
Think Ms. Universe.
And yeah, it's hard to pick a screen shot for someone else, I don't know how you remember the movie.

Maude Lebowski: In a sense, yes. My art has been commended as being strongly vaginal which bothers some men. The word itself makes some men uncomfortable. Vagina.
Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski: Oh yeah?
