It's not a good idea to spew profanities while wearing handcuffs.

When in the presence of authority exercising it, my ENTP friend is consistently able to outmaneuver and dominate them. He is a brilliant and dirty political strategist, lol. It is an entertaining sight, and pleasant to see him bring them justice :).

I'm actually pretty sure this is not a unique personality defect on my part, but an INTP thing in general . . . what lulls the masses lulls the masses. Sometimes being INTP sucks.

If there is a valid reason for authority and that entity does its job effectively then I do not have much of an issue. However an authority that has overstepped its bounds or fails in its intended task is an enemy of mine, period.

It is a constant joke at my work that I have no respect for authority at all. They joke that I am some day going to go to my bosses-bosses-boss and tell him if he doesn't do something for me right away that I am going to escalate it to the CEO.

IT has actually worked out well for me though, because I'm really good at my job. I think my boss is a little bit afraid of me, because if he tries to assert his authority with me, I will argue, and I always win our arguments.

Argue his authority? > "I'm your boss" "You can't tell me what to do!" "Alright, you win".

Well, luckily, my boss is actually rational. So he tries to give reasons for doing what he wants, however in general I know more about everything than he does.

yes, and unfortunately it often is as so frequently it exists only to serve its holders.

This is why the power of authority should only come to those who do not crave for it.

But who at least know what to do with it.

I seem to have a problem with it.

It's funny because saying that is the same as saying "I've got a problem with power" or "I've got a problem with influence" and that just sounds odd in a way.

I despise unjustified authority, but I think everyone already knew that ;)

Real question is: who just hates people having authority over them and who hates authority in principle? Personally I don't like having authority over things even if I deserve it. I like people to be equal and for people to follow my ideas because they are right, not because they are supposed to listen to me.

But are you good at leading people? Personally, I'm terrible at it. I much prefer being an advisor than a leader because I can carry out my ideas through others and let them deal with the people issues.

Real question is: who just hates people having authority over them and who hates authority in principle?

I see the two as being intertwined. People, given a position or stature of authority, tend to become cocky bastards. Give a person a special suit/uniform, a title and/or a badge (a gun, a taser stick, etc), and all of the sudden that person does things not because they should (right vs. wrong in principle or from a sense of ethics) but just because they can. Time and time again, it has been proven that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Law enforcement persons are the prime example of corruption.

I refer to "absolute" only in the sense that a normal person can be placed under arrest AKA taken hostage and subjected to all kinds of mental/physical/other torture for no logical reason. Society has placed this "absolute" sense of power in the hands of people who have proven time and again that they abuse it with a sick kind of sadism. A person can be doing absolutely nothing other than being who he or she is, typing away on a laptop, for example, and become suspect. Suspicion is enough to get a person arrested these days. And if there's not an actual law that can be found as a "reason" for arrest, they'll invent one. . . even something insanely stupid invented to "justify" their actions.

Seriously. Whatever happened to civil liberties?

Have you ever been the authority before? The boss, or the manager? That adds some insight into the situation.

I've seen an INTP as a supervisor before, and they seemed oblivious to the many attempts (and successes) of others to make them look like shit. The INTP managers were usually respected, but not really good at staying managers. It was only a matter of time before they were made to look like idiots.

Sometimes I think not having respect for authority and not following the rules is a negative. Like, most people smile to the leader's face, but then conspire behind the leader's back, waiting to "get one over" on the leader.. and I sometimes wonder if this is the better approach. Going up and just outright revolting or showing no respect for the leader tends to land me in deep shit, and for what? Losing my job? Being antagonized and stressed out by the manager?

Maybe others are smarter in this regard.

I cringe, but get revenge with the good ol' fashioned passive-aggressive complex.

Authority is not evil. People who abuse it are. It just so happens that there are so many people that abuse it that the distinction between the two can blur, if you ask me.

So, in the spirit of the OP:

I have a problem with the people who abuse authority, which happens to be most of them who have it.

edit: I also have a problem with people who have authority who do not deserve it; so, to the extents that they do not deserve it and/or abuse it, I have a problem -- which typically leads to them having a problem, as well

Trust and distrust of law enforcement runs in cycles. We're in a fascist phase right now, but I figure another tipping point will come and society will decide to put some checks on authority again.

They can start by dressing cops like cops and not like soldiers.

I will respect authority until it has proven it deserves none of my respect. I don't flout the rules just for the sake of being rebellious, but if I can't see the logic behind a certain rule, and it works in my favour to break it, I will probably break it.

I think that law enforcement is necessary, simply because there are so many people out there that need it. But if the law started telling me that I had to stand on my head at 3:34pm every Tuesday for 10 minutes, I'd break that law. It's just a matter of how logical the rules are, and why they've been put there.

If people decide to abuse their power, or let the power get to their heads, they deserve to be overthrown in my opinion. Otherwise, if it isn't hurting me, let them do their thing.

Um, no. Authority is a different creature from Power and Influence. Someone can have a lot of authority and very little power or influence and likewise very little authority, but lots of power and influence.

Authority makes me do things that I wouldn't naturally do just so I am not under the control of the authority.

They were made to look like idiots and others "bought it" even though they were "good" supervisors? Or were they not actually very good supervisors?
