It varies from 14-18 (usu. 16) and usu. has an age difference clause, where the 'offender' must be three or four years older than the 'victim'. I looked it up when thinkin' bout asking a 17 y.o. out. not long ago. Waited 'til she was 18 anyway, and she gave me the runaround after all!

I tried to date a girl who was 17 when I was 21. She was a college freshwoman and I was a senior. I didn't know that she was only 17 until the second date. The statutory rape age in NY is 18, unfortunately. Parents have to apply a double standard all the time, to the extent that most parents want a better life for their kids than they had themselves, and they do *not* want their kids making the same stupid mistakes.

My mother quit smoking when I was young. Perhaps it was precisely to avoid setting a bad example for my brother and me. I guess it worked; I never had the desire to smoke, and I seldom recall that she ever smoked.

That said, good luck in keeping your kids from making the same mistakes you did. I have no idea how you go about it, but then I don't have kids so I don't have to worry about it. Here's a guess, though...

Perhaps it's best to admit your indiscretions to your kids, if they are determined not to be like you. Then they won't do it because you did.

Kids are tricky. Some parents have success by completely sheltering their kids from the world, with the whole smoking, drinking, drugs will kill you and send you straight to hell thing. Others have success with the “tell it like it is, yeah I did it” story.

I think the most important thing is just taking the time to discuss it frequently, and what your expectations are. They’re going to make up their minds for themselves one way or the other, but if they know exactly where you stand on it, regardless of if you’re telling the truth or lies, that is the biggest influence you can have.

Sounds like a commercial but I think it’s really the best way. If they know they’re going to get big-time busted for it, and that you’re paying attention, doesn’t matter whether you lie about the realities or not.
