View Full Version : idea: taking polls to the next level

This might not be so much a suggestion, so much as something that would be really cool, but probably not super plausable:

Polls are nice, but really you can only get so much done with them, and as an INTP I think taking them to the next level would be very interesting in some ways.

For instance say I wanted to know if there is a correlation between males and belief in god vs. females belief in god and what is the god you believe in if you do and if you dont why? Yes you could now put about 20 different options in our method of polling now, but after so many options, the message gets lost, and it ends up being a spread out statistic about something rediculous.

On the other hand if the same problem was being approached, but in the same poll you had the option of asking more then once, then it could be like a "staged polling" First q: are you male or female? 2nd q: do you belive in god? 3rd question: (now this would be customised depending how you answered the 2nd)...etc etc. see where im goin with this?

In the end, not only would you get the answer the answer to your question much more simply, but you also have many other stats that could be found out and displayed as a bi product, like in this case, what is the male to female ratio answering this survay?

Then of course you can make it even more crazy too where age, hair colour, viginity etc etc etc all can play as separate and distinct variables. In the end, depending on how this polling thing would be set up, there could be a LOT of information that could be drawn from the question

Now to get even more intense: these polls could have associated with them REAL statisitics; standard deviation, number of samples, probabilities inferred from the gathered stats etc etc. Of course this would be something that is hidden and can be seen at will, so that people who dont care or dont know what that is all about dont have to look at it.

I think its very plausible in a way, given that it would make some polls much more scientifically valuble. Also, I gather that there are a lot of computer programming buffs in here, and although I'm not a buff, I have taken the courses and can see that this would not be the hardest thing to make. Plus, this is cool shit:P

Draw downs: much more complicated.

Draw ups: since when do INTPs not like complexity?:|

sounds pretty cool, lets get them to enact that after they do the YYYY-MM-DD thing

Thinking about this today, I thought of something even more cumutavly rediculous:

Basically I think what my brain was trying to get at, and has gotten to today is that it would be cool if we didnt have multiiple polls so much as one giant interconnected poll.

This way, every once in a while you can go to the poll section, and check out new sub polls are up today. This would be extremely interconnected and cool of a thing cause new polls would birth themselves between polls. That is if I answer do you like red or blue better, it is automatically connected to are you a male or a female poll and the do you believe in God poll, so automatically you could bring up a possible correlation to favorite colours and belief in god, even though no one specifically was loooking for that info... and obviously much more useful questions would get answered too.

This concept at this point is no longer a suggestion so much as a fantasy for now, because this concept sound like an intese programming project.

INTERCONNECTED POLLS! maybe one day far away.....

Cautiously interested; a masterly concept. Of course another drawback would be that the viewer could eventually construct a complete profile of any participating player. If this profile matches those of wanted persons, would we have a moral duty to inform Interpol ?

I love the idea, however we are such a small pool and the range of ansewers would be HUGE, we will have 1 or 2 people in like 14 places, and the rest empty (not unlike the "bad group sex" section the a current poll

it sounds like an interesting undertaking. when I read the initial post, I thought that's what you meant .. the 'interconnected polls' .. if someone is interested in doing it, I wouldn't mind talking to them about the tables needed the rest is just code and effecient queries.

well, any accuracy or lack there of would be the same as any non-connected poll we have now, which i agree is not all that great with our population. however, by the time this would actually possibly be in effect, our population would be much bigger:P

You mean like a wanted persons as in criminals?:S

Well, not every poll would be trackable to a user, just like now. But ya, there would be a bunch of spin offs including this one, its gathering complexity the more i think of it.

Just curious, what is the growth rate around here, factoring in that Zedo scares off a percentage of folks each day as well.

this a general overview.. it is actually broken for the moment until I get around to fixing it but it does display the information I believe you're curious about[be sure to scroll to the bottom]..

Zedo's been pretty tame lately, judging by the stats and your reckoning people actually join more when he is on fire.

wow very interesting, quite the surge there in Jan, yet Feb show about an equal number of posting with little more than half the people. I guess this could be fluke, but it would be interesting to find a long term pattern.

No doubt, he is awesome, I just picked on him A) cause it was easy ,and B
) cause I am sure he couldn't care less.

No,if everyone was the iconic reserved detached INTP this forum would be much less fun. The only person here who I really found disruptive was "Edwin" something, and that one was banned long ago. Otherwise everyone rocks.
