Hm, how about it?

Enable User Reputation System (http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/vboptions_reputation)

I'm vaguely aware of the cons (groupthink) but it seems like it might be fun to try, at least as an experiment.

Bleh. Looks like too much work. What if perceptions change over time?

In my experience, user ratings are pretty worthless.

I'm kind of undecided... Although I'm leaning towards not implementing the feature..

They work for ebay. Not that I would buy anything that anyone here would be selling.

Plus it saves us the time of having the inevitable "People you hate" thread.

I should have added, "on message boards."

I don't like them. It seems more plausible that we should be judged by the content of our posts and not by the length of our rep-penis (which is no more than a "ultimatley meaningless" allusion, as individual perspectives are bound to differ).

And I've noticed a lot of circle-repping(/jerking) with boards it is implemented in (encourages cliques?), so I'm not fond of it.

Do you mean that all the "bad" people "hang out" together and all the "good" people will get each other's backs? Doesn't that already happen already?

Might as well make it easy for the new people....

That's a point. But shouldn't we allow someone to make up their own mind about who is "bad" and who is "good", by themselves? Do we really need to emphasise it? I just find the idea meaningless and open to abuse.

EDIT: Include "unnecessary" to that list.

This could turn into an excellent debate on the dynamics of this site.

First, I don't think things will rampage out of control as far as the ratings are concerned. Could they be punative, maybe but unlikely, people here are fairly reserved.

Secondly, heeroyuy is already building in a buddy system. Which will go a long ways towards creating a strong cliquish society here.

Why not emphasize it? When I first came here I got plastered by booyalab. Not one to slink away with my tail between my legs I looked around and found she does that to everyone. Had there been a ratings system, I may have been able to tell that immediately and just gotten on with things. Another person may not have come back.

I just am not willing to write off the idea so quickly.

Where's that smriking smiley when you need it?

I can see this is like opposing sides of the coin here. Well, we'll see.

It probably will never happen if it makes you feel better.

I am against this rating thing, but that's only because I'd get negative rating.

Didn't we have enough cliques at school? I know I had, and that was not much fun. I don't want to see anything like that here...

Hell, this is among the few places, virtual or real, where I've ever had a sense of "belonging". These ideas seem quite invidious to me. The egostroking thread was nearly too much.*

(* I say it only because I was mentioned so few times... )

Well.

I surely have no interest in it for my own benefit, since I'm a keeper of unpopular points of view and a member of several nonvocal minorities--I've even put my anti-flaming mantra in my sig to try to keep myself in check. ;)

It is more of the mad scientist in me that wants to see this unleashed and then analyze its effects. I find online communication and group dynamics fascinating and would be interested in seeing how and if this changes people's posting styles.

Totally selfish, geeky INTPish thing to want to do. Bugs under glass, all of you!

I don't think you'd get a negative rating, unless the poo avatar is weighted heavily.

And you are the "dark horse" on the site. Maybe even one of the 4 horses of the apocolypse I can't say for sure, no one ever mentions them.

I'd vote for you! One of the reasons I thought this would be neat is that the exceptionally witty and acerbic posters aren't adequately rewarded. If you only knew how many times I wanted to just post a !

I think reputation could work as an anonymous, non-spamming 'me too' button.

Hmmm, I actually thought "ugh, why" at first, but the above is quite compelling enough to change my mind.

I haven't been on many message boards, but I've never seen one where the members actually "know" each other as well as people here seem to. I've never seen people actually respond to posts in an "introductions" forum... Where people apparently engage in forming alliances and animosities. I know my posting attitude definitely changed when I realized that people were remembering who posted what. Terribly curious, what a rating system here would do.

Would people post more? Or less? Would they play nicer? Become less divided? More divided? Would it get more political or less political?... really not so far off from that "my favorite members" thread, is it?
