I don't like techno or most kinds of electronic music. In addition to not caring for electronic sounds, most of the techno I've heard has been incredibly boring and repetitive for my tastes.

Yes. I think I placed somewhere my recommendation of the soundtrack of the Sega Saturn version of Wipeout. Supposedly INTP's enjoy atmosphere in music, and ths soundtrack has beautiful atmosphere.

If you don't like techno, my guess is you ether just don't like it, or you are thinking of the annoyingly repetitive type and have not heard good techno (like Wipeout.)

I like a heavy dose of techno in my industrial music, but I don't like those repetitive candy raver tunes.

Melody

Actually, now that I think of it, most techno sucks. But, so does most of everything. Vagabond said somewhere that she does not go by artist, but by song. I am similar, but I go a bit further and also do not go by genre. This way I get the best of everythng.

I had a friend who otherwise had very similar taste as me who said the same thing. He tried and tried to send me "good techno" (I can't remember artist names), but I didn't care much for any of it. There may be some techno out there somewhere that I like, but so far I've never heard it.

Repetitiveness is only a trait in a lot of techno I don't like though. I also don't like most music with a lot of electronic sounds, for example stuff like Skinny Puppy.

First of all, techno != electronic music. Techno is a specific subgenre of electronic music.

But yeah, to answer the question, I love both electronic music in general and techno specifically. I listen to it obsessively and also do a bit of bedroom DJing just for fun B)

most of the techno I've heard has been incredibly boring and repetitive for my tastes.

I don't go to raves but they play techno at a lot of underground art shows I go to. It's like a Pavlovian bell, as soon as I hear some I start to look for the waif blonde in $180 jeans because she's probably standing by a plastic tub filled with melting ice and bottled beer.

I often think, 'I hope no one actually wasted his time sitting around mixing this tape because one song on a loop would've done the same thing.'
Half the time I'm hoping they'll actually segue into the actual song their sampling so I can get a break from the monotony of repeated phrases. "You lousy tease, quit doing this to me!"

But after a couple of swigs of Heineken, if I'm able to talk decomposition with one of the artists, then a little techno in the b.g. isn't so bad.

I have my nitpicks about techno too, but I have to admit despite all my bitching, I love it.

Reminds me of the show Fraiser, where Niles and Frasier go out after dinner and realize the one thing that's better than a perfect meal is a near perfect meal with one small glitch that they can bitch about afterwards. =) That's sooo me.

Only News Techno... just kidding. I can't think of any techno I like off of the top of my head. Some electronica is alright.

I've tried. I really have. I can't. I really can't. I'd rather try to get a refund from the airlines or pull my own teeth. If techno is on a game soundtrack I'll put on my own CDs (not that I play many games anyways).

I don't know why..it just heards my head. I lived with a raver once and it was a miserable experience, so maybe it pulls up subconcious-bad-stuff. But I didn't like it before that either...

I do like industrial and the use of synths in heavier rock (well, any pop and rock, for that matter)...especially hardcore. That's kind of a direction I'd like to go myself.

Give me a live drummer anyday...I think that's what it might boil down to.

And I agree that techno is not electronic, but the terms are often interchangable.

So has the use of computers in the audio engineering industry. I can now make the world's shittiest drummer have good timing (although he still sounds like a jackass).

So I think you want to thank computers for the perfection of an imperfect craft?

Not that I'm a purist or anything, but maybe that's why I can't get into full blown electronic music. I like mistakes - they're human. It makes the music seem more real when they're there. Heh...I've been complimented on my mistakes. :)

I'll only listen to techno under duress (or somebody threatens to turn on RnB/Hip Hop... same diff)

The good techno that people talk about i don't mind really... I just prefer metal. The bad techno might as well be hip hop teeny bopper crap

Well, not exactly. I'm really thanking computers for raising expectations on our own mastery over the basic building blocks of music, rather than trying to replace us. :D

I may be over-sensitive to the slightest nuances, but do I detect a vague animus against drummers, both here and earlier ?

Y'know, it's not true what they claim about drummers being the stupidest ones --- not that I'd know, I never played any instrument except some ghastly thing called a recorder that they force all children in British schools to play: presumably to warn teachers what hell is going to be like.

I have only humourous intentions in my joking. As a bassist, I'm pretty focused on drummers and their nuances - it's part of the gig.

I have a drum set and have played drums in bands as well - although that doesn't necessarily qualify my remarks. It's just that their the easiest to pick on. :)

In the album recording process, drums are the most common (ime) to edit (next to vocals). It's just the nature of the process...it's easier to overdub just about any other instrument than a drumset, so editing is quite common and intensive there.

Anyways, your Ne is functioning just fine, as I am an a%$hole bassist that plays drums, that has a hard time dealing with drummers (except the current one). Sue me. :)

Consider progressive house -- the beat is different while the overlap to "techno" is large, but it's not "techno." So, yes, I like techno; or rather, some techno.

Huh? Prog has pretty much nothing in common with techno.

If I am listening to the music to enjoy it alone, then I do not like techno. However, if I am enjoying something else at the time, like dancing/clubbing (haven't been in too long, actually), or studying, or doing other reading, then techno in the background is ok.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I guess there is some overlap with tech-house lately, with a lot of prog DJs throwing in some more diverse influences, and that could definitely be construed as a techno influence.

"Pop pop....Pop pop pop....TECHNO."--Music Non-Stop

Ahem. KRAFTWERK. The one and only original. Seriously xNTP music. For beginners, I recommend two albums. 1. The Mix from 1991. It's a set of remixes for the most part. 2. Radio-Activity from 1976. Much more unusual and sparse than 1., but it's so good I feel like crying. The last song on the album, Ohm Sweet Ohm, is transcendental.

I've recently found a site which lists all the electronic music genres, and I've found I'm attracted to genres that have the word 'Acid' in the front. I'm very much still a beginner, but I'm slowly learning more and developing a taste for what I like and don't like about the music. I used to dislike all of it, and now I only dislike the bad stuff.

Here's a really helpful site for people, like myself, who don't know Hard Acid from Buttrock GOA:

I love most electronic music, the exact sub-genre of "techno" isn't my fav, but for purposes of this poll I voted "yes". I much prefer deep house, while I can pass totally on break beats (yuck!).

Some classics in my opinion, Inner City's "Big Fun" 12inch mix. Boston Bruin's "Raise Your Hands" and while he disappoints me now, Moby's old school "Move" disco threat remix is awesome. I think I'll stop now since I am no doubt showing my age here.

I have heard a few royksopp tracks, didn't they do that video about poor leno or something like that? I liked what I’ve heard of them but don't have an album, iv’e only heard their singles

Geogaddi is an amazing album but I prefer music has the right to children as I find it a bit more of a soothing ride, Geogaddi definitely has more of an eastern style tinge to it though so i rate them as amazing albums in there own right.

Have you heard any of the album, which was released over the net of BOC’S older material? About 25 or 30 unreleased tracks which were released I think on soulseek, I didn't have a clue about the album until a friend gave me a copy, it a pretty mixed bag as it contains lots of skit tracks like television show rips but also has a few really stunning tracks. The album wasn't released by the group officially though.

geogaddi vs. music has the right to children... i agree, they are both very good in their own ways, but music has the right to children is more their signature style. i didn't like geogaddi at first but now i love it.

i had no clue about this elusive album! it sounds incredible. i wish i could figure out soulseek. i tried to get dangermouse's 'grey album' and was not successful, at all.

it's definitely not techno. i guess i would lump royksopp along with IDM, which is yet another subgenre.

i used to be the "RPM Director" at my university's radio station, and I dealt with everything from royksopp to green velvet. RPM (revolutions per minute) is basically what the music industry calls electronic music these days.

I usually just lump IDM in with techno, most of what I listen to in electronica is labelled IDM , But I don't like the IDM title, I think something like ambient electronica or Foward thinking electronica to be a better title. But then there are sub genres in IDM like noise, glitch-core etc etc.

This dance music, ain't half complicated is it?

I like some Techno. The repetitive nature of it is part of its appeal, actually. But I would agree with the person who said that it's best in an environment where you are dancing or doing some other active movement, even driving. I like Downtempo Trip Hop much more, when it comes to modern electronic. DJ Krush has some good numbers. I like seeing some of the "new school" stuff integrated with older styles. Ronnie Jordan plays jazz guitar, but he will add a little Hip Hop for spice. I enjoy what has been called Motorik. Neu put out some good jams there. Krautrock is fun, too, in measured doses. Amon Duul II, Klaus Schultze. Brian Eno's first albums were great. K

People who don't like techno probably never gave it a chance. Techno is good, but you have to go into it with your mind. Shut down your brain, freeze your thinking, and take on a dream-like state of mind. That's when techno really shines. It's such relaxed, quiet music.

Mind, I'm not talking about the stuff with 3 million bmp, or the kind of house that has angry germans cursing the heavens in it. That's just subversive crap.

IDM is actually "intelligent dance music" and not a term used for general electronic music.

You may have misinterpreted her. IDM was just one of the genres of electronic music that she happens to like. She didn't suggest that those other genres (D&B, trance, house, gabber) were part of IDM.

A lot of it is repetitious crap, but there is some really great stuff out there too. I don't necessarily like music you'd dance to, as I don't dance...but I find the beats along with the layers of other sounds fascinating. For instance, there's this song by Infected Mushroom called Stretched that I can listen to for hours on repeat. The first minute is kind of crap, but the rest is excellent because it's like variations on a theme. At one part, it's a woman almost wailing, then it jumps to piano, then what sounds like screaming electric guitars...all doing the same theme...it's mind-blowing, to me at least. I think of electronic music as sort of a modern classical genre...there's something about the way it's structured that really gets to me in the same way that a great symphony does.

Definatly a good group. My favorite techno song is called symphonatic by Infected Mushroom.

I'm a techno fan. But I find that while listening to the music, I tend to zone out and just think about things. I think most american type techno songs are repetition, whereas foreign groups are mixed.

Something like this (http://forums.intpcentral.com/showpost.php?p=33589&postcount=36) in particular is something I've been looking for, for a long time. I've always had problems defining what genre my music is in. With this reference I think it'll be a lot easier. Thanks, Ape.

As for the topic itself, yeah I like Techno music. Yes, I love electronic music. And much like what lexiphanic said above, I enjoy the whole genre so much it has become the main focus of my music composing. Part of the reason is probably that I grew up as part of the Swedish Amiga demo making scene, where Eurodisco, Techno and eventually Trance (and miscellaneous related styles) were prominent features.

I believe that to truly understand a genre, you first have to listen to it enough that your subconscious accepts its general principles into your reference frame. Once you get there, you will probably enjoy most of its music.

It can be good or bad, like any music. It's like saying, 'do you like rock and roll?' That would depend.

Word.

I voted "yes," but my love of "techno" is limited to stuff like Basic Channel, the minimal Detroit sound, modern revivalists like Andy Stott, and the deep ambient Monolake-flavor stuff.

Yup, love it... started out listening to trip-hop/acid jazz, then drum&bass, then house, then progressive trance...one thing led to another and the next thing I know, I'm an electronica junkie.
