Well at the risk of over-posting, and creating frivolous threads for no good reason, I'm going to set this one up.

What songs are buzzing around in our brains today, and why? I often find myself obsessed with a song for a whole morning, and just can't get it out of my head. It's not always 'cos I've even heard it on the radio or anything - it just pops into my head for no apparent reason and stays there.

Today's song for me is "You've got a friend" (James Taylor).

That song is often associated with melancholy for me, but strangely, I'm happy today.

I can't work it out.

"The more we get together, the happier we'll be."

We sang that damn Marxist song all the time in Kindergarten and I can never get it out of my mind.

Alright! Who has 'rockin' the casbah' in their sig.?

Two days ago I read a post of theirs. Consequently, that blasted song is still stuck in my head! :banghead:

I've even been walking differently due to the incessently infectious bassline.

I was talking to Utopmik on Yahoo the other day and started thinking about Alabama and then that damned awful song came into my head:

"Oh Susanna, oh don't you cry for me, I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee"

Couldn't get the damn drivel out of my head..lol

I've been listening to stuff to keep me awake in arch class... and it's been stuck.

Things aren't necessarily better when wet.
Definitely not if it's an architecture project.

Feuerräder, by Rammstein.

It's sort of haunting...the chorus. I like it. I'm not sure why it's on my mind, it just happens to keep playing there.

"Her Majesty", by the Beatles. Because my spouse sang it and it's so damn catchy.

Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl but she doesn't have a lot to say.
Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl but she changes from day to day.
I wanna tell her that I love her a lot, but I gotta get a belly full of wine.
Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl, someday I'm gonna make her mine,
Oh yeah,
Someday I'm gonna make her mine.

Today's song for me is "You've got a friend" (James Taylor).

I just had that song playing while I was reading your post...interesting. Coincidence?

This morning I had No Doubt's "Platinum Blonde Life" stuck in my head. Why? I don't know.

Two weeks ago Semper Fidelis (the Marine Corps song, I think) was playing in my dreams and when I woke up (for several consecutive days).

Ah. Marching band. Nice.

I'm playing star wars II, the sith lords right now, and there are many dialogue options about the Force that describe it as 'a sound, at the edge of hearing'. That's what these damn songs are. sometimes I don't even know I'm singing them inside my head until I think about it.

Beautiful song. May be my favorite Massive Attack song and one of my favorite trip hop songs....

Do you like Portishead?

Anyway, the song on my mind today was the Coldplay song ("We Live in a Beautiful World...") from the beginning of Garden State. Great movie. Great song. By the way, I believe it is mgbradsh (Zach Braff) who I currently have a crush on. Can I just say that I really liked him in that movie? Like I wanted to marry him? Okay, I'm getting out of hand now. (deep sigh). It's just that he played that part so well. The scene with him and his father near the end of the movie keeps coming to mind today too...

Sorry for the tangent. My mind's been doing loopdy-loops all day today.

I dont mind that song actually.

Today I am mostly humming zoolookology by Jean Michel Jarre, but mainly because I am listening to his Aero release in my car! That song is weird, everytime I hear it takes me back to this moment in the early 90, on a sunday, sitting in my first car, going to work, stopped at a traffic light ,in the rain..............and I ahve no idea why?! Somehow that moment got burnt into my head and is tied to that song.

Otherwise for the instant I am hung up on "Y control" -the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I used to have his "Equinox" on vinyl years back and my brother had a double album of his which I can't remember the name of. JMJ was very "in" in the '80's when we were young G (remember). The beginnings of techno, I suppose..

Today that song would be "Sucks to be You" by Prozzak . . . that song is a little too jazzy for its own good. Also, it has a very nice guitar solo in the middle.

A more recent "stuck in head" song was better. . "Prophecy" by Remy Zero:

Consider this a sign
This is a train in the night
And now it's time for you to go
You know you had a healthy life boy.
You walk this world like you're a ghost.
Your hands are coming though the needles --
Sick of your tragic and the evils
I am the keeper of the songs of everyone.
Look into the sun and see
Your soul is dying
Used to feel the faith
But now you're tired of trying
Should have left alone
What you have stolen from everyone
How are you feeling?
Seem a little sick to me now

(Listen to this song, it's great)

The original CSI? As if it didn't rock already; the writing is quite good.
While the cases are usually interesting, the characters are the best part; especially Grissom.

The last coupla days I've been on a huge placebo kick. I've always been pulled towards dischordant music - really just to anything that isn't radio friendly. Music is something that is selfishly personal (or should be), and it shouldn't be easily accessible. You must work to like a song. Also check out Poe's 'Hey Pretty' (the remix is even better) and 'Lover I Dont Have To Love' by Bright Eyes.

An example of a fond memory tied to bad music:

Several years ago my young daughter and I were on a road trip and heard this one song over and again on several different radio stations. It is a horrible, repetitive piece of (? dance/club) "music" but it served to entertain us because we misheard one of the words in the one line that was repeated ad nauseum -we'd laugh as we sang along to it. When this song surfaces in my mind that one line just darts in for a moment or two throughout the day - like a friggin' mosquito in my ear. The title escapes me - the line is "Pizza going round my miiiiiiiiiiiiiind" (Pizza is supposed to be Beats are .... ). Has been with me since the drive home from work yesterday.

songs and memories are funny things, I was never big fan, but I link Pearl Jams "Black" and girl I know, and wish I had, flipping thru the channels today just bit ago, I hit that song as he sings:

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

All the sudden all the hair on my arms stood on end, as goose bumps covered me, my mood plunged and I quickly turned the channel.

A new study got people to listen to familiar music such as the Rollig Stones' "Satisfaction" and the theme from "Pink Panther" and then scanned the people's brains using MRI, which detects activity in different areas.

The researchers then interrupted the tunes with a couple of seconds of silence. They found that people couldn't stop the well-known songs continuing in their heads during the quiet gaps, and the brain activity recorded this (as if the song had continued to be played). The researchers concluded that the brain was perceptually hearing the song even at times when the ear wasn't.

They also concluded that this study provides the "neural basis" for the spontaneous and sometimes vexing experience of "hearing a familiar melody in one's head" -

Not long ago, there was a story on public radio about earworms, or songs which get in ones head. I couldn't find a link to the radio program, but I found a good concise article:

http://www.wordspy.com/words/earworm.asp

I think the radio program talked about the study that songbird34 mentions.

Anyway, the first earworm that popped into my head today was "Duke of Earl" by Gene Chandler, 1962.

But as I read through this thread, "Daydream Believer" temporarily drove out "Duke of Earl", followed by a variety of Tom Lehrer songs (he is great!).

Now, as I write this, the theme songs to "Gilligan's Island" and "The Dukes of Hazzard" are alternating in my head and driving me crazier. I need to drive them out before I start pulling on my tongue and braying like a donkey!

I find it interesting that, although I have 5000+ records and 2000+ CDs, very few of the songs people mention here are familiar to me. My interest in Western pop/rock declines after c. 1969, so that music isn't well-represented in my collection. However, I do have numerous recent recordings of pop music from different countries all over the world. Sometimes these get in my head too.

Oh no! As I wrote the last sentence, "Nobre Vagabundo" by Daniela Mercury just popped into my head, driving out the TV themes. At least they are gone (for now).

This sort of parade of earworms is the story of my life. It is a wonder that I hold onto a minimum of sanity.

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars

This is on my mind, because I just googled for it to see if any of my posts came up, since I reference this song a lot. And nope, nothing of mine. Whew! My favrorite song, of course. Very INFP, 4x3.

Absolutely mesmerizing.

At the opposite end of the musical spectrum is Otep. Thots is my favorite. But their collaboration with Slipknot to produce Waterside is definately good too.

Here's the lyrics. Oh, I mean the AWESOME lyrics:

* * *

Pearls of swine bereft of me
Long and weary my road has been
I was lost in the cities
Alone in the hills
No sorrow or pity for the leaving I feel

(chorus)
I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky

Friends and liars don't wait for me
I'll get on all by myself
I put millions of miles
Under my heels
And still too close to you
I feel

(chorus)
I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightening
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night

* * *

"Do you realize
That you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realize
We're floating in space?
Do you realize
That happiness makes you cry?

Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your good-byes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize?

Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your good-byes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Another Night In

Greed’s all gone now, there’s no question
And I can see you push your hair behind your ear
Regain your balance
Doesn’t matter where she is tonight
Or with whoever she spends her time
If these arms were meant to hold her
They were never meant to hold her so tight
For the love of that girl.
Greed’s all gone now, panic subsides
When I could run, pulling arms to love her
Try to put myself on the inside
Of the love of that girl
Tears swell, you don’t know why
For the love of that girl
They never fall, they can never run dry
They never fall, they can never run dry
For the love of that girl
For the love of that girl

Promise is never over, never questions that needed reply
But she could breathe deep into my neck
Let me know I’m just on the outside
Of the love of that girl
Tears swell, you don’t know why
For the love of that girl
They never fall, they can never run dry
For the love of that girl
Greed’s all gone now, there’s no question
And I can see you push your hair behind your ears
Regain your balance
Doesn’t matter where she is tonight
Or with whoever she spends her time
If these arms were meant to hold her
They were never meant to hold her so tight

Well, actually, thinking back to a couple years ago... I think it's because I discovered the song while I was very into Botticelli. His John the Baptist in particular. The lyrics fit; the tone fit; the association stuck.

No it's this ghost story movie from the 30s. Ray Milland plays it for (and names it after) the beautiful, haunted chick.

Stella by Starlight is a Jazz classic and I think it's written by Victor Young. It does have lyrics, but they are probably written later. Most of the versions I know are instrumental. I didn't know there 's lyrics on it untill I heard Will's interpretation, which blew my mind away.

Happy Happy Joy Joy. ACK!! Special thanks to YardGnome for bringing it up over in the happiest song thread and causing this to go over and over and over in my mind. Makes you want to go around tossing Ooompa Loompas after a while!

My Love Is A Fever - by Over the Rhine
words: Linford Detweiler
music: Detweiler and Hordinski
recordings: Amateur Shortwave Radio, Besides, Eve

my love is a fever
my love is a fable
my love is jazz licks
improvised by toddlers
bold Ulysses by nursery rhyme
and firelight

my love is a metamorphosis
reason cold logic
intuitively speaking
my love is syncopated
spoon-fed ignorant
well-read

my love is singular
my love is commonplace
as a gravedigger's own birthplace
my love is a medicine
feeds the sick heals the poor
turns up the volume on the blind

my word it's a trip
like a migraine
on a moving train
it parachutes aeroplanes
watch it fly

eyes soar hands clap
ears ring it's a sand trap
hair raising amazing
grey city transformations
as lips sink stomachs ache
monkeys shine fire flies
foxes trot hobs knob
porches swing brains storm
hearts attack and air supplies
heads light tails spin
steeples chase you along your chin
rock slides

out of the woods now
a virgin in buckskin
moccasins tall thin
she plays your mandolin
so maudlin you begin to spin
out of the woods now

The Caesar's - Jerk it Out

Wind me up
put me down
start me off and watch me go
I'll be running circles around you sooner than you know
A little off center
and i'm out of tune
just kickin this can along the avenue
But i'm alright

coz it's easy once you know how it's done
you can't stop now
it's already begun
you feel it
running through your bones

and you jerk it out
jerk it out

shut up
hush your mouth
can't you hear you talk to loud?
No I can't hear nothing 'cause I got my head up in the clouds
I bite off anything that I can chew
I'm chasing cars up and down the avenue
But that's ok

coz it's easy once you know how it's done
you can't stop now
it's already begun
you feel it
running through your bones

so you jerk it out
jerk it out

Coffee & TV - Blur

"So give me coffee and tv
easily
I've seen so much, I'm goin blind
and I'm braindead virtually-

Sociability
is hard enough for me,
take me away from this big bad world
and agree to marry me
so we can start all over again."

Gin - Drew Bunting

I wasn't there,
But my mother swore she saw the angel Gabriel
The day that I was born.

I never dreamed
Anything like that,
But I remember giving my new brother
Half my toys.

That's how we lived,
And to mouth and spirit, never fearing
We'd grow up like the jesters that we were.

And when we'd weathered their storm,
They brought us wine,
But we turned our glasses over,
Didn't shake our heads or notice
When they said, 'Excuse me, sir?'
They did not realise
We would carve them into time.

Time brought us well,
Well beyond the reach of anyone
We both had won together in the rain.

Still, it must come.
As you stopped to light our cigarette,
I walked ahead.
We never were the same.

And he bled dirty red wine,
And I drank gin.

As the miles grew thick between us
And I read my Shakespeare, dug my grave
And he swam the horizon, his new friend.

And I woke up
On the sidewalk,
Just another night of soft decline.
I wonder where my shoes went
As I'm walking into traffic signs.

I meet him
Half-delivered,
But he calls me brother, joy and lover.
No more.
This is too much
All at once.

And at last we stand eye to eye,
But he looks so tall,
And I don't know how it happened,
But the days have gone; we were so young,
But we both turn,
And we both say,
"Yes I know.
I would turn you into stone."

Not sure who sings it but I think it's from the 70's if not before, maybe George Jones or Charlie Rich "..about old dogs and children...an watermelon wine."

It's Tom T Hall, if anyone cares. "Old Dogs and Children and Watermelon Wine" It came up at work when dandelion wine came up.
