View Full Version : Threads You Avoid and Seek
Works
2 Feb 2008, 11:17 PM
I find myself not reading or posting in threads if there are certain words or topics presented. Threads I avoid:
Most threads with religious or philosophical debates.
Threads with the word "God" in the title.
Threads with Hustler in the title, though ones posted by him are fine and sometimes amusing.
Threads concerning politics.
Threads I seek:
Picture threads
Useless online tests
hypothetical situations
anything from the troll box
Threads that rant or rave
Discussions on gender
Interactive threads
Discussion on language
I suppose you could also avoid or seek threads by certain members, but I don't really find myself doing that.

This is meta, and there for Moved from the Pub.
P.S. I avoid Sensorish computer threads.

Ah, I wasn't even aware we had a meta forum. I tend to drop most of my threads in the pub for lack of a better placement.
Now I know to post all my macguffin flames cloaked with titles like, "Disk defragging or system error checks?"

:highfive: I agree. techienes is soooo istp.
I avoid philosophy threads too though...
Question: does that mean I'm not an N?
Answer: No! It just means none of you are philosophers. :P

I avoid political threads, not because I'm uninterested, but because I find discussing politics to be one of the most difficult things to do on a forum. Most people seem to aim to change their opponent's mind, while I would rather agree to disagree form the start, and then calmly and rationally discuss the differences.

I really hate the member of the year type threads. Who cares what others think, its just so social to care. You are likely secret E's, or even F's if you want to be so popular. Those threads seem like a both a waste of space, and there are just a handful of people in them, which makes all the other members that aren't mentioned feel out of the circle. Too much like an E sport, totally unsupportive to the other members which are truly more intp members anyway.
Threads I seek are those where everyone can chime in and share some genuine truth of their own, and no debates or one upmanships are going on.

I wish more people like you participated in political threads. Would you do it for me? ;)

Who the x cares what others think, its just so f'ing social of ya'll, and how is that I? If you crave popularity that much, you must be secret E's, or even F's ok?
Even introverts need validation sometimes, and an introvert's pursuit can look as silly and contrived as any other group's.

That validation though is not true validation. Its popularity contest that will temporarily star some one, but the only real or lasting validation is from yourself.

I completely agree that the threads are silly, but keep in mind that you're addressing a bunch of introverts who spend 94% of their free time in front of a computer, so where else is peer 'validation' (real or not) expected to come from?
...but the only real or lasting validation is from yourself.
Okay, Dr. Phil. Seriously though, I'll go out on a limb and speculate that a good portion of the memberbase here isn't exactly at a point where their own sense of self-worth is enough to grow into the kind of validation you're talking about. It's like baking bread: it's much easier to do if you have some starter than if you try and make it completely from scratch.

I read the Feedback forum, the Modbox, and any thread that pops up on New Posts with an interesting title.
And of course. . . any thread that seems to be getting a lot of hits.

Dr. PHIL, not me. But you've got to be kidding. To seek support from the outside for your self worth? That is the definition of E.

I pretty much watch the live posts for interesting threads. I'll go back & check threads I was in on the last time I was here to see if anything interesting developed.
I never EVER look at tech posts because I can't think of anything more boring in the universe. I avoid political threads for the same reasons OMW mentioned.

No, it's the definition of the fact that no matter how much INTPs may like to deny it, humans are social creatures.
Having one's sense of self-worth constructed by others' opinions and views is one thing (and what I think you think I'm describing); having one's sense of self-worth confirmed and/or augmented by others is another. I see those threads as a bizarre attempt at the latter. I'd argue that it's virtually impossible for an individual who has never been paid a compliment in their life to have a healthy level of self-esteem/-worth.

You too? Argh. You, omw, and I could start a movement! The Alice's Restaurant Massacree sane political discourse movement!
Unless I'm one of the political posters you avoid.

Will we have 8x10 color glossies with pictures and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what the picture is about?
I'm so in!

Even easier, I'll just take a bunch of "Watchtower"s from the big stack they always leave in the subway station.

I went through and looked at where the 53 (+ 3 Purg/deleted) threads I have started were
Blogs: 1 , which contains the large majority of all my posts.
Sexuality: 13, plus one that was deleted
Atelier: 10
Personal: 9, most of which are Happy Birthday type, plus one which was moved to Purgatory
Pub: 5, most of which failed miserably, unlike the threads in Sexuality :)
Playground: 3, see comment about Pub threads
Computers, Science, Rants/Raves: 2 each
Psychology, Feedback, Academic/Careers, Relationships, Welcomes: 1 each
I'm missing one, but don't care enough to figure out where. I would say that my posting habits would be generally reflected in this as well. I am mostly here to puke my guts in my blog and have fun, so that is where I go. I like to be creative too, so the Atelier gets my attention. I follow certain posters; I think most of them know who they are. When I log in, I go to new posts and right click to open what I think might be interesting in new tabs. Sometimes I let the LiveNewPosts run while I'm talking in irc. It is more to my liking and I'm glad to be back into it.

Programming tips
Threads that get into hairsplitting about why evolution might positively reinforce certain components of humanity.
Threads that rehash well-known controversies like race, abortion and God etc.
I often enjoy the blogs when I finally get around to reading them, but for some reason I usually resist reading them when I see them come up on the "new posts" screen. I'm not sure why I behave that way, on this latter point.

I agree with most things you say, but I'm having trouble with this. If an I has it all together (self-esteem-wise), what hope is there for an E? Or for the abused/neglected I that needs help recovering?
I avoid the kid threads. Haven't seen a pattern to the kinds of threads I gravitate towards (yet).

Avoid:
Does God exist? God does exist. No way. Way. Do you believe in God? I have faith. What's faith? You wouldn't understand. Would too. Would not.
.......I'm done debating it.
