What's so wrong about being happy? I'm happy at the moment. You drop dead. You're already closer to it than I am, I'd say.

ps: I'm kidding as well.

Mmmmmmm, the indulgent pleasure of melancholy. *licks lips*.

To do it occasionally is good. To do it all the time will destroy your mental health. If you genuinely feel sad, then cry, write peotry, stand on a windswept cliff etc. etc.
But to force yourself into sadness because of it's beauty.... no I refuse to do that.
There are times when I genuinely feel happy, usually they are when I am all alone and so no enneagram 4s will be there to hate me for it.

If you're happy and you know it and you really want to show it, call someone you hate and tell them how happy you are. the best revenge is living well - besides, melancholy for its own sake is just shallow pretension. As Serotonin said, there is beauty in loneliness and sadness, but you must remeber that every shade of the emotional spectrum can be beautiful. ie.
happy - a warm canvas, yellows and golds, sunrise/sunset
sad - cold or barren, this moonscape uses silvers and deep purples to tug at your heart strings.

"To force yourself into sadness because of its beauty"! To do it or not to do it. What an interesting thread. I think we would all agree that doing this frequently would be either unhealthy or ( eventually ) boring, but to do it at calculated moments. . . . .i've purposely done it, I'll admit. Then played Tom Waits' song "The House Where Nobody Lives" and "Georgia Lee". Maybe some Neil Young, or Eno doing "Spider and I". Then my jag is over and I'm up for some electric Miles Davis or something. K

If you're happy and you know it, pass to the left

I'm happy, but I don't know it. Shhhhh, don't tell me. Ignorance is bliss.

If you're happy but you don't know it, you're out of touch with yourself. And I thought you were an introvert...

If I'm telling you that I am happy and I don't know it, then I am contradicting myself.

If I am telling you that I'm happy and I'm not, then I am faking reality for you, thereby cheapening my own grasp of it.
