I've said before ( so am not listing ) that I'll only watch TV if there's an American sitcom on. They are the Supreme Achievement of the United States. From Married --- With Children to The Powers That Be to the great Larry Sanders Show...
But since the awesome Norm stopped a year or so back we generally don't get them here anymore.

So most of what I watch is comedy, eveything else on britist tv is either a) a reality tv show featuring z list celebrities or b) home improvement, how much do you eat/shit/swear/talk a day and that crap program where the two women one fat and one skinny go around cleaning peopels houses.

Monk, a recent discovery, is probably one of my favorites.
I recently signed up w/NetFlix (since there was praise for it on another INTP site) and have found it quite wonderful. Unlike the chain rent-a-DVD stores, NetFlix has a wonderful assortment of the TV and educational TV programs . . . the National Geographic and Discovery Channel specials are very cool. I think next in my queue are from the "Blue Planet" series.

I don't watch TV. But when I do, although I don't, I watch:
The Daily Show - because it's funny.
Decisive Battles - because it uses the Rome: Total War engine and is therefore the best way to show ancient battles.
Command Decisions - because I always get them all right. I stopped watching because it was too easy. B)

I don't watch it too much but it is really interesting when I do. There is always a new crime and clues are slowly revealed to see who did it. It is a very well done show that is worth an hour of your life. I'm sure others can give better reasons for its popularity.

Well, I think the forensics aspect of the show is fascinating. But I mainly watch for the characters. If I just wanted to watch the forensics, I'd tune into Forensic Files on the Discovery Channel. There are only a few main genres for TV dramas...Cop Shows, Lawyer Shows, Medical Shows, Westerns, and Sci-Fi. Almost everything has been done before, so it's got to have something else to draw you to it. Before CSI, there really wasn't a great forensics drama, but now everybody's copying it. What's best about TV shows, IMO, are the ensembles...the casts of characters...and how they react to certain events and emotions. Learning about the characters in bits and pieces is the greatest part. In movies, you normally get everything in the timeframe of a few hours. With TV, you have to pick up the clues episode by episode and piece together the information to try and figure out what makes a certain character tick. If a show doesn't have interesting characters, it tanks. The more interesting the characters, the more viewers a show pulls in. And it's different for everyone. For instance, my favorite CSI characters are Gil Grissom (entomologist) and Sara Sidle (physicist)...the more cerebral ones. For other people it could be Catherine Willows (ex-stripper), Warrick Brown (former gambling addict), etc. There's a character to appeal to pretty much anyone. And that goes for any hit show. It has to have a good concept, characters, writing, direction, and production values in order to succeed. And the original CSI has them all.

Thanks for the explanation. It does sound more like a nighttime soap opera than another "brave cops beating up dirty people" show. But I still won't watch. The call it 'programming' for a reason, and the cop and crime themes are the worst. It breaks my heart to be around some of my older relatives, who watch way too much TV, and see how fearful they are of every non-white stranger they see.
Well, that and my dad was a police evidence tech when I was really small, and I got into his textbooks. Scarred for life. Not entertainment.

Well, I wrote several pages only to have them eaten by the four hundred and four internet monsters.
Cowboy Bebop - Great in every aspect. Perhaps as close to a perfect anime as possible. The music composer for this is now my favoirte music artist. (Yoko Kanno)
Stargate SG-1 - At times exciting, at times the story/plot gets a little worn\thin.
Witch Hunter Robin - This anime is dripping with mood and angst. Great animation and story, although the plot was hard to follow at times. Its also said that it appears the makers thought they were too cool for characture development.
Several Superhero cartoons I occasionaly most likely watch due to some complex.
X-men Evolution - Very enjoyable. Thus Canceled.
Teen Titans - I think the reason I watch this show is because I admire the determination in the characture Robin.
Static Shock - The bad pun just won't go away. Still like the concept. Wish they would spend more on animation\writing.
Avatar: The last airbender - I like this so far, only seen two episodes. Geared towards kids but the world seems immersive and the charactures\concept\story original. Surprisingly made by Nickelodeon which I dislike for being crude/unoriginal/stupid.

Futurama, Family Guy, most of the Adult Swim stuff (not the anime), The Simpsons.
Not really any live action stuff that I love. Some I find fairly enjoyable, but not enough so that I would feel like listing them, or going out of my way to see them. In fact, I never go out of my way to see any non-cartoon show. Maybe I'm still young at heart. Or maybe the live action shows just mostly suck.
Probably the latter.

Oh yes another comedy program i forgot was the short run (only a few episodes) of attention scum on ch2 which was a very surreal perplexing humour show which was based around a character called the league against tedium who would go around shouting and doing the most random comedy routines ever, apparently also the character was based on the writings on Nietzsche , but i didn't know about this at the time the program was on.

Favorite old shows - The Rockford Files, the original "Outer Limits" had some great episodes ( and others that haven't aged as well as Twilight Zone ), Mission Impossible, and the Jonathan Winters show. Of the new shows . . . .my channel selection is limited with rabbit ears vs. cable . . . "American Dreams" is interesting in that they're finally starting to get into the turbulent 60's, albeit in a somewhat predictable way. I cracked up to see that Paris Hilton would play Barbara Eden as Jeannie. I'm glad they didn't put her in to play Elizabeth Montgomery. "The Adams Family" was fun when it first came out. "The Munsters" tried to imitate it, but came up lacking. Still, both had great theme songs.

You’re a glutton for punishment, aren’t you!
My list would simply include (see avatar) and “understanding” on the science channel.
Nova, on public broadcasting, is pretty good sometimes too. I’ve recently seen “Real Time with Bill Maher” and was surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. I’ve never even seen any of the latest shows on the big American networks, including American Idol. I did watch the very first season of Survivor though, a few years ago.
I despise the predictable sit-coms, which I find to be insulting to the intelligence and skew the perception of people and their roles. Except the Brady Bunch, of course.

The only thing close, IMO, is House, M.D. It's in a medical setting, obviously, so someone not familiar with all of that could quickly become lost. They dialogue is quick and witty and the diseases/treatments are kind of out there, but the interplay between the characters is absolutely brilliant. It's main draw, though, is the character of Dr. House, played by Hugh Laurie. He's snarky and a total bastard, but he says and does things that no one could ever get away with in real life. For instance, here's a transcript of one scene from the very first episode:
Dr. Allison Cameron: Why did you hire me?
Dr. Gregory House: Does it matter?
Cameron: Kinda hard to work for a guy who doesn’t respect you.
House: Why?
Cameron: Is that rhetorical?
House: No, it just seems that way because you can’t think of an answer. Does it make a difference why I think I’m a jerk? The only thing that matters is what you think. Can you do the job?
Cameron: You hired a black guy because he had a juvenile record.
House: No, it wasn’t a racial thing, I didn’t see a black guy. I just saw a doctor…with a juvenile record. I hired Chase ‘cause his dad made a phone call. I hired you because you are extremely pretty.
Cameron: You hired me to get into my pants?!
House: I can’t believe that that would shock you. It’s also not what I said. No, I hired you because you look good; it’s like having a nice piece of art in the lobby.
Cameron: I was in the top of my class.
House: But not THE top.
Cameron: I did an internship at the Mayo Clinic.
House: Yes, you were a very good applicant.
Cameron: But not the best?
House: Would that upset you, really, to think that you were hired because of some genetic gift of beauty, not some genetic gift of intelligence?
Cameron: I worked very hard to get where I am.
House: But you didn’t have to. People choose the paths that grant them the greatest rewards for the least amount of effort. That’s the law of nature, and you defied it. That’s why I hired you. You could have married rich, could have been a model, you could have just shown up and people would have given you stuff. Lots of stuff, but you didn’t, you worked your stunning little ass off.
Cameron: Am I supposed to be flattered?
House: Gorgeous women do not go to medical school. Unless they’re as damaged as they are beautiful. Were you abused by a family member?
Cameron: No!
House: Sexually assaulted?
Cameron: No.
House: But you are damaged, aren’t you?
[Cameron hesitates, and in that moment her pager goes off]
Cameron: I have to go.
If that doesn't make you want to watch the show, I don't know what will, lol.

1. only one good charachter (house), but he's very good.
2. repetitive show formula
3. no patients have died yet (of the one's i have seen)... a plausible death rate of hard to treat critical patients is not 0%... i think 50% at least would make the show more interesting/dark/realistic.

Dysfunctional offices and idiot bosses aren't funny? Since when?

Let me start out by saying I have seen one episode of the American and the British versions and that this is just my personal opinion.
1.) The jokes are just lame, if you can call them that. The main humor I see in the show is the awkwardness of the boss embarassing himself. I don't find it very funny.
2.) The show is slow moving. It seems to take an eternity for a joke or embarassing situation to come up.
3.) It doesn't really seem to go anywhere or have any kind of plot or purpose. The characters just seem adift and rambling with no script.
British entertainment is a mixed bag. I like Blackadder and Monty Python, but then again you are giving us The Office and all that other crap on BBC. I PRAY for HBO when I go to Britian because BBC reruns blow for the most part.

Still talking about the Office?
I also like Nanny 911, about disfunctional kids and their parents (who always seem the culprits). The stuff some youngsters get away with and the lack of involvement of husbands in too many families - unbelievable!
Guess not that interesting when you don't have kids...

Let's see here..
Malcolm in the Middle
Seinfeld
The Simpsons
King of the Hill
National Geographic Channel
X-Files
Dexter's Lab (and various other cartoons that used to be on cartoon network, not so much the new ones)
Cow & Chicken - especially
David Letterman
Becker
Friends
If I still had cable I'm sure I'd remember more, but I try to forget, because I miss the old shows I used to watch... back when I actually watched TV

I saw that last night. It was good, but I imagine its appeal would be gone after a few episodes.
