Work your N! What's the dog's name???

OK, continue...

We've been talking about getting a second dog for a while and we figured better now (to get the dog used to us and the house) than later (once the kid comes along). I realize the risk of dogs and kids - the kid is the priority.

Anyways, I wasn't really liking the dogs at the Humane Society, until I saw this one. We saw her and flipped through her paperwork, then went and looked at a few others while one of the volunteers took her for a walk. About 15 minutes later I wandered back over to the corner this dog was in, and she came through the door, volunteer in tow. She walked right up to me and sat down, leaning into me. I put my hand on her cheek and sarted to scratch as she looked up at me with a smile on her face.

All I could saw was "awwahg."

I didn't expect to get a dog today, but I said yes after about an hour of rational debate with my wife (and myself, of course).

The dog is estimated a 6 years old and is mostly rottweiler, with some lab mixed in. She was brought into an Albequerque Humane Society a few months ago, then transferred up here. Since she's got some age on her she didn't "sell" but that doesn't bother me. She's a good dog.

And really tired. :)

Anyways, I've been calling her "Nona" - short for "No-Nah-Meh," a variant of "No Name." My concern is having the dominant first syllable (NO!) as part of her name, but I'm thinking she'll understand the difference in our tones. So for now it's "Nona" unless something better comes along.

I assume it's the camera but those are some nifty pupils! I'd just call her "dog" or something. My grandmother has two miniature pinchers, but I call them different names all the time. Names such as: dog, jeter-dog-head-face (everyone else calls him jeter), sophatza (everyone else calls her sophie), triangle face, pear head, gimp (jeter's got a bad hind leg), fat dog (sophie), skinner dog (jeter), jetorz, sophorz, anxiety-disorder dog (jeter) :D, etc..

Heh...we tossed around variations of "Dawg" and Dee-Oh-Gee." :)

And it's the camera, she has typical rotty, brown eyes. I had to use my flash and had zoomed in for this pic in tough light...I'll get some better ones once I've got some better light.

It's hard photographing black dogs (Sadie, our first dog, is a doberman-lab mix with similar colors) and out of a hundred photos I only have a handful of really good ones.

Congratulations on the new addition. She looks great. Big black dogs are usually the most difficult to adopt out (especially lab mixes), so it's not surprising she was in the system so long. It often doesn't have much to do with their personalities.

If you're concerned about her confusing the name with "NO!", but you don't want to change the name, you could try other commands. For example, "BAD!", or more specfic commands such as "DOWN!"

I thought about that, but after having Sadie for 3 and a half years, it's instinctual for me to say "no," which NoName seems to understand, so I'd like to stay consistent.

I just went outside with her and she jumped up onto one of our patio chairs. I said "down" fairly calmly, but stern, and snapped my finger towards the floor. She obeyed and I gave her a little treat.

She seems to understand more than I expected. :) It's fun trying to figure this out. :)

Name her "kitty", the dog that is.

You people seem to have the naming ability of a bunch of SJ's. "Dog"?!?

Name her something unique and special to you. You can get a lot crazier than with kids (unless your last name is Zappa and you don't mind they will hate being named "Moon-Unit").

lol. I was thinking exactly the same thing. Next thing you know the suggestions of "spot", "rover" and the like will start coming in.

I usually give it a few days with a new pet to let the name come to me, always does sooner or later.

Don't ask why, but that dog's name is Acres. Ay-kerz.

I named my cat as soon as I got her. Just look at the dog and try different names and see which one suits her. You could name her something in Elvish, so that way it would be something unique.

I said:

I'd just call her "dog" or something.

I agree- that seems most reasonable. If you have two or more dogs, then "dog 1," "dog 2," etc., or "big dog," "small dog," etc..

Kona.

I liked the sound of Nona, but the vet suggested against it, like I had expected.

So Kona is in the lead so far, with approval from the spousal unit.

Originally I named my dogs Angel Lee and Kilwer, but as most people seem to be frightened of big white fluff balls named Kilwer, I have resorted to calling him everything from my mother's favorite, Bubba, to Mr. B, B, Chica, Beedle, Yo, You of the white hair-tail-and-legs, Pierre, Lug, Chump, Skis For Feet, and Poodle. So far he's seemed to keep up with the changes pretty well.

"Kona" seems to be workinig...we've got her responding to the name. It's amazing what a few treats will do. :)

Anyone who comes over need to see a smile from me...cuz she's looking for approval. But she's very submissive to humans.

She's definately an alpha dog in the canine community and is an obvious stray (she wanders when walking with others, including my wife) but listens to me. She'll stay by my bedside until I get up and won't eat unless I'm the one to give her food.

I sit in a corner while working (I work from home most of the time) and she won't let anyone near without my approval. A simple hand out or smile lets her know I'm OK, then the guest gets a loving lick and she submits.

Unfortunately, I think her hips are rusty. :( That's one of the reasons I advocate mixed breeds and getting mutts from the Humane Society. Still, she'd have to end up somewhere and we seem to have bonded.

I really like her. :)

I usually call my dog "dog" but his real name is muffin. I call my cat doctor or mr or sir or something and talk to him like I am talking to a english nobleman. I used to think its kind of funny but now its a habit.

"Bratwurst" because it sounds like Rottweiler. I bet she'd even like to eat a slightly less seasoned form of it. Pretty dog, by the way, but I'd like to see her build. I'm obsessed with dogs' builds. Female rottweilers are stockier than the males, I believe.

A ressurection. :)

It's funny this thread has been bumped cuz Kona hasn't been eating well the past few days. Nothing but milkbones. We'll take her to the vet if she doesn't eat breakfast tomorrow.

Otherwise, she's filled out and aside from her hips has been perfectly healthy. She's comfortable with us and has turned out to be one of the most friendly and loyal dogs I have ever known. She's really a pleasure to have around and loves our daughter.

Name it Rusty, and then after about a week of conditioned response, start using, Dusty, Musty, Busty, Crusty, and Justy and then watch the animal respond to every variation that sounds like Rusty.

Reminds me of our now deceased golden retreiver who was named "Buddy" but responded to "Buttercup."
