View Full Version : ISTJ rant about INTPs.

Hi INTP's. I got this ISTJ rant at MBTICentral on NF Idyllic. Read this...
Just my impressions, but...
The thing that annoys me most about INTPs is how they think that if a concept works in their intellectual sandbox then it's just as valid as an actual fact. This is most annoying, and probably the main point of conflict, in our religious flamewars. The concept of god works in their sandbox so god is a valid concept. That something works conceptually doesn't matter to me, all I care about is what is really real. Reality existed eons before the human mind came about and will exist long after we're all blasted back into stardust. I'm not advocating any kind of unthinking scientism, just that people check in with physical realty and maybe back up their ideas with some evidence before spouting off.
The INTP in it's 20ish male dork form, which I encounter often in the INTP IRC channel, is also quite annoying as they seem to think they're all geniuses. Because they're INTPs and Einstein was an INTP and there are all these glowing descriptions of INTPs on the web. In actuality they're a bunch of 20ish snot nosed brats who aren't old enough to know shit. Being a 20ish snot nosed brat myself I know I don't know shit.

Oh, it's the 'Which type do you get along the best?' thread on mbticentral.

Why would we bother to respond to that?

Ah well, I thought it was quite amusing. Made me smile.

Fixed/Clarified title. This man has clearly earned his J and should be duly represented.
End response.

An SJ defending scientific thinking against the tyranny of INTP amateur theocrats... we have entered the twilight zone.

Oh, come on. There are some valid points.

You mean like: Are INTPs less empirical than other types? What do you think?
The snot nosed brat comment is just lame stereotyping (even if there's a kernel of truth in every stereotype).

Likely so, and I can see how that would be annoying to the general public. I'm certainly not trying to condemn INTPs, especially since I am one... but hell, I even annoy myself sometimes. I think every type should struggle to achieve balance and develop as a person; however, a lot of INTPs (particularly younger ones) actually try to fulfill INTP stereotypes since, on this forum, they think it means they will be accepted.
The snot nosed brat comment is just lame stereotyping (even if there's a kernel of truth in every stereotype).
Yes and no. Young INTPs haven't developed their inferior functions yet, plus they often have little wisdom in the form of life experience, so, yes, they can come across as sheltered, elitist, know-it-all "snot nosed brats" who have no idea what they're talking about. Not always, but sometimes. On the flip side, I realize that the ISTJ's comment was a gross generalization full of SJ condemnation goodness.

He's right to an extent if I exclusively evaluate myself (I'll admit I think in the way he describes, valuing internal consistency over utility).
I definitely fit under Lurker's description of the INTP who reforms his movement to conform to the stereotype. Whenever I note that I'm considering something 'sensor-ish' and recoil, I have to remind myself that I'm a person, not a cookie-cut type.

my response is that a crude empiricist had a row with some arrogant spiritualists. I'm glad I missed it.

I was thinking more like 20 year old vs 20 year old.

I think it's very important to base your ideas on reality. I mean it's fun to think about what could be possible, but I'm opposed to basing concrete policies on untested speculation.
Is this unusual or do I misunderstand?

Better than I expected from an ISTJ... but still not a compelling argument at all.
On the rare occasions that I hop into the #intp IRC channel, it's always pretty awesome, especially when I'm talking.

It doesn't seem very satisfying discussing this if the poster is missing from the thread... Who are we to argue with?
My dumb ass assumed Miagi posted the message and I went through all the trouble of thinking of how I might respond. I could have been wasting my time in more satisfying but equally unproductive ways.

I think there's a high probability he got pegged early and subsequently toyed with for amusement. /speculation
I would personally prod someone if they had their heals dug in too deep whether I believed a word of what I was saying or not. Perhaps that's at the heart of the snot nosed sentiment.
20 yo INTPs (or any age for that matter) can be snot nosed too. I've seen plenty take a good bitch slap here for being just that.

Hey, listen, this guy is at mbticentral. His name... sassafrassquatch.
I didn't think the name was so important to you. What interested me was what he actually said.

Yo! To blame an INTP for not being empiric is close to an insult!

Sadly, to an extent I agree with the guy. I can't tell you how many times I've been accused of "talking down" or demeaning people in every day conversation arguments. I'll commonly state things I'm not entirely sure of as fact until someone calls me out. If nobody notices it gives the illusion that I know wtf I'm talking about...

My internal dialog says "I'm not so sure", but "I'm positive" tends to come out of my mouth...

hardly surprising, INTPs can irritate me in similar fashion. Not because they gravitate toward the abstract, but in doing so, neglect to check in with reality, either evidence-wise or application context- wise. Yes, there is such a thing as pointless mental masturbation.
That said- whatever, man, better than being an SJ!

That's just INTP's thinking. We do that whole day. Our greatest gift, but oh, our biggest curse.

Anyone who isn't aware that they don't know shit probably isn't an INTP....
