View Full Version : Music That Overwhelms

There are a few pieces of music that consistently put me in moods that I rationally consider dangerous but cannot seem to avoid once I start moving that direction. Are there any composers, lyricists, bands or what have you that engage you so personally that you both seek them out and avoid them, like an addiction?

That only happens when I listen to Burzum...

I suspect it's some kind of Si thing though...

John Frusciante.
He sculpts music like no other person and does it naturally, effortlessly. The trouble is, he's seen plenty of trauma in his life and it emanates from his music. I'm a big fan of his work, but a lot of it pin points much sorrow in my own life. It doesn't matter that I know it'll alter my moods, probably in the melancholy sense, because, well, I guess it's worth it. In some instances it's quite a cathartic thing. It's a very subjective matter so gladly I can still enjoy it for the most part. There's no doubt he has a lot of my respect.

examples:
Every Person (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkGqJKR-32s)
The Last Hymn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLTm4CODeaw)

There's nothing wrong with Si. We (here on this board) tend to treat our inferior functions as if they were, well, inferior. By learning more about them and experiencing them, we can often experience much more than we thought possible.

Anyway - to OP - yeah, music does it for me.

huh? I didn't say it was wrong. o_O
To the contrary, I find Si rather fascinating, I wish it was more 'accessible' for INTPs...

Thanks for posting this - I hadn't come across his stuff before. Powerful music. I'll buy myself a CD next time I manage to get to the mall.

In reply to the OP, I usually only listen to music that matches my mood, otherwise it grates. But there are a few albums which probably fall into that category, probably a combination of the memories associated with them and the actual music. There are a couple of Tori Amos albums, and a few songs like What About Me? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zawR7VYNdNg).

I think I should let you know, don't get...

'Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-shirt'

Or 'Smile From the Streets You Hold'
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/57541.jpg

They were written and recorded while he was a drug filled mess, and the music reflects it quite vividly. There is some good music on them but its much more of an avant-garde scrap-book or something you'd look into once you've heard more recent material.

Oh and 'A Sphere In The Heart Of Silence' is a mostly electronic, more a concept album.

Take your pic from the rest of his collection, you can't go wrong.

E.S. Posthumus does it for me, as well as Corvus Corax.

I think the blend of modern and classic music is the key for me.

The following videos have nothing to do with the songs that accompany them.

E.S. Posthumus : Pompeii (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vLaf2eEi2Y)

Corvus Corax: Mille Anni Passi Sunt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrRWH-p9WHw)

Yeah, there's music like that for me. It comes and goes though. I need to be in the right mood for it, for one, and for another, what a song does for me one year it might not do for me the next. I've found that I have the biggest reaction to the stuff that touches areas of me that are weaker or less matured.

Because of his overwhelming J-omosexual tendencies, eyebyte cannot post here.
He has stated that this song is what moves him.

Hell. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5dSHFerBV4)

I also enjoy this song (perhaps not to the extend of being "moved,") so I legitimize this post with my approval of the song.

If I tell you that one of mine is Broken Wings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWyeVfuolT4) by Mr Mister, would that encourage you to post a few of them?

Diamanda Galas always seems to be able to mess with my emotions.

Here's her singing "Gloomy Sunday"

Then, in more of a rock genre "Do You Take this Man?"

Which Tori Amos albums?

Which Tori Amos albums?

Under the Pink and Little Earthquakes.

They're both very emotional albums, but they're also both inextricably linked to a particular event (my flatmate at the time played both of these albums over and over as a way of working through the grief of losing her sister).

Great choice. I (somehow) was only recently introduced to her.

Another one that tends to have a weird effect on me is Genesis P-Orridge coupled with Pigface. You'd have a hard time finding that on YouTube, though.

nice.

Reminded me of Satie's Gymnopedies #1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qh0WaDA3Il4)

I would have posted the orchestral version but couldn't find one that did it justice. The solo piano gives a more sombre appeal.

I like just about every mood there is to music. The only band I avoid sometimes is Weakling. As much as I like some black metal (Enslaved, Ulver) that band is just so despairing it's not often I'm in the right mood for it (ie Cut Their Brain And Place Fire Therein).

I often seek passionate/aggressive music, though not necessarily angry. Of course that's always good too. If I want to mellow out more I'll listen to stoner/psychedelic rock.

 that's a good one, it doesn't overwhelm me but I definitely like it.

hmmm let's see..."Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" by Soft Cell...99 Red Balloons cover by Goldfinger..Billy Brag "Waiting for the Great Leap Forward"...and all the classics from Blood Brothers and Les Miserables musicals.

Now I have to kill you.

I was totally with you when you said classics by The Blood Brothers until I realized you probably weren't talking about the band I was thinking of.

From Pigface, I always liked the stuff that Meg Lee Chin worked on. Her solo stuff was amazingly good. "Eat Shit You Fucking Redneck" made me smile. Here's Nutopia with a fitting Sims 2 rendered music video.

Ah ... Nutopia is a good one. Yes, she does have that growly force that makes you take notice.

hs, that would run the danger of giving me street cred!

or did I just end any chance of that by using the term "street cred"?
