Referencing this thread. Would you be willing to volunteer as a Mentor to a fledgling newb with perhaps a postcount of around 25 or 50? Basically answer questions they have about the forum, ensure they stay away from common newb mistakes, or such? I'm interested in how many of us would be willing to commit to this.

There will be a list somewhere of willing Mentor volunteers, and then newbs could PM them to ask if they'd be willing to take them on. It would have to be agreed to by both parties.
You wouldn't ever have to be like "Oh, crap. I got assigned as a Mentor to this wanker?"
I think this could help with reducing the number of newbie witch burnings that Edahn pointed out.

Okay seriously. It's a cool idea because if the new member has questions about topics which have been discussed, or about MBTI, about forum history, etc., or just about anything, they can just ask that person.

I've actually done this once or twice in a particularly unofficial capacity and wouldn't be opposed to doing it in the future. Good thing very few people seem to know who I am or I might actually be expected to be helpful.

Also, I'd like to point out that my postcount isn't very indicative of the sheer amount of wandering the forum I've done over the years.

douche-baguerry at its worst. Most normal(non INTP) people have children, they believe their germ is important, that they are handing to the world a replicant of themselves, that their ideas, beliefs, and values should live on.
At the next level of hell are people who raise gerbils and hamsters, I don't know what the fuck they are thinking, but they tend to care for them and lead them towards a productive life.
Lastly come the INTP mentors, they mean well, but, lets face it, social graces are not our forte. Would you want to be led in a mating ritual by Richard Simmons? a debate on the purpose of life by George Bush? Proper Rap syntax by Queen Elizabeth II?. There are some things in life that are just not meant to be, I'm afraid that leadership in forum behaviour, nurturing of N00bs, the gentle and careful nurturing of our young, its just not our bag
We are Ps people, we take things as they happen. learn and adapt. Do you really want to control what happens on this forum? Do you really want to even out every little bump on the road? Throw a wrench in the works!

Okay, you suck at nurturing things. We get it. Projecting your failure on the rest of us isn't working for you. Please refrain from posting in this thread in the future. Plenty of INTPs are qualified for this role. Not to brag, but I've actually been pretty good at taking care of other people and encouraging their success both in a work situation, a family setting, and in my personal life.

So, Adam. You're saying that you'd be willing to sponsor a newb to make sure they had a gentle entrance to the forum? Because if you weren't willing to do that, I might have to kick your ass. Hey, I think he should be an option. But that's up to him. I think the Mentor/Newb relationship should be voluntary on both parts. Although I'll confess I'm willing to somewhat shove people into accepting a role as potential Mentors. It's for a good cause, yes?

I dunno...maybe I'm underestimating the fearsomeness of some old timers to a noob, but I don't see this taking off with an INTP majority. It's a good idea, but there are too many cracks to slip through. This is exactly the sort of thing that usually requires mandate in the real world. I think a noob would welcome a Sponsor at a certain point. Especially if the idea were suggested to them. Especially if they were on the verge of being a problem.
Right. It's not like a mentor would have to be in their face (I certainly wouldn't want that) unless they act in a manner contrary to the forum's guidelines/mores, at which point a mentor ought to proffer the "mentorship" for the good of the n00b and the forum at large.
Otherwise, I figure a mentor is a passive being to the extent not explicitly welcomed otherwise. Introduced (during which time a friendly package of links to the FAQs, etc are rendered) and then retreating to a kind of living FAQ available in the background (interpreting the written and unwritten rules as necessary) unless called upon otherwise?
That's how I would have enjoyed having a Mentor. Little did I know the standing madmin policies on this or that until I bumped up against them directly or otherwise. Or how excessive multi-quoting is frowned upon, etc.
Just ruminating.
edit: I'm practically a n00b myself, hm?
MadamI'madaM
18 Apr 2008, 08:11 AM
And do you consider yourself fearsome to a noob? Seriously?
No, but I don't consider myself all that similar to a lot of posters here.
In case there was some misinterpretation, what I was referring to was the miserable old coot factor motivating noobs to seek out a mentor. I don't fit that profile for a number of reasons.
EDIT: that didn't explain shit
I mean that the fearsome ones are the reason for noobs wanting us benign mentors.
RE-EDIT: although the fearsome ones play a vital role in the circle of [something that rhymes with life], and the perception of their overall pissiness is usually skewed by ages-old politics and troll regulation.

Speaking of, should the madmins even be included as possibilities? Couldn't that give the appearance of preferential treatment by some? Especially if said newb is really a douche and needs an offical smack down. Not to mention the fct that they give enough of their time to this place the way it is and I imagine they also field enough stupid questions.

Well, the thing with me is that there's a lot of threads that I only read grudgingly. That is, only because they're obviously important. Like the BlackMage thread, for instance. I only skimmed through that, which was quite a painful experience, I might add, but it was necessary, because it was a big event. So I'm thinking that if I had someone to send me a daily update on what those threads are about and who the important players are, I'd have a much nicer time at INTPc.

Excellent point, it doesn't have to be an official "adoption" the list can serve as a "who to contact in case of ______ " list. It's just a way of letting them know that the people on the list are okay with being contacted regarding questions of the newb nature.

The way I see this is the good newbs have more people invested in their success (and the forum's) and can help them to more quickly become productive (and fun) members, and the bad newbs will be gone just as quick, if not quicker.
It's not as if we are all overly prone to deep emotional ties and I don't see any thinking member going to the mat to defend a complete and utter douchebag like some we have seen recently. All of the people on the list seem rational enough to realize that even if they really like the person it does not mean they are a good fit here, it happens.

Obviously not everyone on the list fits the description of the program, but I think this is a great list for us to start with. I'm not sure how we should divide it up (picking people is a horrible idea I think). But maybe we could send them a PM and see if they are interested in this idea?

Two things:
- Why would you want to adopt, and therefore encourage a non-INTP n00b?
- I don't recognize people after they've been here for years, let alone months. So if someone cares enough. . . then they can assign an INTP n00b to me. Otherwise, I'll just watch and learn.

The problem with them coming to us is that they might not be aware of the new program, or being new or worried about contacting someone initially. They can choose whether or not they are interested in participating though. So why not send them a PM and just let them know you are here for them if they want you to be?
I wanted to avoid picking people, so we'd come up with something arbitrary so people didn't feel like they were getting picked last....but whatever, I'd rather get going with this than spend a week trying to figure out that detail.

That's all well and good, but there still aren't any established protocols for this.
Am I just supposed to send these people a PM letting them know they can ask me questions should they arise, or follow them around holding their hands until they get a handle on how this place operates? I ask because if it's the latter, I should probably be moved to the "Does not bite via PM" list instead.
I'm far more likely to watch someone make an ass of themselves than step in and intervene. However, if they went out of their way to ask a question, I'd be more than willing to respond thoughtfully.

Er, I mean, well done, super job, way to clap at me and....stuff. Wanna hug?
He was assigned to Bluebell, take it up with her.
*grin* I'm a follower of the Twitch mentoring method (more out of laziness than anything else):
Am I just supposed to send these people a PM letting them know they can ask me questions should they arise, or follow them around holding their hands until they get a handle on how this place operates? I ask because if it's the latter, I should probably be moved to the "Does not bite via PM" list instead.
I'm far more likely to watch someone make an ass of themselves than step in and intervene. However, if they went out of their way to ask a question, I'd be more than willing to respond thoughtfully.

this is getting no where, even if we [noobs] are being assigned mentors, we all know that no one is going to ask for help or guidence. it is a complete waste of time. be honest, have any of you [mentors] actually been asked to do anything of substance yet? any real intp is probably not going to realize they need help and if they do, they are going to be too flamming lazy to ask for it.

Well, maybe the really dumb ones would act in the way you describe, but I've had some luck. Mostly, I've explained some of our forum memes to people, I've welcomed them to the site in a personal way, and I've allayed what I think were some fears that INTPc is likely to swarm like piranha on newbs.
This might be more accurately described as "newb encouragement" than being a bona fide Mentor, but I think it addresses the problems we identified which prompted this thread.

Well, that remains to be seen. Actually, I have reason to suspect you are not entirely accurate in your prediction.
I've approached the two people I've been allotted to approach via PM in the manner that I would prefer to have been approached were the roles reversed. That is: directly, honestly, and with clarification that I'm there to help answer what questions I can, while otherwise I'll remain out of their hair -- including the case where they'd prefer to ignore/reject my offer altogether.
We'll see how it goes.

i think a lot of INTPc members have meandered over there for some reason or another. a few have even stayed.
i go over maybe twice a year as a lurker to see if anyone's bitching about NTs. it can be entertaining reading. so much 'wrong' backed up by so many saying, "yes! that's IT!"
not to mention the fun i get reading the things that well-known posters from here have said.

You guys are so cute. :)
Only INTPs would sit around and argue about a theoretical "Help the n00b" program that would never really take off within an INTP group anyway.
The system as implemented will police itself and "train" members (and it has).
And if they don't happen to get their hands slapped at first, n00bs who want help will either be coached informally by someone who is observant, or they'll figure out who to ask for advice.
(... and barring that, give 'em all to Hustler, like he asked for. Heh.)

We really are cute, like a kitten under a car tire.
Regardless of the half assed way in which we are doing it (which was to be expected) I think there have been benefits already, personally, I have talked to other members via pm more in the last week or so than ever before, newbs and more established ones. Which has not sucked at all, and it is another venue for the newbs to jump into a conversation and know that we probably won't kill them immediately.
This was not ever meant to be a hand holding, kumbaya singing, group hugging, lets' skip around the park together while babbling nonsense incoherently while drooling like mongoloids and be BFF's.
Not enough booze in the world to make me play that game.
Plus, for me, it has made me pay more attention to them, and I realized, some of them don't suck. Yet.

An INTP mentor wouldn't do jackshit until you nag them
Can't I just get a tour-guide and show me to all the cool nooks-and-crannies of this forum.
And the idea of a "mentor" strikes me as very ghey, in the non-homosexual sense, as it pertains to some form of relationshp of care and respect.
A lecturer/professor of mine suggested I become a mentor of 1st year students here. I laughed in her face and said "HAHAHAHA! DO I look like I have some form of leadership qualities?" Mentoring is such a ghey concept.

Careful with your vocabulary, newb. If you were in Works classroom he would rap you on the knuckles with a ruler and give you a long-winded lecture about political correctness and how you are using a doubleplusungood vocabulary which could lead to wrongthink.
Probably so, but only because if you say it out loud you can't distinguish it from gay. In text, ghey (my preferred form is ghei, but whatevs) is completely distinct from gay and not at all a slur.

I believe this is a dark path...
The only accepted phonetic spelling would be gey. Other than that, one would have to accept the phonetics of u for you and r for are.

i'm not really one to work well with a mentor, but i am fond of masochistically requesting negative feedback about myself / reality checks. am i annoying enough as a relatively new person that i need to tweak any of my behaviors?
if so, i can independently adjust.
i haven't gotten any vibes or anything. but sometimes i'm really clueless about that. and my basic assumption about any new group of people is that they secretly can't stand me / wish i would fuck off and die, but are too polite to say so. so. yeah.

My only advice would be to drop your need for critical evaluation.
The machinery of Internet forums allows but a glimpse into your global identity. Many times, any advice you'll receive serves a wider agenda of social conformity instead of providing instructive feedback into how you might "improve" your overall forum performance.
Just don't troll. Share your opinions honestly. Remain open to error.
