Do you all find yourselves identifying more with the heroes or the villains in movies, videogames, literature, etc? It seem to me like many of the villains are INTP's or something similar and the heros extraverts, and I almost always end up rooting for the bad guys. Perhaps this is a reason culture tends not to favor INTP's and intraverts in general, or maybe it's a result. What do you think?

I think this is your first post, go introduce yourself :)

But anyway....I think most bad guys are INTJ, ENTJ, or ESTJ. INTP's take up the role of the character that designs the mutant death ray, they let the other bad guy types deal with the politics. But yeah often I like to see the bad guy win, never happens though and I am usually just as pleased when the good guys win, it is more of an indifference than a preference...if that makes sense.

I think Count Olaf (from lemony snickett)might be an ENFP gone horribly wrong. Cruella de vil might be ISFP gone horribly wrong. "I have the best taste"

Good call.

Gollem is probably ISFJ gone horribly, horribly wrong but then it's hard to even class Gollum as a bad guy.

Doctor Octupus is INTJ.
Lex Luther ?
Kingpin ENTJ

In love story's ESTP's are often the bad guys while NF's or SFJ's become the good guys.

Thanks! I'm a 20 year old male college student in Texas, stuyding engineering. I was simultaneously shocked and relieved when I discovered the whole "type" thing and this website only last weekend. I'm glad to be here!

It's interesting that you bring up several F-type villains; I don't think there are many of those around. What do you think Kurtz from Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now was? Or how about Capt. Willard?

Probably best to take this to the introductions section of the forum ;)

Yes, Col. Kurtz would be an INTP.

Kurtz was insane. Even so, he did have a terribly Introverted Intuitive vibe about him. (That's him in my avatar, woopwoop). I can't say he's INTP, because INFP seems to fit him too well. Kurtz embodies the tourtured INFP amazingly.

I've said it before, real INTP characters are rare. I think the perfect INTP character is Hamlet, but he had other issues of his own making, too.

i prefer the villans to win, i suppose it is because i can identify with them the easiest. the hero always wants to work for the government, or if the bad guy is the government he doesnt want to get rid of the corruption for the president and his dead wife or whatever.

never understood that crap. im more a fan of the brain (pinky and the brain) than i am of bruce willis (DH). i say kill them all and let our lord satan fix them in hell

Hamlet would be an INTP if the tragic events hadn't transpired, but he goes insane with the thirst for revenge. And yes, real INTP characters are rare. The ones that are insane have a dominant F. And the ones who are cold, calculating scientists have a dominant J. Maybe somebody who doesn't want to be "part of the team" and is contemplating devious methods to destroy it would be an INTP.

I prefer anti-heros myself. I always like people of ambiguous morality.
If that isn't an option I'd say villains.
I once left a school production of Peter Pan halfway through so the pirates would win... and because it kind of sucked.

I think batman/bruce wayne might be INTP. He's all scientific, really introverted, and a good thinker. RARELY shows emotions, and very logical.

I like characters I relate to, be them hero or villain. I like to remain neutral. I like more "fallen angel" type characters. The ones that are good, but evil at the same time. Or that they do good, but in their way (which could be more destructive). Or ones that have inner problems. I like "dark" characters that are selfish and may do evil for it. But I hate ones that do evil just for the sake of evil without any actual goal other than causing damage, suffering, etc.

I think brain is INTJ. He's very decisive and has a plan. Pinky is ESFx...

As INTP's we're often represented by the N's, someitmes INTx's villians.
I many times identify more with the villian. I think that's becase the hero is usually is a conformist while the villians have an aspiration and he's working to achieve it, which can lead to progress.

I always liked Doctor Doom and the "Dread" Dormammu, mon. Of course I wouldn't want to have to wear the metal suit or have the scarred face of Doom, but his outfit LOOKED cool. I liked how he was often prepared with a Plan B or C. Once Riff Raff ( from Underdog ) forced one of his "henchmen" ( I like that word ) to lug around a heavy box when they would rob banks or whatever. Then lug it back to HQ again, un-used. It was referred to uncomprehendingly by the rank and file as "the Just In Case". Of course, it got whipped out and aimed at Underdog when the usual methods of atttack/defense were not proving effective. Worked against him the first time, but not the second, natch. Doc Savage would have been cool if he wasn't celibate. Adam Strange was interesting, with his outer space girlfriend and their dual rocket back-packs. Adult section fantasy anyone? How about The Watcher? Ultimate INTP or what? Or perhaps Eternity from Doctor Strange, but that's taking things "too far." K

I agree with Brain, but Pinky could be ENFP.. albeit not a very bright one.

I always rooted for Cobra in GI Joe and the Empire in Star Wars after I first saw ROTJ.

Cobra was flat out incompetent.

Stormtroopers couldn't hit the broadside of a barn, but they at least had an Empire.

It was the Ewoks that turned me to the darkside. Just run back into the bunker and napalm the forest.

Everybody was incompetent in GI Joe. Nobody could hit anyone except BATS (robot soldiers) with small arms. Their tactics often resembled 18th century calvary charges. Did you notice how people would bail out of planes and vehicles before they were even hit?

Ha, ha yes! You'd think soldiers able to out-reflex a missle could shoot better.

I don't usually identify with the characters, but I'm really picky on the realism and the depth of the story.

I usually don't identify witht he main antagonist. I feel more connected with the one pulling the strings. The evil wizard whispering in the ESFJ pawn's ear.

The one "villain" that I always rooted for the most was Wile E. Coyote. I kept wanting to finally see one of his plans work and he'd finally eat that annoying road runner. I also felt sorry for him since he was going hungry and having to eat tin cans.

Heh, made me think of Piter DeVries in Dune. My all-time favorite imaginary villain is Souvarine in Zola's Germinal, the anarcho-nihilist who wants to blow up the whole world. And yes, I identify with him. =]

Wouldn't you rather see Sylvester get Tweety Bird?

C.J.Woolf

While Tweety richly deserved to be killed and eaten, Sylvester was too stupid to manage it. So f him.

Wile E. Coyote was a beautiful loser. He worked hard and he used his imagination. They just weren't enough.

Point conceded. I was focusing on the "Tweetie dying" part, I guess. Perhaps we could let Snagglepuss stumble in to doing the job? "Heavens to Murgatroid -exit stage left." Or some normally innocuous character like Droopy or Boo-Boo could show their aggressive side and pounce. "Ohhh, Yogi, I don't know what came OVER me" *bats eyelashes while looking down at floor sheepishly and demurely*
