View Full Version : Astrology and Meyers-briggs

Pisces are the oldest sign in the zodiac....there have been a lot of birthday threads up, and right now is the time of the pisces (feb 19 to march 20). SO based on my own egosentric nature i think there is a link between pisces and INTP (i am both). I think the description of a pisces sounds a lot like an INTP. (mabye more INFP)
"...flexible...creative potential...doubt yourself...easy ways out of difficult situations...deceit...introverts...dreaminess...head-in-the-clouds...charity...kindness...helpfulness..."
I think most INTP's would find astrology a buch of BS, yet i have found it very interseting because before i knew about myers-briggs it provided a method by which i could "type" people.
The bigger questions im asking here are: Is there some correlation between astrology and Meyers-briggs type theory? If so was astrology one of the building blocks through which modern type theory was created? Will modern type theories be considered BS in 1000 years just as astrology is considered BS by many today?
NOTE: I found a couple of astrology threads...none really dealt with astrology and meyers-briggs, therefore i felt that this thread wasnt too much of a waste.

http://intpcentral.com/intp/archive/thread/438/?highlight=astrology#p6051
NOTE: SO rememmber this is not a bash astrology thread. I am intereseted in the validity of typing people in general, and how astrology may have evolved into modern type theory. :)
NOTE: whenever i say meyers-briggs theory or modern type theory im talking about all the psyc tests out there that try to group people based on their "personalities"

they're both models used to categorize personalities?

My INTP dad is a Pisces; my boy is a Gemini.
I'm a Sagittarius and have never really found that it corresponds to INFJness.

Right so does that imply that using a more "scientific approach" as in meyers-briggs testing is more accurate than the unscientific approahes of the past? Remmeber science is doomed to inaccuracy, re-inventing the wheel, and eventually a better system.

Astrology 'types' may be accurate. Perhaps it is just the test that is fatally flawed. Instead of asking the planets, ask the humans!

Ah... the archives.
These threads almost always get trashed. Just mention Astrology and conspiracy in the same sentence and see what happens...
It's funny, considering all of the other nonsense that gets discussed.
But, what was Jung trying to do when he evaluated the birth charts of married persons?

No, it doesn't imply it, but yes it's true.

Yes, pisces here too... on the cusp with aquarius though. I see more NT in aquarius and more NF in pisces (not saying if there is or not validity in astrology... I am just comparing the profile descriptions, whether they are valid or not).
Ah... the archives.
This poll (http://forums.intpcentral.com/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=48) says all that needs to be said about MBTI type and sun sign correlation, I think.

I'm not trying to trash anything by pointing that out, btw. I know my own natal chart almost by heart. ;)

Is it this one I choose "I worship all forms of typing people"? Are you some sort of secretary...?

To me, my astrology seems to fit well with my results. I have a lot of Air signs, which are flighty and Thinking related signs. My main sign is Gemini, with a scorpio moon. Since the moon sign displays the hidden desires, then yeah.. Scorpio moon would make someone very much an introvert if astrology were real. I think in my case it's just a coincidence, really. Then, Geminis never finish anything they start, and are very P like..
so as far as the
Introversion part of it.. yeah astrology fits (for me)
The Intuitive part, actually my astrology puts me as being very intuitive..
The thinking, well.. not so much.. I'm equally distrobuted between T/F astrology wise (which is true, I can never tell if I'm one or the other sometimes) but mostly I lean toward T functioning.
The P, definitely.. Geminis are as Perceiving as it gets.. they are basically a definition of ADD at it's funnest.
So I see a correlation between the two typing systems, for me only, though. I know some people's don't match up at all. But I'd urge them to look farther into astrology and learn to read natal charts. I did, and found it very interesting. Of course, some of the stuff just didn't fit at all, but it was obvious to me. There are some things in the INTP personality pages that don't fit me either. Moon signs are our subconscious desires, and your birth time is needed to identify it, but I'd suggest doing this. Giving yourself a perspective of your conscious and subconscious behaviors is cool, even if it's marginally incorrect, there is a chance it can coincidentally be right and tell you something you already knew, but wanted to look at in a different way.
Numerology is good for this too..
I think the basics of any typing system are the same. No matter if they're right or wrong, they're all pretty insightful in various ways, and I think they're all trying to give people a place where they don't feel so alone...

When i first read my pisces sun/pisces moon reading years ago i thought WOW thats me! Then i read the INTP descriptions only recently and thought WOW thats me! Mabye we read ourselves into the descriptions to some extent

Eh, I am not sure it has any correlation.
I have looked into it, I am a Gemini and INTPs seem, at least, to me, more like Geminis than Pisceans.
However, I have Pisces as my moon sign. Any coincidence? Who knows, I have stopped trying to know.

They have a term for that. It's something that begins with a "b", I'll edit this post later if I remember which one.

may? go fuck yourself.
astrology is based on the month you were born in. fuck off

Well to truely correlate the astrological signs, you'd need to get rid of the whole when you were born system and then merge 16 types into 12.

thus getting rid of any identifing feature of astrology, i like it

Perhaps a more accurate correlation between astrology and MBTI could be found by comparing one's Mercury element (Air, Water, Earth, or Fire) to that of the MBTI "type", since Mercury, in astrology, represents one's thought processes.

How about, the time you are born has nothing to do with your personality?

Aries doesn't coincide particularly well with INTP, but both are fairly acuurate for me.
And why always MBTI? What about socionics?

Ha ha. I also have a Taurus Mercury. I think there are different kinds of intelligence. Recently, I have been told that I have "common sense" by two different people. While it takes me longer to grasp theories (draw me a picture, please), I think an earth mind is defininately more grounded and practical; knowing what theories are useful irl. Perhaps this placement is more "sensing" related than intuitive. But that is just one planet, representing what level your mind is at. I believe my intuitive flavor comes from my Fire (sun, moon, mars, jupiter - all in Aries).

I should add that aspects between planets are modifiers of the placements. For example, if Taurus Mercury aspects Uranus (Air/rules Aquarius), it would lend that nature/quality, perhaps in the form of flashes of insights at a higher mental level you wouldn't normally get from a Taurus Mercury.

Ok, I want you to deal with Gemini sun, Leo Ascendant, + Pisces moon...it's not pretty.
Yeah, but I agree with you, taurus makes me slow to grasp things....but I am indeed grounded for sure.

My sun sign of Leo does not really share any INTP traits. My Chinese astrological sign, The Sheep, has very similar qualities, though :)

My astrological chart has INTP characteristics in it.
Sun in Virgo: Analytical, skeptical
Moon in Virgo: Cautious with emotions
Gemini rising: Talks from both sides of mouth, chameleon-like, jack of all trades
That's all I remember offhand, but Virgo and Gemini are both ruled by Mercury, and indeed I am pretty mercurial. I have a lot of Virgo elsewhere too.
