Looks like the midwest has mysterious possible serial killers. From the sound of things, there could be as many as 40 murders attributable to the Smiley Face Killers. The graffiti they've shown looks kinda creepy. I wonder if this is some kind of gang thing? Maybe a hoax? The fact that Art Bell got on board early on makes me skeptical, but who knows? America loves a good serial killer scare!

Who doesn't love a serial killer? I love reading crimelibrary.com (http://www.crimelibrary.com/)

Well I say, it's about time the crazy people went after the male college students. That whole 'missing/murdered freshman woman' scenario was getting so old...
Seriously though, this is strange. Strange and interesting.

The detectives also believe the victims were targeted. All of the young men were popular, athletic and good students.
I have nothing to worry about.

I have nothing to worry about.
Not quite.
From the killer(s), no.
From the FBI, maybe. The opposite of "popular, athletic and good student" seems to be exactly the profile they're looking for. Just sayin'...

This is cool. I'd love to work for the FBI developing profiles for these kinds of cases.
"Asked whether he believed there was a hidden message in the smiley faces, Duarte told CNN, "The message is, they're taunting the police"
That's the obvious answer, but what if these are some sort of human sacrifice in honor of how great and happy these young men lives were? In the Aztec culture, being a human sacrifice was one of the highest achievments possible.

I know, I know, I was thinking the same. But I'm not exactly a bad student, just not a good one. Plus, I live in California, so I have an alibi.

You were thinking about killing those guys, but between surfing and getting stoned, you were too busy to get around to it. No worries, dude. If you need a character reference, I'm there for you.

I love reading about the female killers, and their execution stories are rather erotic, too. (Actually, I had the idea for a Death Row porn movie. I think I wrote a blog about it on MySpace.)
Who is your favorite serial killer? I think Gary Heidnik was one of my favorites, or Henry Lee Lucas. And who can't forget Albert Fish?
(Sex and death have long since been symbolically connected, haven't they?)

"Sex and death have long since been symbolically connected, haven't they"
Yes, Freud linked "odd" sexual behaviors such as sado-masochism to the Death Instinct because certain behaviors (spanking, biting, whatever) violates the Pleasure Principal of the Id. Sexual imagery as well as things associated with death (IE a skull, skeleton) have been examined in a number of experiments including the whole "subliminal messaging" thing, but not with any convincing results
It would be adequate to say that sexual and violent scenarios both create similar states of arousal, but the link between the two is unclear. In the more "extreme" among our species, such as those mentioned, it's very hard to dismiss the connection between violence and sex.

So, was the smiley face at the location the body was found, or at the supposed location the body entered the water?
I dont think a hoax is involved.
Oh well, just another beer swilling, no neck, young male chuckle head. The world is a much better place without...did I say that out loud?

The smiley faces were found where they think the bodies went into the water.

Me neither, having read more about it. I think it's possible that some private detectives are trying to drum up hysteria to make money off this, however.

Yes, you did. I also think it's nice for a change of pace that this serial killer is going after college-aged young males. It's been a while since that's happened.

I like how the detectives assume the killers are dumb. They obviously know something if they are using drugs undetectable in autopsies and have had this going for as long as they have (assuming that the deaths were actually all caused by a group of serial killers)
