okay my suggestion is a word of the day box at the top of the forums just below the INTP Central picture, with the definition, context and synonums. And the mods could have a feature that they can add the words to. the link that would help the most would be http://phrontistery.info/clw.html i assume that this would be a great addition and be welcomed by all the INTP people, barring the mod who gets chosen to add them.

this will add quicker to our growing vocabulary and if we choose to use them IRL then the base knowledge of our lexicon will grow, hopefully to the stage where we can once again use the english language as it was used in victorian times. and not the way these americans slaughter the language with economical usage.

I think we should use polyonyms to explain the aptronyms that are frequently caconyms instead.

i do so agree. i use every word i know at school when it fits the occasion. and people stare at me as if to say "wtf did he just say?". this includes the teachers. morons

What's the use in learning words that noone ever uses? :)

It's interesting that you (Shai Gar) express discontent concerning modern-day butchering of the English language, while your own usage leaves much to be desired (in your posts, at least). So, what is your definition of proper usage?

Anyway, the "word of the day/week" feature seems like a great addition. Perhaps we could also spruce up the INTP CENTRAL banner at the top; presently it's quite tacky.

I'll make you a deal shaigar, I'll give your idea my backing when it's discussed by admins, providing that you don't curse or insult anyone in any way for two weeks, as I don't think you can. We would, of course, establish a penalty in this deal as well :)

Okay, just kidding, but I think this might be possible, it will be discussed.

Shai Gar

i promise not to insult anyone

The above is on the understanding that;

That noone insults me first, including in posts that have happened within an hour (either side) of my acceptance as of (0650 GMT 2005/3/05),
That the flamethrower forums are exempt from this agreement,
That there is no penalty on my part for failing to uphold this agreement,
That the person does not goad (unintentionally or intentionally) me into an argument, or goads anyone whose registration date falls between 2004/4/01 and 2005/7/04 into a debate of any kind
That the sky remains cloudless over San Antonio, Texas for 5 weeks next feburary to march

Alright, I'll present the idea. I will _not_ gurantee it will pass, but I will present it as an idea and give it my general support as opposed to neutrality or opposition. If you break the agreement, I break the agreement and withdraw my support, being what I would've been (neutral).

There ya go. ALSO, IF ANYONE NOTICES HIM BREAKING IT-TELL ME!

I think we should have a Rodney King-esque beatdown on INTP.

Except without the racism.

Who gets to choose the words ? Shai ?

And do we each have to use the current word in at least one post per member that day; or in all posts; or in the outside world ?

People are going to be rather surprised if I mutter the words 'retard', 'FUCK', or 'bitch' whilst shopping or conversing with strangers.

Not that I'm against the idea, but I have already worn out the 'bad influences of older boys' excuse a long time back....

I think it's kind of offensive to imply that he is lying.

What exactly makes you think he's younger than that?

Regard my avatar: can an avatar of an Avatar lie ?

Or does it just reveal an ultimate truth ? [ doubtfully glancing at everyone else's ].

Half of those words you have mentioned on this thread aren't even on dictionary.com....

What's the use in learning words that noone ever uses? :)

To make ourselves sound more intelligent/eccentric. :D

if the words get used more and more often it is feasable that they might become, once more, mainstream.

and all of the words that she used are in the compendium, the link is in the first post

It would be nice to also have phonetic pronunciations. I have a problem with picking up most of my vocabulary through text and not knowing the correct pronunciation.
Awkward moments anyone?

Shai Gar
6 Mar 2005, 05:39 AM
yes, there have been a lot of those awkward moment, mostly because a lot of my vocabulary has come from either books or straight out of the dictionary (it would have been nice if they taught vocabulary right through highschool in every english class) and back then i didnt understand the phonetic alphabet's symbols so i kept running into situations where i would say a word and my pronunciation would be corrected.

I'm for a random-word-o-the-whatever utility.

Good idea.
