View Full Version : The Heavy/Extreme Metal Thread

I'm using the terms "heavy" and "extreme" loosely here. Power metal, classic metal, thrash, speed, technical, black metal, death metal, progressive metal, doom, and so on are all welcome. I just want to make the distinction from pop metal (such as glam and nu-metal) because I want a more narrow focus.
This interested me because it seems to be one of the more inaccessible and controversal styles of music and I notice it keeps popping up in various threads. I hear people say things like "I love all music except heavy metal", or "it isn't real music, it's just a bunch of noise", or "it's satanic music" all the time.
For those who don't like it, I'd like to know your opinions on it. For those who do, what exactly do you like? What are your favorite genres, bands, albums, songs, etc? How did you get into it? Does anyone here consider themselves a metalhead (listening to exclusively/mostly metal, wearing all black or band shirts, frequenting metal shows, keeping up with the news, etc) and what have been your experiences with the metal community?

I am really terrible with labels and categories and such. I like some metal, I suppose; I pick songs though, not really groups and albums, so I can't be more specific  I am certainly not a metalhead, I don't wear band t-shirts and such (jesus, I have never in my life done anything like that) and I have no idea as far as metal communities are concerned. If I *have* to speak in genre terms, metal is not my most favourite kind of music. I still like some though.

Again, I float in Vagabond's boat about music. I listen to good songs, not groups or albums or genres.
In general, I type random words into my p2p client and download random songs from the results. Some of the songs I have found this way have been great. Some of them have been heavy metal and are still in my playlist. I can't pronounce the bands' names, though; and I don't really 'know' any heavy metal bands, so I don't get any impulses such as, "I KNOW, I'M GONNA DOWNLOAD SONGS FROM BAND X!!!!666" Do you have any particular heavy metal songs you would recommend?

Mushroomhead - solitaire unraveling
Slipknot - Eyeless
Anything by Kitty.
All of those are "Nu-Metal" though.

Sorry.
Loves: Slipknot, Mushroomhead, Cradle of Filth, Black Label Society, Dimmu Borgir, Meshuggah, Marilyn Manson, and more.
It's ok, I didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong with liking "pop" metal and there's nothing wrong with bringing it up. I also like Meshuggah and Cradle of Filth, at least some of it, as well as many others.

"Nu" ? As in the Greek letter?
No. I'm not sure exactly where it came from but I always figured it was just the word "new" spelled "nu".

Hmmm that could be debated.

It's always hard to recommend music to someone from blank, everyone's taste is so different. What songs that are metal do you already like? What are your favorite features in a song?

I would recommend Burzum or Opeth to someone unfamiliar with the genre. I haven't bought any metal CD's in a long time but I wouldn't buying God Forbid's latest album.

Do you have any particular heavy metal songs you would recommend?
Mushroomhead - solitaire unraveling
Slipknot - Eyeless
Anything by Kitty.
All of those are "Nu-Metal" though.
Downloading...
The Slipknot song sounds like Korn...maybe. What type of music is Korn's? I like "Freak On A Leash." What type of music is Rage Against The Machine's? I like "Wake Up." My favorite part of "Wake Up" is the chaos near the end (an amplitude clamping effect) that sounds like crisp static. Well, that is part of it. It also has a nifty beat at that point.
My best guess at the Nu thingie is a play on nickel's 'Ni' + 'New.'

Slipknot is more misanthropic and sounds better, but people will insult you for listening to it...fuck them.

I find that a lot of people have trouble getting into Opeth because of the long meandering songs and constant changes. It's not what most people are used to in music and can take some adjusting to. It's usually easier to adjust it based on what music they already like.

how else can you throw someone in the midst of metal? opeth is more melodic so it is easier listening.. if someone wants to get right into metal download Immolation / Mayhem and loop them. converge has a more 'mainstream' sound but is still pretty good.

So Korn is metal also? Interesting (not really.) Anyway, I don't mind misanthropy, unless it is feigned or senseless (i.e. misanthropy for the sake of misanthropy.) This is one reason I would avoid a song of whatever genre because it shows a clear lack of effort. Or a clear lack of talent.

I don't like the really heavy down tuned stuff and much prefer the stuff that's considered prog metal. Prefer it when you can listen to a band and know that they can actually play instruments, sing etc, rather than hitting the same power chord over and over (Even I can do that). Though every now and then I crave noise and will listen to something "heavier".
Listen to stuff like Symphony X and Dream Theater to understand what I'm talking about. When you see somebody like Romeo or Petrucci play you just watch and think (and I'm a guitar player)...how the f*** can they move their fingers that fast.
The "nu" is just a play on new and the current generations best efforts at misspelling everything. I tend to not like anything that's numetal.. it's boring.

Well if anyone's curious this is my list of imaginary mp3s I sometimes like to pretend I have. It's pretty representive of my tastes though I don't like all of it. Of course I don't REALLY have all these mp3s, that would be illegal. :P
This isn't my entire music collection though. I also have a few hundred cds which aren't all listed.

The few songs I have heard from Linkin Park have been good, but whoever writes their lyrics is not very talented ("I designed this rhyme to explain in due time...") Mostly the musical aspect of their songs is good.
I profess to you all to take a listen to as many different styles of music that you can. The types of music I listen to are country, rap, reggae, soul, jazz, rock, metal (and now some heavy metal ^.^,) techno, pop, videogame, vocal, classical, world, mariachi, polka, and so on for infinity. It is not for me to feel "diverse" or "sophisticated." It is all music to me, and I truly enjoy all these. Do not let classifications drive you.

* glances at your mp3 list and notices Linkin Park *
hehe, if you look closely enough at my list, you'll notice I have songs by linkin park, limp bizkit, britney spears, christina aguilera, and many others. Of course, I keep these only for research purposes.
Exactly...:D Linkin Park never actually make it to my playlist. I think my younger sibling listens to them once in a blue moon.

For HackerX, by request:
The higher pitched vocals in a lot of prog and power metal turn me off, even though I do like the instruments. This is true of prog rock too (stuff like Rush). I prefer low or even growled vocals for metal most of the time. This isn't always the case though. I do like the vocals of Rob Halford and Robert Plant, among some others. Anyway, here is some of the stuff I do like in the progressive/power metal/heavy metal genre:
Nevermore - Dead Heart in a Dead World
I'm almost surprised you don't already have them on your list, but that doesn't mean you haven't heard them. If you haven't already heard them you should definetely check them out. Check out the song "Inside Four Walls" and there's also a few slower ballad-y type songs on this album, such as "The Heart Collector" and "Believe in Nothing".
Control Denied - The Fragile Art of Existence
technical progressive metal, and a side project of Death's Chuck Schuldiner. Check out the songs "When the Link Becomes Missing" and "Consumed"
Spastic Ink - Ink Complete
as a musician into technical progressive metal, this one may interest you. It's an all instrumental album featuring guitarist Ron Jarzombek (of the prog band Watchtower). I'm not a musician but I still love it. Some songs: "To Counter And Groove In E Minor", "See, and It's Sharp!" (referring to C & C#), "The Mad Data Race"
Agalloch - The Mantle
Ok, this one isn't prog/power, but you should listen to them anyway. They somewhat remind me of Opeth. They aren't much the same musically, but more atmospherically. They have a very melodic and emotional playing style. The vocals are more black metal style, also mixed with clean vocals and acoustic music. Overall the music isn't as heavy. Anyway, listen to: "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companions" and "You Were But a Ghost in My Arms", and they also have mellow acoustic pieces like "A Desolation Song".

Well... in response... here's some stuff that I like. It generally isn't in that low growly voice category so you might not like it as much.
Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy
Easily their best album...Songs to listen to are "Of Sin And Shadows", "Sea Of Lies", (2 heavier songs) "The Accolade" (a great ballad) and "Candlelight Fantasia" which just is...
Masterplan - Self Titled
Masterplan was started by two guys kicked out of Helloween... And I think it's a good thing they did! Songs "Crystal Night", "Soulburn"
Well.. you have some Dream Theater, so you know what they're like. Still, you should listen to the "Scenes From A Memory" album.
If you like any Blind Guardian then you should look at Iced Earth, something like "Burnt Offerings", "Diary" or "My Own Saviour"

I actually have this on cd. Someone gave it to me a few years ago. I was never able to get into it. This is a good example of a band that has good instruments but the vocals bother me too much to take them seriously.

I used to have it in mp3 but I deleted it. That was way back in high school though so I may give it another shot.

I have Iced Earth self-titled, night of the stormrider, the dark saga, something wicked this way comes, alive in athens, and horror show. I like some of their songs a lot but find a lot of their material boring. They don't seem to write strong albums all the way through, imo.

Masterplan are pretty different to Helloween imo. More heavier as opposed to the helloween speed metal.
I agree that Iced Earth tend not to make complete cd's

Lately I've been enjoying Absu, Neurosis, Lightning Bolt, Isis, Comity, Pig Destroyer, Botch, Today is the Day (perhaps my favorite band), Circle takes the Square, Opeth, At the Gates, Converge, The 400 Years, Bloodbath, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Khanate, Sunn O))), Emperor, Orchid, Sleep, Acid Bath, Envy...that's lately :D
To those speaking of prog/tech (e.g. Dream Theater) I'd suggest giving Lightning Bolt "Wonderful Rainbow" a listen. It's a two piece (drums and bass), but sound unlike anything I've heard in a very positive way.

Heavy metal is good musically, but some of the vocals sound retarded in the "I'm a forty-year-old guy with a deep voice stuck in first grade, so I say creepy things to scare my fellow classmates" type of way. I would much rather they keep their mouths shut. Although, if I hear true effort in their voice, the effect is good. This seems to be rare, though. Too many of them sound like tired ogre Marxists.
The best heavy metal song I have (which I found a long time ago) is called "Track 3" by "Unknown Artist," so I don't know who they are. >_>

I don't know too much of the new or nu stuff. Like quite a few hair bands from back in the day. Tesla and Iron Maiden probably my favorites. They've both had recent albums but neither have I had any desire to purchase or hear in their entirety.
But speed metal groups like Metallica or Megadeath I just couldn't handle. I like to hear singing and to me a lot of new stuff like death metal I guess it's called with the throaty roar type of "I am Gandor lord of the underworld, buh-har-har-har-hah" vocals I cannot get at all.
My access and preference these days is mcuh more mainstream but I remember when Sony was really hyping System of a Downs and hearing about them before anyone really picked them up on radar. I was thinking at the time that they really didn't do it for me, but would've thought they would've accomplished more.

Well, I'm sitting here in an Iced Earth T-shirt, so I guess I should answer too.
I dig powermetal, classic metal, thrash, speed, NWOBHM, and stonerrock. Within those groups I can be extremely fussy about what I listen to, but I have a pretty sizable collection.
I guess I got attracted to metal because it wasn't what everyone else was listening to when I was in high school in the early 90s -- it wasn't Soundgarden, Green Day, Nirvana or Ace of Base, nor, obviously, was it country music.
Once I got into metal, though, I never let go. The genre had it all for me: aggressive songs, melancholy songs, hopeful songs, and catchy and brilliant musicianship (though, obviously, not both at the same time). There was always something, somewhere, within metal generally that could speak to my moods, and with an erratic disposition like mine, that was a very good thing.
In a way, I'm not surprised that the poll numbers have come out the way they have, since a lot of metalheads and INTPs both sort of relish the role of the outsider.

Aside from electronic music and jambands, there aren't too many other genres that make me jump around my room like an idiot on such a consistent basis :D I'm not an expert on the genre by any means, but some of the bands I've heard that I really like are:

In Flames
Dimmu Borgir
Dillinger Escape Plan (the did a GREAT album with Mike Patton)

Opeth is an excellent melodic death metal band. Particular songs I really like by them are Bleak (very hard) and To Bid you Farewell (very soft).
another death metal band I love is Acid Bath. There actually more a of a mix between doom metal, death metal. The songs I really like about them are Scream of the Butterfly (the scariest accoustic song I've heard), Graveflower, Bleed me an ocean (my favorite hard song by them).
Then Ephel Duath is another band I really like, they mix harcore metal and Jazz. There stuff reminds me of the dilinger escape plan, but there newest album The Painter's Pallete is really really good. Don't bother with the old album though, Rephormula, it kinda sucks.
Then symphony X is prolly my favorite neoclassical metal band. My favorite songs by them are Out of the Ashes and Fallen.
Then I also like alot of non-hardcore metal like Dream Theater and the new stuff from Porcupine Tree.

I must say I used to have a penchant for heavy metal.....especially Swedish power metal. In the end my ears tended to hurt afterwards....so I suddenly took the dive into ambient-trance music and am still there now :).
Then again I sometimes listen to the good old English speaking band Dragonland.....mainly because I like the way they have incorporated church organs into a few pieces ^_^

Example of pop mainstream portions:
Neoclassism/progressive: Symphony X, Fates Warning, King Crimson, Rhapsody.
Death metal: Deicide, Nocturnal Breed, Cephalic Carnage, Mortician.
Power metal: Edguy, Kamelot, Stratovarius, Falconer.
Black metal: Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Satyricon (older).
Thrash: Slayer, Sodom, Exodus, Dark Angel.
Doom: My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Crowbar, Candlemass.
So basically, bands beneath these mainstream examples. PM or post--whichever you prefer.

I love metal. It has just about everything one searches for in music, from melody to brutality, cacophony to harmony, simplicity to complexity--you get the point. I admit that I used to be quite the annoying death metal and black metal freak, and I guess to an extent I still am today, although now I'm much more open to exploring other styles of metal and genres of music.
I'm pretty sure everybody and their mothers know about this band and their kickfuckingass album, but it wouldn't hurt for me to mention them to those who don't:

Demilich, fucking, rocks.
I'm obsessed with only what I consider the best black metal/death metal which isn't all that much to tell you the truth. But Demilich is in my top 10 death metal bands for certain. Other greats for death metal: Gorguts, Morbid Angel (First 2 only), Suffocation's big three, Immolation, some more i'm forgetting for sure.
At The Gates' earlier material deserves a category all its own. The Red in the Sky is Ours and With Fear... are two of my favorite albums of all time.
My top black metal choices: Burzum, Immortal (first three), Emperor (ITNE only), Graveland, Enslaved's first few (vikingligr veldi is truly amazing), recently Averse Sefira and Demoncy from the U.S.
I am rarely open to other styles of music, because I have usually heard those styles and found them lacking. I am open to styles I have never heard before. Classical music and a few electronic/prog rock bands (tangerine dream, autechre, king crimson) are all that really appeals to me otherwise.
Do I qualify as quite the annoying death metal and black metal freak as well? ; )

My list of favourite DM bands is similar to yours, if you add Vital Remains and Vader to it (though Vader is more of a combination of DM, thrash and heavy IMO). The list of BM as well, if you add [early] Ulver (I especially enjoyed their work on Nattens Madrigal and Bergtatt).
Some other BM albums I recommend (but I can't provide any guarantee that all of them will be to your liking)...
Ondskapt - Draco Sit Mihi Dux
Odium Immortalis - Schönheit der Einsamkeit
Shining - Within Dark Chambers
Negurã Bunget - 'n Crugu Bradului

Nehëmah - Light of a Dead Star

Just listen to some Acid Bath my fine fellows.
It's flooded with dynamics. It's dark sometimes and nearly operatic at other times....often grindingly hard....and definitely morbid.
Try "Scream of the Butterfly" it's soft and "haunting"
"Bones of babydolls" another smoothie.
"Cassie eats cockroaches" well...it's got good sound.
"The Mortician's flame" I like it.
and damned near anything else from them.
Mind you, the lyrics are supremely violent. Several cases in point:
"what if I took this cigarette and put it out on you"
[guitar] chugga cha
"Would you love me?"
"She screams bloody murder as they cut off her fingers, so this is how it feels to die... [whisper] But it's ok...it's ok..."
"I met an Angel with a sawed-off shotgun, wanted by the FBI. We dropped some acid, killed our parents, then we hit the road..."
"I'd like to know how long you'd live, with a bullet in your gut. I'd like to know how much shit you'd talk if your throat was cut..."
All these are from different songs, and there is much much more.
*Note: I do not support any of the activities in the lyrics, nor am I a psycho-sadist killer. If you listen to the stuff and disregard the lyrics, the music is very very interesting and awesome.*
just listen to some of it, and tell me what ya think. I'll bet you get surprised.

metal has been a big part of my life for the last 10 years. i collected & digested everything that meant anything in metal .... & tons of redundant junk. the point is: take any genre - heavy, trash, speed, power, black, death, grind, prog, "nu"... the picture is the same. what you get is a few really original and intelligent bands and 100's of bad copies. take swedish melodic death for example: if you heard At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames and maybe Dismember you heard it all. not to mention power or black... so don't be hard on nu metal. considering the music/redundant junk ratio nu metal beats both....

True, but doesn't that sort of thing apply to every single music genre there is? Plus, lack of originality doesn't necessarily result in making music bland or horrid. Of course originality is a welcomed trait in the music I listen to, but its absence does not prohibit me from enjoying certain bands.

I agree. Isn't that why people get multiple albums from the same band? Because they like their style and want to hear something similar? I don't see why that's so different from getting albums in a similar style from different bands.
I think the staleness and lack of anything "new" happening in metal is exaggerated. Looking at it from a larger scale, metal as it is known today is still a young genre, not much older than myself. Many of those great innovative albums metalheads like to speak of like they happened so long ago were only released a few years ago. There is a very wide range of styles within the metal genre since it came into existence. Has it really developed any slower than other genres?

And actually, I don't mind bands like Korn and Slipknot or even Linkin' Park. It seems to me like a lot of people hate them simply because they are popular and "mainstream", but that's just as silly as only listening to songs that are in the charts in my opinion.

What most annoys me about nu metal is when their 'fans' spell them linken/lincoln park or limp biscuit. It's like they're 43yr old paedophiles/pedophiles pretending to be cool and hip.
I also think those who visit this are unlikely to visit this post just to say they don't like it, unless they're bored and have nothing else to do, or really disike heavy metal and so wish to tell people.
Plus I don't think it's right to say I dislike a whole genre of music, since I haven't heard 99% of it. I suppose I dislike the imagery/design commonly used by such bands.

I hate that goddamned stereotype (listening to metal = you're a pervert). I'm also not crazy about some of the imagery used by some metal bands.
Just bought a Shadows Fall CD. They're OK but a bit overrated I think (cookie cutter nu-metal with the occasional awesome solo).

Since I'm to be posting on intpcentral more often, this thread requires resurrection since it was about the only thread I ever posted in.
First things first, Jez dear, I have got to thank you for getting me onto Agalloch. Hell, I didn't even realise it was you who did it, it was so long ago. But I'm still listening to them. I should probably send you flowers or chocolates or something as thanks...
From this I've moved into darker places. Here's what is being played by myself at the moment:
Agalloch
Anathema
Arcturus
Burzum
Drudkh
My Dying Bride
Sonata Arctica
Symphony X
Ulver (old school)
Plus plenty of other random songs in between
Rarely do we get half decent bands over here, so this makes it all the more awesome:

I just said that to piss off homophobic heavy metal fans. Someone tried to stab me once in the 7th grade because I told them that the lead singer of Judas Priest was gay.
I know it means the devil, but can you tell me why you guys personally do it?
Ok, I do love Motorhead and like Metallica (and Led Zepplin if you count that as heavy metal); so I don't think the entire genre sucks. Other exceptions are AC/DC and probably 3 or 4 more groups I can't recall now.

Not all metal listeners do that (me, for example), but it's an interesting question. I was curious where it came from too, so I looked it up:
The corna (Italian for horns, also mano cornuta, horned hand) is a gesture with a vulgar meaning in Mediterranean countries and a variety of meanings and uses in other cultures. Its origins can be traced to Ancient Greece. It is realized by extending the index and little fingers while holding the middle and ring fingers down with the thumb. . .
Gene Simmons claimed to have first introduced the sign to heavy metal, when he was shown extending his little finger on the cover of KISS' 1977 album Love Gun, although his claim is disputed: "A casual glance at this [album] cover would suggest he is correct. However, there are two points of contention that refute this. First of all, he is holding it [his hand] to his side, jutting from his hip ... Secondly, and most importantly, he isn't really making the sign! We have enlarged the section of the artwork ... to show that his thumb isn't covering his middle two fingers but resting at the side of his index finger." On the other hand Gene Simmons has, even before the Love Gun LP, showed this sign on stage or during photo sessions (for example Japan, April 1977). Gene was inspired by 60's Marvel comics, especially Dr Strange and also Spider-Man.
In heavy metal music, Ronnie James Dio also used this sign. His Italian grandmother used it to ward off the evil eye (malocchio). Dio began using the sign soon after joining (1979) the metal band Black Sabbath. The previous singer in the band, Ozzy Osbourne, was rather well known at using the "peace" sign at concerts, raising the index and middle finger in the form of a V. Dio, in an attempt to connect with the fans in a similar manner to Ozzy, wanted to use a similar hand gesture. However, not wanting to copy Osbourne, he chose to use the sign his grandmother always made. Both accounts are predated by the Chicago based psychedelic-Goth band Coven, lead by singer Jinx Dawson who made the gesture on their 1969 album cover for "Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls", incidentally, the band also wrote a song called "Black Sabbath" and one of the band members was named Oz Osborne, not to be confused with Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath fame. This is a much truer origin of the hand sign and of the seeds of Heavy Metal.
Pre-dating either Ronnie James Dio, or Gene Simmons' use of the "devil's hand", on the cover of the Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine' album (Dec 1968, UK, Jan 1969, USA), John Lennon's right hand is making the sign above Paul McCartney's head. For many fans, this was one of the many "Paul is dead" clues. If anyone actually cares to read more than that, check out the wikipedia page I pasted it from. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corna)
Someone tried to stab me once in the 7th grade because I told them that the lead singer of Judas Priest was gay.
Why get angry about that? He is gay...

Why do people use any sort of physical symbols or gestures? Because they convey some sort of meaning. It's called "communication." The heavy metal fingers mean "fuck yeah, this rocks." I generally only use them at shows, and pretty sparingly at that. They are a bit cheesy. But so are a lot of other things.

It's silly to argue about subjective topics like which taste in music is superior. At the very least if you're going to do it, take some time to figure out what most of the people in the thread are actually talking about. In a shock development, Avantgarde metallers Arcturus have decided to disband after a highly successful tour of Australia.
Local tour promoters Just Say Rock Productions broke the news to patrons of the concerts via e-Mail, stating their reasons: "The band just thought that the time was right, the moment had come and that due to their tour of Australia being so successful they wanted to go out on top...[Arcturus believed] their [recent] Australian tour was one of their greatest highlights and they rated their Melbourne show as one of their all time memorable all round events."
Bravewords.com reported that, in response to a question asked by Australian fan Vanessa at the band's MySpace page, Arcturus drummer Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg (Dimmu Borgir, Mayhem) responded with the following:
"Yes we are splitting up, there is no more time for all of us, as everyone is extremely busy. But there have been some killer 16 years or so :-)
See you next time with Mayhem or Dimmu, and those bands are not likely to split up any time soon ;-) ."
Another fan post on the page reads: "Vortex (vocalist Simen "Vortex" Hestnæs) announced that the Melbourne show was their last, I spent alot of time talking to all members of the band and they all gave me the impression that they were somewhat relieved it was coming to an end. I feel totally

However, what I do like are bands that can carry a good tune instead of just trying to be loud and fast. Also, I like it when the people can actually sing, instead of just growling. Unfortunately, that tends to rule out a lot of metal it seems.
Ooh, wait a minute, I do have an example. I'm just guessing that this counts as metal, but a perfect example of what I like is Rammstein.

Really hardcore death metal where it sounds like the vocalist is about to spew his guts out always puts a smile on my face.

I'm all for thrash vocals in the vein of Hetfield/Motorhead... and some Robert Plant type stuff. That seems to fit metal well. Growling doesn't bother me too much, but I don't find it necessary. The "croaking" in black metal is just unbearable though.

If all your listening to is the vocals, then (at least for a lot of the metal I listen to) you're missing a lot of the music.
Speaking of which, I'm listening to a black metal band called Drudkh, anybody else here heard/a fan?

I like to do the exact opposite. Most of the stuff I listen to is about dragons, magic, monsters, mythology, robots, or a combination of any number of these subjects.

I know it has been a few months but I'm slow and just checked these albums off my list this week...
Try Epitaph. I never liked Onset much either, for more reasons than one... but Epitaph was written almost a whole decade after, and it's a MONSTER of an album. If you like Martyr, I'm sure you'll dig it to an extent.
I agree that it's much better than Onset. Still, there's just something about it that isn't catching me. I listened to the whole album, and I did find parts of the songs interesting. But that was just it, I was only finding parts interesting while feeling bored with most of it. Unfortunately, I wasn't finding those parts so interesting that it felt worthwhile going back to listen to the entire song for them.
Do you play any instruments, and do you think it affects enjoyment of technical metal much? Most of the people I've known who listen to this type of music do. I don't have that going for me, so I don't know, maybe there's something there I'm missing?
Yep. BTA is an experimental tech metal band of sorts, and even if you don't end up liking it so much, you'll get a kick out of it for being so out there.
I listened to cyborg summoning. You're right, it was weird because it fused so many styles together, but the parts reminded me of other bands I'm familiar with. It was interesting to listen to and I liked the first track the most.

Hi, I like Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold, am I a metalhead? Can I be all elitist and paint my face white now?
Seriously though, yeah, metal is good stuff. I mainly like Dragonforce, Blind Guardian, Megadeth (founded by Dave Mustaine when he got kicked out of Metallica for being too metal), etc.

Yeah, I play. I don't think it affects enjoyment.. not directly, anyway. Being a musician you tend to pay more attention to certain aspects of the playing to pick up on some things, if not just marvel at it.. I guess focusing on the details makes it more interesting, otherwise it can sound like a mess. In truth, most bands like these don't have so much variety in their songs, just alot of rhythmic displacement and change in time signature which I dig alot. Even mediocre songs tend to have "cool" moments.
There is one band like this I absolutely cannot stand, and that's Beneath the Massacre. Sweep-sweep-sweep-sweep-sweep-sweep-sweep-sweep. I read an interview once asking why they play the way they do... they just get bored apparently.
Another thing about death metal is that the production tends to be very very flat and compressed, even more so than that of mainstream bands. It sounds terrible.. part of the "loudness" wars these days. There are no accoustics whatsoever, they might as well be plugging their guitars straight into the computers. On top of that, with all the single-note playing there is a major lack in harmony, and the vocals don't help in that department either. It's rare to find bands that understand this.

I like the way you explained that.
I ask because I hear a lot of "that's so hard to play...wow, I wish I could do that" type comments about technical metal. For me, I couldn't care less how difficult it is to play and don't think music has to be difficult to play to be pleasing to the ear.

I listened to a Beneath the Massacre album last night and I think I get what you mean. It's a great example of the type of death metal I don't like and just don't get. It has that cold emotionless barrage of notes that doesn't seem to go anywhere, it sounded like there were only a few distinct riffs and the whole album was just variations of those. It's awful.... ugh, I hated the drums too.
I can hear a big difference between their style and Necrophagist though. I listened to Epitaph again and while it might partially be due to relief after hearing a band that really outdid them on being sterile metal, it was a lot more interesting the second time around. I think I like Diminished to Be the most at this point, a few other songs are standing out more, and the rest isn't that bad either. I'm on the fence with my opinion on this one, though I'll say I don't completely dislike it and it's better than I thought it was. It may still grow on me.

I mostly agree and what a lot of people don't get is that I'm not listening to metal because it's "loud, fast and angry" music. I don't really like that association or have that image of myself. I'm always looking for harmony and interesting patterns in the music, though I don't always understand why I like what I do.

Hmm, does Chevelle count these days? I've always liked their music. As for metal / industrial, I bought a Norma Jean CD a long time ago and every once in awhile I'll listen through it. It's mostly screaming into the mic, but it has this strange undercurrent of melody with the guitars on some songs.

I'm a huge Sepultura fan. Their latest album, Dante XXI, is really cool. The lyrics could be better, but the music is just so darn good.
Soulfly is excellent when Max doesn't get too retarded, but sometimes the retarding aspects of his lyrics are endearing.
Other than that I don't really listen to metal. I like hardcore and industrial more. NAILBOMB, Big Black, Rammstein, Shai Hulud, Bailter Space, The Locust, Blood Brothers, Earth Crisis, Emok, Primus, Flipper...noisy stuff that kills brain cells.

If you don't like Derrick's vocals you may not like it. However, many people who dislike the other albums with Derrick enjoy Dante XXI. But let's see...
"Convicted in Life" was the lead single. It has a really cool video. You can find it on youtube.
"Dark Wood of Error"
"Crown and Miter"
"False"
"City of Dis"
"Nuclear Seven"
All of them.

Morbid Visions is too premature but still interesting.
Arise is starting to lose it's vigor and become pop music, but still is decent. Everything after that, pretty horrible.

I like some heavy/extreme metal though it's not my favorite genre , a few bands I like are
Tool
Meshuggah
Earthtone 9 -progressive metal from the UK , now defunct. Check them out though if you like Tool or Meshuggah.
Akercocke - preety much the only black metal I like apart from maybe a bit of dimmu borgir, I think they have a good sense of atmosphere and a heathly sense of experimentation in their music
Slayer - Can't beat a bit of slayer now and again
there the extreme metal bands I listen to the most i'd say. I tend to be more of an electronica and indie rock bod but I try and keep up with whats going on in metal too.

LADY FRONTED! LIVE SHOW!
I'm such a tease ;)
Walk the Path of Ash (lyrics)
Separate and iminish
Dress with a new shell
Vanish deep, walking in sleep
Shun those who let their love show
In this defense, a selfish plea
For you to live and maybe see
If you are a riddle that tricks then plagues with rust
I'll go unnoticed like the dust
Walk the path of ash, return to insanity
Walk the trap
It is more wretched than the usual prey
who take and fake with no merit, no trace
Gone is the one, our faces seep
We have not won, ashamed to weep
This is the toll, the broken gate
A wreath to lay on the grave of faith
They came through Portland this winter, awesome show.
I am definitely a metal enthusiast with a pretty wide range of interests, but my favourite new discovery is Krallice (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=324911012).

You're lucky you included a pale turquoise disclaimer. Nothing angries up my blood more than Studioforce (lie, but for now I'm focusing my hate onto one target for the sake of rant-ument). If you're going to use an editing system to make a bunch of ultra-fast sounds you can't even begin to reproduce live, you might as well just abandon the illusion of using a guitar altogether and make techno beats or whatever.
