View Full Version : Are Posters with attractive human avatars more likely to be physically attractive?

Are we maintaining gender association here?

In other words, specific example: male poster, attractive female avatar.

Also, do you consider Ronald McDonald attractive?

This is, of course, when the avatar is not them.

This begs the question: What makes an avatar attractive? and What's an attractive avatar?

It's pretty self-explanatory with some of the female ones such as digest or andantino. On the other hand, most males don't use a picture or drawing of another guy as their avatar. Limey and Fripping are some exceptions.

Yes, let's keep the genders constant.

only males + male avatar

or

female + female avatar

Although male attractiveness is generally seen as more subjective, I've seen a few male celeb avatars that could are probably considered "attractive" by the large majority of females.

And No, Ronald McDonald won't be considered attractive. He's no sex object.

I doubt it... but I think having an attractive avatar effects the way people respond to the poster. I choose mine to suit my mood. It's like choosing what to wear.

I have noticed that some posters from the What We Look Like thread bear an uncanny resemblance to their avatars.

How would you rate the world's oceans by sexiness?

For me it would be, in descending order of sexiness:

1. Arctic
2. Indian
3. Pacific
4. Atlantic
5. Southern

Denzien
2 Jul 2008, 10:51 PM
The answer is probably very similar to the raw probability of a poster being attractive at all, regardless of avatar.

So then, ask yourself one question: Are people who post on Internet forums generally very attractive people?

In my long experience of teh internets and despite marrying someone I met on the internets, I would say that people with attractive avatars are more likely to be unattractive.
I find avatar selection to be somewhat amusing and chose my own, solely based on how much effervescent "fizz" occurs in my head by shapes, colors and even more obscure references.

EDIT: also, the boy in my avatar reminded me of myself at around age 13;

Perhaps posters who choose attractive human avatars tend to be more aware of appearance - value it more on average? Creating that particular online image could be motivated by a desire for familiarity with real-life image and self-identity, or it could be a opportunity to experience what you cannot irl.

This is kinda hi-jacking, but the girls comments got me thinking about my own feelings about appearance. For me it is a very off or very on thing. Day to day I wear what-ever in close and not smelly, and will only brush my hair/shave for special occasions.

Now-a-days, I live in what is I guess the most trendy part of town. It is like the local version of South Beach in Miami. Going to the grocery is a surreal experiance. Everyone there is in perfectly disheveled clothing. I am never sure if I am in Publix (http://www.publix.com/) or a stumbled into a Dsquared2 (http://www.dsquared.com/)runway show. Part of me feels really outta place, and weird. I like to blend in places, even when I travel overseas (as much as I can). Then a bigger part just rebels and is revolted by the idea of be compeled into playing dress-up to buy an f-ing can of tuna fish!

There are also other parameters besides attractiveness. I wanted an avatar that was a female silhouette of acceptable size. The bond girl appealed to me and presto! I see some very hideous and offensive avatars from people who in their posts strive to be hideous and offensive. What is more interesting is when "nice" 'net personas have offensive avatars.

I basically just choose the ones I do because I have admired them in their craft at some point. Someone in music, books, films, or on a video and also see them as a bit of me.

Example, Avril was me when i was 13-22 --butch-kid, tomboy, kind of sexy but totally unaware and didn't matter. I also related to thinkers and still do. i.e., females who can think and are fairly intense at times. . .about things that matter, or people who don't, but are just totally irritating or if someone needed desperately to be told off.

I was and am her, so that's how I pick avatars. Don't care if they are attractive. They are for me. [now, damn, where is my old Avril avatar? .. that's the one I look most like and who cares? i like looking like me]

Your mob instincts are really amazing. Are you an introvert because someone asked you an aggressive question when you were young? Seems like now you'd rather wait in the shadows for the group to gang up on someone than participate in anything as a self owning person.

The question is: Are women with attractive avatars attractive.

The thread we're in now asks if posters with attractive avatars are likely to be attractive.

Yours: "WTF is with all the hot chicks!?", followed by some pretty bad e-flirting, and a decent argument asserting that you're a male chauvanist.

Then, in this one, you again limit it only to women, and insinuate that attractive women use attractive avatars.

Your bombardment of the topic kind of begs for an explanation, and I have vague, generalized ideas about where it's coming from.

I mean, there must be a reason, right?

It's also an extroverted noob's error to assume that we're all friends around here, just because we can all agree to hate an annoying jackass.

Ask your Comrade Karl for the list. Im not joking. He has aftermarket add on software which allows him to shield his tender eyes from the ill effects of lascivious feminine avatars. So Im guessing that it shouldn't be much trouble for him to print out which posters he has had to block from view. Once a list of of the perpetrators is produced then the committee can move forward to making a ruling on the issue and recommending disciplinary action.

1. Adblock blocks the image url. For avatars, that's a number. It may be your account number, but I'm not sure. If you wanted me to print out a list of account numbers, that'd be fine. I currently have five numbers. It's possible that once upon a time I had another number on a different computer.

2. I have never seen Madrigal's alleged fishnet avatar, and thus cannot render judgment onto her, with a disciplinary counsel or otherwise.

Im kinda confused about what you are saying. ( I actually am not getting the gist of your statement)

In fact Im just confused!!

I'm confused as to why anybody would try to make a correlation between real world attractiveness and using an attractive avatar.

If there was a correlation, then Im confused as to why anyone would care. What effect would it have on our lives.

Im confused as to why our resident ENTJ disgruntled penis gets a woody everytime he sees an AVATAR which represents a female.

Im confused as to why Karl feels so distracted by feminine avatars that he has to use a program to block them out.

Im confused about the mention of these green fishnets. I only vaguely recall ever seeing a picture of Madrigal/Dorothy and I think she was wearing a turtleneck sweater.

Im confused as to why people think that this particular forum is more overtly sexualized than any other forum. I rarely gain any erotic lust out of any of the 100X300 pixel miniature representations on this forum(save the one that white Raven used to have, WR you could bring that back if you want) If I was hard pressed for an answer I would probably say that pornography is ultimately harmful, although I admit to having seen my fair share, but nothing in the avatars on this forum even remotely approaches pornography.

There is one thing that I am not that confused about:

I wanna see this picture of the Green fishnets!!!

(Oh and Attila can flash that boobie shot again if she wants, I think my copy got erased)

Not trying to cut in on yur confusion or anything, Stoph. Not sure what the premise was either. Since I love to push the psychological analysis to the extreme at times [when I'm pretending I'm a big bad entj that is, even when it really doesn't matter so much] I think there could be a teensy tiny insight Charmander wanted to brew. Maybe.

Anyway. I think of avatars like a costume party sort of. Also like a wall hanging. They sure do help break up the monotony of looking at type. Especially since we are SOO picky that anyone shuld dare use a different font omfg! or use color or whatever. The intp addiction to boredom perhaps.

So anyway, maybe if there actually were, as Charmander entp suggested, more wide variety of sexualized avatars here, I say IF. Maybe that is due to the fact that intp's tend to downplay their looks IRL. I certainly do lean toward the subtle as opposed to the flamboyant.

So just saying, maybe the fact we are so NOT extrovertedly sexual unless we're just kidding around on the internets OR we're really serious about it, makes it a bit more fun to 'dress up' sometimes. And the fact intp's can be so deadly fucking serious way more than most, makes it tempting in this venue to play at NOT being so much.

Dressing up as Cyndi Lauper for Halloween dance once was really one of the best times I ever had, at an ugh, dance. Trying to give an example, lame though it may be.

Oh, hell I forgot the fishnets almost. I totally DO want to see those things. I have never seen green fishntets yet. Of course other girls have those. I just would never have thought of it, or even to look. I wonder if it's true?

Well, I didn't for a long time, but then I thought, "What the hell? If I don't like it, why should I have to look at it?" If I want to pornography I'll turn on the television. There's not really any reason for you to believe me, but by and large it wasn't distracting. (Edit: I mean, it's not like I've blocked everyone with a woman out. Hermoine is good. Pirate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5B3LRxXnjI)woman is good.)

If I was hard pressed for an answer I would probably say that pornography is ultimately harmful, although I admit to having seen my fair share, but nothing in the avatars on this forum even remotely approaches pornography.

Depends on how you define it, which could be a whole topic in itself, I suppose...

Im with you Karl

Lets see these alleged fishnets and render up a judgement.

Er, that's not exactly what I was getting at...

Dont sweat it Karl. You're right. There isnt really much reason in this life not to remove annoyances if we have the power. Dont feel singled out just because you offered up your take on the subject. The whole thing just seems like kind of a non issue to me.

Haha, excellent video.

Ok, to say something of slightly more substance, I am with stopharian and Hermione on this. It's just images with no correlation at all with anybody's real-world looks and, personally, I haven't noticed any overly-sexualised avatar.
Of course, ad-block is a great tool to block pictures that can be annoying or distracting, I use it a lot myself cause I can't stand any gif-animated banner.

BTW, what's with all those username changes?

Thanks for showing us your fishnets The avatar is very cute. Something about it though makes you look like a character from Tron. :theclap:

What qualifies as "overly"? Do you want me to look up the 5 I have blocked and show you? I don't even remember what most of them are anymore.

Also, I've only had 2, and I think some people didn't notice the first one and thought I was a new person.

This should be the last one. I'm not normally one for username changes but I wanted a name different than the one I usually use.

This is an important question, considering the amount of effort it takes to properly stalk someone. Will the payoff be worth it?

You're both total stalking n00bs. True stalkers aren't in it for the rewards, they're in it for the creepiness factor.

Actually, never mind, MacGuffin is a stalking pro.

Nah, you shouldn't. Ad-block exists for blocking annoying images out of your view. Actually, a bit after reading this thread in the morning and posting here, I tried to read another thread full of embedded videos and my browser crashed. I tried second time, the browser crashed again so, I stole the idea and ad-blocked all the embedded videos. If I want to watch them, I can just visit the link to YouTube.
It's fine to be able to stop things of annoying you, seriously.

By overly I mean images of naked people or people clearly in a sexual situation.
Of course maybe there are some around and I haven't noticed.

Yeah, it was not directed only to you, it's just that the last few weeks a lot of posters suddenly decided to change their usernames (Worksid, the girl with the porn name, etc) and I just noticed that you've changed username too.

Actually, you're right - one Freudian psychologist I knew told me that not seeking to consummate, but just getting off on an act that doesn't reach that point, is a "perversion". She also says that treatment is useless on perverts because they are happy to be the way they are.

Interesting. If you think about it...

How would a stalker respond to being stalked? Do you think they'd feel like they were finally getting reciprocation and that somebody "understood" them, or would they be just as freaked out as anyone else?

I think they're looking for the rewards that come from intimacy without knowing how to take small steps towards it, or realising... eh, this is complicated.

They need to get laid.

Oh, well, Madrigal and Miss Lovelace lead me to do it, actually, although I had been considering it for a while in a typical noncomitted fashion. I took the idea from Miss Lovelace and the name from Madrigal. So that explains one of them, I guess. (is this topic really less chatty than the other porn-avatar topic?)
