You're quite right, that's what my mother once said. I found it mildly amusing and kind of idiotic. And my father always made all sorts of disparaging comments about every other race, convinced that everyone else was "stupid".

And Chinese is just a blanket term for Hokkiens, Teochews, Shanghainese, Cantonese etc. etc., not to mention the non-Han races. All of which have some degree of animosity towards each other, rather like the pride Europeans might have in their own countries. They don't even speak the same language (even though it's written with the same words). Even the grammar's different.

I remember a time when I was a kid. My mother and I walked by an Indian food stall and she told me in Cantonese, look at that big black Indian man, he'll catch you if you're naughty, and that chap stared at her, then bade her Good Morning in Cantonese. The stupefied look on her face was priceless.

Don't know if the ban is true or not but perhaps you guys should wait to find out before you make any assumptions. That said, I am chinese, and we are racist. Dont' get your panties all up in a bunch. We haven't had the years of "enlightened" politicallyi correct social education programs like you Americans have had. Chinese just have a long-standing dislike/fear of black people, its ingrained in the culture. If you grew up Chinese in the culture you would be the same way.

Agree, the way words have multiple meanings lends a fluidity of thinking that makes for interesting ideas. Greek and German both achieve this in different ways, and it's related to them and China having somewhat overachieved when producing philosophers. Heidegger gave some interesting lectures on this.

Funnily enough I was talking about the Schism today with my new Greek employee. A very important event, the effects of which have yet to completely reach their conclusion.

Well Runciman's thesis is that the Schism was not simply an event that occurred in 1054 (the cardinal had no right to excommunicate, and the patriach did not excommunicate the entire Western chuch) - but rather it was a very long split with origins going back to the 5th century, bolstered by the turmoil of Photius' 'heresy', the problems of the 11th century and the final blow that was the fourth crusade fiasco (the fourth crusade is itself a fascinating topic).

I think the lack of a simple phonetic alphabet greatly reduced the impact of one of their greatest inventions - the printing press. A printing press with over 5,000 complicated characters is a real pain in the ass.

Isn't this kind of discrimination against blacks common in Japan and South Korea too- at least outside of the capitals?

As for Mongolians, that's a curious thing that has to come from the history of taught hatred against them. The Japanese used Mongolians as workers and in civil service in China during their occupation, and were effectively allies; and of course there were the endless invasions centuries before. I wonder if they added in Mongolians in order to be more politically correct?

There are only 3 million of them in the world, and in a country larger than Texas, and it's seriously rare to meet one, even in China. I knew a girl (first name: DOLGOR) from Mongolia for about a year and she was pretty aggressive I must say, but I cannot generalize from one sample.

but that's jealousy, not fear. Chinese (and perhaps asian people in general) have had little to no exposure to black people, black culture, etc. All they know is what they've seen depicted on American TV. So, draw your own conclusions from that.
