I was just wondering, because my laptop freeze for a few seconds now and then, that it might be because of the fact that I have 46 process running at the same time.
As I went into my task manager, I aslo saw that some of them runs 2-3 times for different services, for example, I have this svchost.exe that runs I think 4 times. Now I know that it is usually a useful program that controls de different DLL, but...4 times ???
Anyway, can anyone help me with that in shutting the unuseful ones in order to maximize my computer performance ?
Thanks :D

There is a pretty good site listing Windows Processes at
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/system/
It will tell you what they do, which are necessary, and which are not.

What OS are you running ?
I don't know anything about XP, but in previous Windows you run MSCONFIG, and can untick the processes in the Startup tab. ( Except for Systray and Rundll; and I'm not sure about Scanregw & Taskmon... Ask an expert. Anyway you could identify the little bastard programs that insist* on putting themselves in to start up, and untick them one at a time if you're cautious. )

Most processes should be sleeping most of the time. It could be that when they are scheduled to run, the OS must swap in (from disk) its memory pages. Check your memory usage. Defragment your partition(s).
One thing you'd want to check is whether your swap file is fragmented, since it will increase swapping times. You'd like to lock its size so it doesn't expand into newly fragmentated areas.

Perfectly normal. Follow Nighthawk's advice.

I run on XP Pro and already went into the startup list to uncheck some of the unuseful ones (for example, webcams ones).
Thanks a lot for the answers !
