I checked my public-facing email today, and I noticed I was getting a LOT less spam than normal. Usually I get a few hundred spam emails a day. It's fallen way off recently. Then I saw this story:

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/11/georgia-takes-a-beating-in-the-cyberwar-with-russia/

They point out that cyberwarfare can be very costly for a target country, and these sort of attacks are quite inexpensive to finance. They said that Russia could fund an entire cyber-campaign for about the same price as changing the treads on one tank. It's not the first time they've done something like this.

Here's a lecture about what the Estonian I.S. team learned during the first Russian cyberattack. The guy giving the lecture is Gadi Evron. I liked his talk. It was the first time I'd really heard much about this topic.

So I guess all the Russian spambots are too busy beating up Georgia to try to sell us V1@gra. :)
