So after the loooong wait, Obama finally picks Joe Biden as his VP. He seems to be a safe pick - he's got strong foreign policy credentials, lengthy Washington experience, and has appeal to working-class voters. But is he enough to get Obama elected? Do you think Obama made the right choice? Recent reports show that McCain and Obama are neck and neck and a lot of Clinton supporters are still undecided if they will vote for Obama.
Thoughts?

Good pick. Very likable guy, relates to normal folk better, foreign policy credentials...
And about the polls, yes they are neck and neck with Obama barely leading, but when you break it down state by state and look at it electorally, Obama has a healthy lead.

Another big plus is that Biden is perceived an as an open and candid person, more so than Obama and much more than McCain.
I think this round people will be looking for a P and VP who won't hold secrets and will be candid.

I think that's a good point. I think its really Obama's game to lose. Biden seems to be well vetted. I don't believe he has any skeletons in the closet (...no John Edwards storyline here...) I'm just somewhat surprised that with all of Obama's talk of 'change,' he chose someone very safe and a Washington old-timer at that. Some pundits are saying that Obama needs someone that is a game-changer....several folks are thinking that his campaign is under-performing. I am not sure if 'safe' is good enough right now.

Biden's been in government for a long time, but he's not really a classic Washington insider. He doesn't even live in D.C. and he is the least wealthy person in the Senate, or close to it.

He does look pretty old, I gotta say. I still can only imagine what it would've been like with Hillary as VP. Sadly, she'd probably still be in control, completely steam-rolling Obama.
On a side note - what do you guys think her MBTI type is?

Obama *is* half white. But I understand your point. As a multi-racial person, this really irks me - how society imposes one's racial identity. For another time....

Its actually happens very often in political speeches. It's called 'leveraging thought leadership.' But hey, Obama could help out Biden on writing speeches while Biden could help Obama out on foreign policy (they could be like study buddies). I'm not sure who will be in charge of the economy though....

If you look at barack's website, he actually has some very viable plans/programs that he will put in place when he is elected for office. Of course, you don't hear anything about that from the media because they're too busy worrying about how the democrats would be faring if Hillary had the nomination instead of Obama... :banghead:

Maybe so, but he said the best sound bite of the primary campaign:
"Rudy Giuliani. There's only three things he mentions in a sentence -- a noun, a verb, and 9/11."
Now he can recycle it for John McCain and replace 9/11 with POW.

I think he's a rather apt choice. Of course, he wasn't my first choice, but I think he would fare well. He's quite charismatic, similar in speaking styles to Obama and generally makes a great first impression.

By choosing Joe Biden as their vice presidential candidate, the Democrats have selected a politician with a mixed record on technology who has spent most of his Senate career allied with the FBI and copyright holders, who ranks toward the bottom of CNET's Technology Voters' Guide, and whose anti-privacy legislation was actually responsible for the creation of PGP.

Extremely disappointed that Biden got the VP nod. I don't understand the praise being lavished on him by the first several posters one bit.
"I am a Zionist. You don't have to be a Jew to be a Zionist."
I mean fuck... Iran, ready or not, here we come...

Sucks, but most US politicans would call themselves Zionists too, if they weren't afraid of the soundbite police. The American government is Zionist, regardless of which party is in office.

Wesley Clark. He has the most appeal to folks who are concerned about the US being "soft" on military issues. McCain wouldn't be able to use his military service in an attempt to play the patriotism card, which Bush did very effectively in previous elections.
Clark was 1st in his class at West Point, Rhodes Scholar, former General, Bronze and Silver Stars, shot 4 times in combat. Gun-toting rednecks in Texas and Georgia, would love this guy. If he ever had to debate the right on military issues, he would clown them easily.
Biden could alienate some of the dissatisfied Bush voters, the Dems need to convert; who might view him as too elite and upper crust. Bush had appeal, because of his everydayness - the dumb goofy fratboy, everyone can understand.

I dunno, I always thought Clark had an elite vibe to him as well. He was a freakin' general. And he comes off as smart and articulate, which is hardly what the anti-intellectual retards out there are looking for. They want dumb, simple, aggressive catchphrases like "drill here, drill now."

QFT- The funny (or sad thing) is that the American people previously voted (twice!) for a guy who they felt they could have a beer with....a simple, everyday man....a man of "values".....and look where it got us... :stupid: What are "values" if you can't feed your kids? <_<
And when did eloquence and intelligence become disqualifiers for the positions of American president and VP? Are we that insecure or stupid as a nation? Maybe we should elect our next president American Idol-style

This can lead to unnecessary hurdles, considering that Obama says he's open to talking out differences between feuding countries versus acting unilaterally.
Biden gave off some good vibes in his speech, though.
Meh.
I still like them as a team better than McCain's group, and that seems to be the bottom line.

We elected Bush didn't we? Obama is considered elite by many because he's articulate and taught an ivy league education (even if he wasn't born with silver spoon). Bush who actually was an elite, who inherited everything, didn't get the eilte handicap, exactly because he's not articulate. The only democrats who ever won the Presidency, except JFK, were always from the South. The southern accent (which is less refined) gives them the air, to not come off as upper crust and out of touch that is necessary to win swing states and rednecks throughout the south and midwest.
Not sure how true this is (but I wouldn't put it past the neo-con white house). Putin claims the Bush administration orchestrated the conflict in Georgia to help the Republicans in the coming race, because they know the atmosphere of military conflict always works in favor of the republicans. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7586605.stm
The perceived strength on national security issues for the right is infuriating considering the entire cabinet didn't serve, McCain is the only hawk who actually has military service. I think Clark could take this advantage away (though Biden might actually make a better VP). If there was no 9/11, the Bush white house would not have won a second term.

good point... :sadbanana: I foresee a change of paradigm in the near future though - with ideologies and "values" increasingly converging and becoming convoluted with the evolving demographic changes.
