View Full Version : Monthly Trivia Night (Casino Cash Prizes)

PenguinHunter
8 Oct 2008, 08:00 AM
I'm attempting to introduce a monthly trivia competition to INTPCentral. The format will be similar to the scavenger hunt thread (http://forums.intpcentral.com/showthread.php?t=30902)s I created before but this time I've been promised Casino sponsorship by MacGuffin. There will be at least $10,000 available on the opening night. The rules are the same: just post your answers and the first post with the correct answer wins the money.

There will be 9 categories of 5 questions and a final easy 10 question speed round. Each question will be worth $200 (except in the last round which will be $100) and you get to keep all the money you make, IF you finish in the top 10 in the standings.

I'll post the questions for this month on October 15th between 5 and 6am GMT or 12-1am Eastern Time. They will appear at the end of this post.

I know the times suck but I live in the UAE so a nice 7pm start would be 3am for me. This gives the South-East Asians and Australians a bit of an advantage but not much I can do about that. We'll do the next one at a different time.

Questions (Money Available):

Round 1) History of Phrases

1) "I'm jonesing for a cigarette." Who was Jones?

2) "I got caught jaywalking." Who were the jays?

3) Why would you wish someone a broken leg if you want them to do well?

4) "Don't let the cat out of the bag." Who first put the cat in the bag?

5) "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle." What sort of people first made this remark?

Round 2) Strange Psychology

6) I take 10 hostages. After about a week locked up in my fortified apartment I feel so sorry for my captives that I begin to release the hostages without demanding anything.

What condition have I developed over the past week?

7) Over the past few days I have begun to believe that a single devious person is disguising themselves as many different members of my friends and family. To what end I don't know but it's beginning to cause distress!

What condition have I developed?

8) I sincerely believe that I'm a zombie. I am dead and decaying but also miraculously still able to wander about.

What condition have I developed?

9) I'm reading my Economist magazine with my back to you. You sneak up behind me and shout "BOO!" Rather than simply looking startled, I literally jump out of my seat (perhaps two or more feet off the ground), yelp loudly and uncontrollably flail as I flee from the from the room.

Another symptom is that I will uncontrollably obey any order given to me in a loud, authoritative way. For example: Some says loudly, "Punch your friend!" I obey without thinking even though I may feel immediate guilt afterward.

What condition do I have?

10) In the past week I have eaten 2 marbles, a pencil broken into several pieces, 4 nickels, a dozen buttons and a bicycle chain.

What condition have I developed?

Round 3) Soundtracks - Title and Artist

11) What famous song is sung by Jennifer Connelly in the jazz club in Dark City.

12) In the scene where the fax machine is "taken out" in Office Space, what is the track title and who is the artist?

13) What song brought Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi together in Ghost World and who sang it?

14) What song will change your life, according to "Natalie Portman" in Garden State and who sang it?

15) What song is in the final scene and initial credits of Good Will Hunting and who sang it?

Bonus: For anyone who remembers floyd, which two movies above did he hate and which one did he like? (100 dollars - all three must be correct to get this, don't just guess)

Round 4) Weird Sports - Name the Sport

16) I chase cheese down a hill.

17) I find a stick and drop it into the river to race other people's sticks.

18) The whole town plays. My team wins if I get the ball in the harbor and the other team wins if they touch the ball to the south wall. What sport am I playing and what team am I on?

19) I play polo with a goat caracas.

20) I play volleyball. . . but the ball is smaller and I only use my feet, knees and shoulders.

Round 5) Mosques - Name and City

21) Hagia Sophia, Istanbul

Round 6) Obscure Comic Book Superheroes - Name/Alias

26) I have no powers and I have no face but I have a sweet fedora.

27) I look like a tree but that doesn't stop me from being impervious to bullets and being able to fly in outer space. I'm also super-strong.

28) I have no powers except for my insanity driven persistence and I usually fight people with a gun and broken glass bottle. I also only wear flippers.

29) I can transform into any fruit and use the powers of these fruits to fight crime. Banana peel slippage, citrus juice squirtage etc.

30) I have an outfit with chameleon powers, a big sword and awesome ninja skills.

Round 7) Paradoxical - Name the paradox that goes with the story or statement

31) A teacher tells his students that there will be a pop quiz one day next week but that it will be a complete surprise. They won't know the day until he pulls out the papers at the beginning of the class. One student considers this for a moment then happily concludes that there will be no test. It can't be Friday because that is the last day of the week and it wouldn't be a surprise if they hadn't had a test by Thursday. . . And so on back through the week. The test happens on Wednesday and as a result the student is completely surprised. Everything the teacher said has come true.

32) If there are so many aliens out there why haven't I seen any?

33) I have two identical chocolate bars. How can I decide which one to eat?

34) To get to work I must arrive half-way there first. Before I get half-way to work, I must get a quarter of the way there. Before I get a quarter of the way there, I must get an eighth of the way there. . . and so on leading to an infinite number of trips. Therefore I cannot make it to work today.

35) If this sentence is true, aliens will conquer earth tomorrow.

Round 8) What do these three people have in common?

36) Spaceman Spiff, Stupendous Man, Tracer Bullet

6) Wrong
7) What specific type of paranoia
8) Correct - It has another, more formal name: the Cotard Delusion
9)Wrong - Panic disorder is more like anxiety attacks. I might add some extra information to help with that one.
10) correct

3) In a theatre superstition, wishing someone "good luck" is considered bad luck, so you do the opposite. Wish something bad on them instead. Hence, "break a leg."

12) Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta - Geto Boys

13) Caring is Creepy - The Shins

1) Anyone addicted to cocaine. Jones was a popular surname and it got attributed.

2) a "jay" referred to a stupid country-person...someone who wouldn't be informed about street crossings and such.

3) quoted from some site: "There is a superstition in the theatre that wishing an actor
good luck "tempts the gods" and causes bad luck, so negative
expressions are substituted. In French one says "Merde!" ("Shit!")
when an actor is about to go on stage. The German expression is
"Hals und Beinbruch"="neck and leg fracture" ("Bein" used to mean
"bone" in German, so the translation "neck and bone break" may be
correct if the expression is sufficiently old). The leading
theory is that the English expression came from the German, possibly
via Yiddish. Other suggested origins are: John Wilkes Booth, the
actor who broke his leg shortly after he assassinated Abraham
Lincoln in 1865; the great French actress Sarah Bernhardt, who "had
but one leg and it would be good luck to be like her"; wishing
someone a "big break", that is, good luck leading to success; and
the Hebrew "hatzlacha u-brakha" = "success and blessing"."

4) It relates to the trick of substituting a cat for a pig at markets. If they let the cat out of the bag, they disclosed the trick. There's another theory relating to the cat o' nine tails too.

5) Skeptics of Darwin's evolutionary theory.

3) Originated in "Hamlet"

Apparantly not. Some superstition originated in Hamlet but I recall now that it was simply that you should never say "Hamlet". A far less impressive superstition to be able to answer the origins of, I suppose.

1) "I'm jonesing for a cigarette." Who was Jones?

Heroin. (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_origin_of_the_terms_JONES_and_JONESING_as_they_relate_to_drug_addiction_and_craving)

If you don't believe that webpage, then it was Jim Jones. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Jones)

2) "I got caught jaywalking." Who were the jays?

In the early 1900s, the word "jay" was slang in the U.S. for a hick, rube, or simpleton -- in other words, a person inexperienced in the ways of the bright lights in the big city. Wordsmiths believe the term "jaywalking" (or "J-walking") originated when cars were relatively new but gaining popularity in cities like Boston and New York. A jaywalker was a newcomer to the city, green to the ways of those modern traffic signals that told folks when they could safely cross the road.

From http://ask.yahoo.com/20021024.html

3) Why would you wish someone a broken leg if you want them to do well?

I know this one without even needing to look it up. The term originates from the theater crowd, who have more superstitions and traditions than could fill a book. This superstition is the idea that to wish someone good luck is actually bad luck. Apparently the opposite is also true, so by wishing someone bad luck (a broken leg), they will actually have good luck.

1) Who was phone Jones?

According to The Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins by Robert Hendrickson, the origin of the phrase is rooted in the popular comic strip of the same name created by cartoonist Arthur R. "Pop" Momand. The strip debuted in 1913, ran in American newspapers for 28 years, and eventually was adapted into books, films, and musical comedies. The "Joneses" of the title were neighbors of the strip's main characters, and were spoken of but never actually appeared in person. It is possible that Momand named them in reference to George Frederic and Lucretia Stevens Rhinelander Jones, parents of writer Edith Newbold Jones Wharton; it could also be due to the fact that "Jones" is a very common name, applying to a lot of "normal" people (hence the expression).

Now, the next one will be scheduled for Nov. 15th(ish). . . but a couple of things. . .

First of all, does anyone have any suggestions, complaints, ideas etc. . . about the format or questions? Aside from these threads and a couple of bar trivia nights I'm a relative novice so if anyone has suggestions I'm quite open to them. (For example, I think the bonus round idea could have been done much better. . . It was meant to be fast and easy but that basically meant that the first person there got all the money - or was polite enough to leave some for others, which is just as boring.)

Second, I figured I'd try to pass on the creation of the trivia night to the winner. So, rhinosaur, if you want to make the next one let me know. If not, aelan or Ghost-Girl are next on call. If no one wants to do it, or doesn't have time, I'm happy to continue. I just think a change in author will make things a little more interesting for everyone. I think you should have a group of people author the questions. You have tough questions, but aelan's are crazy difficult and so are Jughead's. I think between the three of you, you have enough world travels and life experience to really make people work for the money. It should take a few days for people to get through all the questions, not a few hours.

Also, maybe more Casino Cash. Make it $50,000 so all of the people on the casino leaderboard get a little scared (and maybe participate).

Heh, I didn't want to make this one (especially as it was the first one) really hard because I wasn't sure if a trivia week would be as popular as a trivia day, but that's a fair point. We could try a group one, or maybe the top three finishers can collaborate?

As to the money issue, more money is good for me but we'll have to see what the sponsors think.

We'd also need to give PenguinHunter a chance to win some cash too.

I liked your questions, they were not instantly google-able; I mean, Ghost Girl even created another ID on a comic forum to ask. btw Ghost Girl, I'm not sure of your sex because over here, posters are of rather indeterminate gender to me.

More feedback:
I wasn't sure how/when the speed round started actually, I only knew it was open when I clicked OP and realised some were not cancelled out yet.

PH, I'm ok with the format and the drive-by posting. Easier and it's more exciting when things are on. The pictures categories were neat. Think we have to make it clear no edits of answers though (edits of comments are ok). We could also set e.g. marking time of answers is once a day.

To encourage more participation: More cash would be fun, as with the chance for a unique user title colour for the month. MacG did agree to that above. *hotpink hotpink hotpink* You may need more advertisement for it though, I think some were unaware.

^ wth... After Penguin's clues on Northern hemisphere tree, I was actually googling things like "Fir man".

dubbeltop, may I know what keywords you used on the search?

:p , I searched for 8 to 9 hours , visited every super hero site but...absolutely nothing...until I found this forum...where someone asked exactly the same question as on this forum....so I waited all day and just before I wanted to quit the answer was posted by Loki(thx Loki)...

http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?p=7734398

So no wonder some people find answers faster than others...they use other people to search for them(usually experts) instead of using google...but I google for googlers so I find the answers even faster.....which made me a very happy boy indeed.....yesterday...:gm:

Argh. I searched for a couple of hours, tried all variations of fir man, conifer man, forest man etc when "Northern hemisphere" was added.. then I got to the same link you did, but at that time, Loki hadn't posted yet. :stupid:

Best stumper question, PH.

Edit: I'm going to call Ghost Girl "Cosmic Celery" from now on.

That's because I'm smart!

...Damn you for reaping the fruits of my labor! *shakes fist*

Edit: I'm going to call Ghost Girl "Cosmic Celery" from now on.

Ha, actually, I wouldn't mind terribly. This is the last place on the net that I used Ghost-Girl. It's all Not On Boats and Cosmic Celery now.

I'm not sure how it would go over...but maybe a separate sub-forum in the playground for this where edits aren't allowed? I found that frustrating as a scavenger hunt host too. You spend a ton of time quoting people and giving out points, only to find that someone changed some of their answers around. If you only mark once a day, you'll never know exactly what someone edited and who should get the points (that could simply mean that the first person to reply wins, they'll just steal everyone's answers).

Also, could this be done on a weekend? I'd love to participate, but by the time I got home from work the thread was almost over. On the other hand, I'd definitely spend a weekend day scouring the internet for answers. I might be the only one, not sure.

I think more casino cash might do a lot for the advertising, which Mac(you're turning into s0) seems ok with.

I've started picking out questions for the next Trivia Night.

So far the categories are:
- Famous People
- Art
- Name that place

Suggestions are welcome.

How about whose ass is this?

Well, unfortunately, the number of submissions to the "post your ass on the forum" thread were few. However, I do think a "name that INTPc member" category could work. I would just need to wade through the "what we look like" threads.
