Earth Movers
Loosen the earth,
spade in hand.
Crack the dry dirt
to find richness beneath
in the form of cool, wet humus,
teeming with
worms and grubs
and in the form
of ancient bones
exquisitely lain,
each finger intact, unbroken.
Here are hands that once
held a spade also,
to garden, to make life spring
from that which has rotted
and decomposed,
devoured already by
the inhabitants of the soil.
Loosen the earth,
spade in hand.
Crack the dry dirt
to find richness beneath
in the form of cool, wet humus,
teeming with
worms and grubs
and in the form
of ancient bones
exquisitely lain,
each finger intact, unbroken.
Here are hands that once
held a spade also,
to garden, to make life spring
from that which has rotted
and decomposed,
devoured already by
the inhabitants of the soil.
