That's incredible.

Why aren't they inviting Holly the Hooker and Dom the Dealer? They run small businesses too that could be impacted by the new tax laws, but no one seems to give a damn about them.

Why does everyone feel sorry for Joe the Plumber and the possible taxes he might pay? Everyone knows plumbers (and electricians for that matter) are theiving bastards who will rape you of all you money for every conceivable fault conveniently discovered in your house. Let them get taxed to the hilt, I say.

The republicans have a virulent cult of personality thing going on, the fact that Joe the Plumber and Sarah the Wolf Hunting Pentecostal Baby Factory have been big hits is a little unnerving.

Then again, the Obamamania "yes we can" chanting has a really creepy cultish feel to it in person as well. At least he hasn't said anything quite as bizarre as the whole "anti-pro-america-muslim-communist-atheist-terrorist" meme.

Look at presidential campaigns as a TV show. The Ronald Reagan Show has been running for 28 years. Any 28-year-old show is at least a little creaky, but this one has replaced its main character several times, and each new star is worse than the last. You can tell it's jumped the shark because they keep desperately trying new gimmicks.

I simply must applaud your concise bluntness. I have never heard it put more succinctly or accurately before.

Also, you're right about how creepy the Obamania is.

Haha I just remembered something funny, I didn't think of it before.. but

My father actually refers to himself as "John the Carpet Guy". I hear that all the time when he's on the phone. It's kinda folksy I suppose but it works.

edit:: And he actually does sell carpets.

Although Mitt Romney is probably in a better position to clinch it at the moment.

Still 4 years is a long time.

On that note, what's up with the freakish button collecting? Several women at work collect, trade, and display their Obama/Biden pins like it's some kind of viable currency.

"I sent a 'Babies for Obama' pin to my grandbaby yesterday."
"Oh, that's great! She'll love that!* I just got a new 'I'm Sidin' with Biden' pin."
"The same size as the one you already have, or bigger?"
"Bigger, and blue this time."
"Oooh ooh, let me show you this new one!......."

*She will? She can't even control her own bowel movements yet.

That is quite frightening, though not that surprising. I'm fascinated by the fact that everyone has been trying to shunt the campaign onto her. Why are people enamored by the idea of someone who is 'folksy' (read: stupid) and an 'outsider' (read:clueless) appealing?

Do we really want someone with no idea of how government works? Okay, he's started his own business from scratch and that's admirable in it's own way. When toilet's clogged with shit, because that's what you know how to do. When I want an informed opinion, I'll go to someone who knows what's going on in the government.

Maybe I'm an elitist, but I'd much rather have some fuddy in his tweed sweet talking about something he understands than have somebody with a threadbare knowledge of politics babbling on about the death of Israel.

Seriously, Joe. You're a plumber. That's fantastic. You make our pipes hold water and that's important. But you're ideas don't. You're a symbol, not a cause, and you're fooling yourself if you actually buy media hype that classifies you as some sort of indicator for the election.

And while your psuedo-celebrity status will entertain us as you fling your poo around like an aggravated chimp, but eventually you will slip the poo you have irresponsibly flung and your audience, the inevitably ADD, pixie-stick-addled channel surfers that they are will move on. We'll find a new fad. So enjoy your short-lived fame. So, make sure your business keeps working for your precious fifteen minutes.

Whoever Joe the plumber actually turns out to be, the Republican penchant for creating condescending stereotypes for the people they pretend to serve, shows their arrogance toward those very people. 'Joe-sixpack', 'soccer-mom', 'Joe-the-plumber'... How sad that they do not see their fellow humans as three-dimensional, unique individuals. - Arye Michael Bender -

Exactly, the Republicans primary goal is to protect and further the interests of the wealthy elite. To do so, however, requires being elected and having to find people dumb enough to vote for them.

A lot of people have the mistaken idea we can improve politics if we replace the politicians with non-politicians, as if politics was not a skill, an art, or a profession. No, we can improve politics if we replace bad politicians with good ones.

Having dealt with a homeowners' association, I know what amateur politicians are like. Give me professionals, please.

McCain says [Joe the Plumber is] the only person that's managed to get a straight answer out of Obama. Which doesn't say much for McCain's debate performances, I'd argue.
