I am an A's fan, and more importantly a Barry Bonds fan, so I enjoyed today's Congressional hearings with an unusual amount of glee. After McGwire left to St. Louis and started talking about how he loved the city and wanted to go to the Hall of Fame as a Cardinal I did a complete 180 on the guy and no longer liked him. And of course, I like Barry Bonds because a)he plays for one of the local teams and b)he reminds me of myself (introverted, surly, black...).

So when all this steroid stuff started coming up and everyone wanted to throw Barry under the bus I wondered, "Why is no one bring up Big Mac's name." In my opinion he along with Sosa were juicing along with Caminiti, Canseco and all the other admitted users. Oh, but because he was America's shining hero, the "Great White Hope" if I can go so far as to say that McGwire was untouchable. And for that specific reason I waited 2.5 years for Canseco's book to come out and I finally got my wish. McGwire was outed as a roid monkey.

Even Sosa, who I believe used, denied using them in front of Congress. What did McGwire do? Get choked up. Wouldn't answer questions. Wouldn't even go on the record as having not used them.

So when Barry Bonds plays the race card and you roll your eyes and call him a clown ask yourselves why people were/are so unwilling to be so critical of and ask the same tough questions of Mark McGwire...

Here's the way I see it:
Bonds definitely used illegal performance enhancing drugs.
McGwire probably used illegal performance enhancing drugs. (along with the andro)
Sosa corked his bat.

I think McGwire is more "untouchable" because he was the first to break Maris' record and is responsible (along with Sosa) for bringing baseball back from the ill will of the strike season. Also, McGwire no longer plays while Bonds is spouting absurd BS to the media.

McGwire was crying - embarrassing and unbelieveable.

Quote from Article: "His voice choked with emotion, his eyes nearly filled with tears, time after time he refused to answer the question everyone wanted to know: Did he take illegal steroids when he hit a then-record 70 home runs in 1998 — or at any other time?"

As for Bonds - he most definitely relied upon steroids to boost his career. These are not the best photos for comparison - but it is impossible to deny Bonds' amazing transformation from a scrawny Pirate to a massive bull of a man. Look at the size of his pumpkin head - that grew over the years as well. Not a normal progression for a grown man in my opinion.

Well, they brought it back with the help of steroids, so you could say that steroids actually brought the game back. The funny thing is, so many people don't care. They would rather these athletes be expendable "gladiators" for their amusement than healthy, normal human beings. Of course, most of these people wouldn't even care if their kids took steroids as long as their kids were bringing home 7 figure paychecks every year. It shows you how much the typical American cares more about "power" and "money" than any other qualities, such as the personal health of other human beings and the integrity and fairness of the "national pastime."
