I can't put words on this but if you watch the clip, you know what I'm talking about. The only living performers I can think of who reach that level of ehh .. whatever it is, is Jack Nicholson and perhaps Morgan Freeman. Perhaps you could help me think of others? Living and dead actors are wellcome.

Some dead actors I can think of are:
Marlene Dietrich
Clark Gable
Bette Davis
Judy Garland
Rita Hayward
Marlon Brando
Gretha Garbo
Charlie Chaplin
Humphrey Bogart

Living actors:
Jack Nicholson
Elizabeth Taylor

Perhaps Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Hopkins.
Perhaps Toshiro Mifune but I'll have to watch more movies with him to judge.

Hmm, I havn't seen many movies with her but while she's fantistic she hasn't made that WOW impression on me - got a clip which captures that special thing?

She isn't too bad, though neither have I seen much of her performances. Unfortunate that she practically ended her career in the 60's, as she undoubtably would have made a few WOW impressions. She died fairly young compared to her mother (who lived 30 years longer than her).

Audrey Hepburn

Hmm, could just be a matter of personal taste but I still don't see it. She's good but non of those clips makes me feel as if a horse kicked me in the stomach. I'd like to understand what you'r seeing though? There are some things which I've learned to understand the value of when other people tell me what to look for and other things which I instinctively understand the value of. Oh yeah, the clip with Jack in the diner definetly belongs to the last category.

Edited to add.
Just thought of another living actor which might make my list of living actors as well - Samuel L. Jackson.
Oh and a couple of dead ones too - Charlie Chaplin and Humphrey Bogart - how could I forget...

Has a list of what they consider top actors/actresses. Humphrey certainly is good, and I'm sure much of AFI hasn't yet considered many modern ones yet, as some of their careers are still ongoing. I was thinking of mentioning Charlie Chaplin earlier as well, that and/or Buster Keaton. Shelley Winters has done well. Joe Turkel was good in Path's of Glory. Nicole Kidman comes across as perplexing sometimes. Al Pacino definately has had some wow moments. Anthony Hopkins, Ralph Fiennes, Robbin Williams, Matt Damon even. Uma Thurman (though I don't consider her as strong in character as others, and I never watched Kill Bill in fear of this,) Ryan O'Neil (Barry Lyndon had some weak parts in acting, though other times revealed compelling acting ability from him.)

Ah thanks - that list is a good starting point. As for me, there's still a gap between actors like Alpacino/Anthony Hopkins/Mat Damon and Jack Nicholson. I don't think I've ever watched a scene with Jack Nicholson which was "just good". BTW, I'm not sure whether they'r serious or not when they place Sylvester Stallone and Miss Piggy on that list? As for Charlie Chaplin, I watched Modern Times on youtube today, havn't seen that one since I was a kid, it truely is a masterpiece :) .

Ok, perhaps I have to reconsider Hopkins. It's just that I don't remember any other role than the Lector role in which he could spellbound me whereas Jack has managed to do so in many.

Vivien Leigh. Amazing. I can't find the video of the scene I want...

Vivien Leigh.

I thought about her but in my head there's still a small gap between the performance I've seen from her (it's limited to gone with the wind) and the performances I've seen from the others I placed on my short list.

In my head I placed her on the same level as actors like Lana Turner and Ava Gardner - very high but still below an actor like Rita Hayward.

But perhaps I'm committing a crime here. Could be that when you reach a certain level, comparing one actor to another stops making sense.

If you're gonna compare a Hanzo sword, you compare it to every other sword ever made... that wasn't made by Hattori Hanzo. :)

How about non-Western actors? Toshiro Mifune always put on an excellent performance, and so did Isizu Yamada (she was the Lady in Throne of Blood and the landlord's wife in Yojimbo).

Her performance in Streetcar was fantastic too.

I'm a novice when it comes to non-European non-American actors but thanks for helping me find Toshiro Mifune and a samurai movie I've been looking for for ages. I saw a samurai movie when I was about 9 or 10 which made a great impression on me, I just googled Toshiro Mifune and he played the lead role - it was Yojimbo. I even found this particular gang fight I've been trying to find

Hey, cool! Yojimbo is great, yes. It almost reminds me of a play more than a film in a lot of ways. I'd say it's Mifune's best performance (that I've seen), really. He plays in a lot of Akira Kurosawa's movies, I'd definitely recommend seeing a few of them.

Bah, so you'r saying I started with the best. Can you recommend the second best? It's just that we're messing with my childhood memories here so I wouldn't want to spoil my impression of him by going down hill too drastically.

Well, that's just my opinion, and I'm definitely not a film expert or anything. But I'd say that either Throne of Blood or Seven Samurai would be his second best. They're both very different, though. Throne of Blood is Kurosawa's version of Macbeth, and as such, it's very dark. But Seven Samurai is both fun and serious in parts, so I'd recommend that.

Thanks, I'll ask my husband to get all 3 of them for me.

Just thought of another living actor who could very well belong to the list. I'd actually rate him higher than Anthony Hopkins since I don't recall seeing hin in a scene where he was just good. Primal fear, American History X, Fight Club etc. what do you think?

Just thought about some of the music Chaplin wrote for his movies.
Ps6ck1ejoAw

Smile though your heart is aching;
Smile even though it's breaking.
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by.
If you smile through your fear and sorrow,
Smile and maybe tomorrow,
You'll see the sun come shining through for you.

Light up your face with gladness,
Hide every trace of sadness.
Although a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying,
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile,
If you just smile.

That's the time you must keep on trying,
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

Not sure who later on wrote the lyrics.

Edited to add. This red wine toddy is making me all sentimental. This has to be one of the most heart breaking scenes ever.
