Someone I used to work with introduced me to this a couple years ago: http://robocode.alphaworks.ibm.com/home/home.html and our office toyed around with it for a week or two. It's essentially a survival of the fittest robot tank simulation in which you write your own code for your robot; the programming is as complicated as you want to make it. There are plenty of example robots and a programming novice could probably come up with a decent performing tank without too much effort. (One of the best performing tanks in our office was also probably the simplest -- I found this somewhat frustrating given the amount of strategy I had tried to incorporate into mine.) Here is the API (http://robocode.alphaworks.ibm.com/docs/robocode/index.html) info.
If there is interest, I thought a contest may be fun.
