I'm changing the format a little here. I think you'll find it more fair regionally, but more difficult overall. The questions will be more time consuming to answer which should balance out some of the time zone constraints we've had in the past. Also, I think this one could be really rewarding for someone willing to put some time into it.

And with that, the part you've been waiting for:

Question 1:

I know that everyone here loves fraternities and sororities and looks upon them with the utmost respect. With that in mind, you'll love this question.

List the fraternal associations of every American who made it into space from the inception of NASA to the Challenger disaster of 1986.

No part marks.

$5000

Question 2:

http://www.intpcentral.com/uploads/better%20proverb.jpg

Describe what this means and give its non literal meaning.

$5000

Question 3:

This is a fun one. Sort of.

There is a video game here:

http://www.addictinggames.com/motorush2.html

To win this one you have to have the highest score of anyone here. Your score will be the number of trophies you attain multiplied by your score. You need to post a picture of the Trophies Room page inside the game for your score to count. There is two catches with this. The first is that you can only post your score once. The second is that this question can't be the last one answered. After the other questions have had correct answers the scavenger hunt is over and any submissions given for this question after the final question has been answered won't count. While the game itself is easy, obviously it's in your best interest to employ some strategy here when it comes to your submissions.

$5000, of course.

Question 4:

Six Degrees of Separation.

Link the following groups with the fewest degrees possible. Your score is a total degrees from all the groups. You'll need to show your work as well.

1. Connect Shaq to Miley Cyrus via Errol Flynn
2. Connect Guy Ritchie to Madonna via Takashi Shimura
3. Connect Cary Grant to Kathryn Hepburn via Charlie Chaplin and Mary-Kate Olson.

Seriously, good luck with this one. And because you have to show your work, no duplicate answers.

$5000. I wish I could give you more.

Question 5:

This is an easy one. Some easy math.

This is a diagram of a set of concrete stairs:
http://www.intpcentral.com/uploads/24839784e9b329ad5c9ecf5ddbb8a491SCAN001001js.JPG

I need the following:

Unit Rise (units: mm one decimal place)
Unit Run (units: mm one decimal place)
Total Rise per Flight (units: mm round up to next full mm)
Total Run (units: round up to next full mm)

Soffit Rise (units: round up to next full mm)
Soffit Run (units: round up to next full mm)
Soffit Line Length (units: round up to next full mm)
Soffit Area (units: metres squared, three decimal places)

Soffit Form Ply (size of sheet is 2.88m^2) (units: full sheets)

Soffit Stringer (400mm from beam. 750mm O.C. maximum - evenly spaced) (units: number of stringers)

Longest Shore Post (400 mm from beam. Deduct 250mm for formwork components) (units: round up to next full mm)

I'm going to be a hardass on these ones. The math is pretty easy, but figuring out the actual components will be difficult, as well as how they all fit together. You have to get all of them to get this correct. Since there is really only one right answer, if you request it, I'll let you know what you got wrong via the rep points, but not how you got it wrong. Also, make sure your units and the number of decimal places is correct.

I'm going to try and attach a larger view of the image, either here or on another post.

Oh, $5000.

Good luck with all of these. And happy New Years!!

Shites mgb, devilishly difficult.

I'm going for question 2:

It is an Arabic proverb that literally means "The onion of the beloved is a sheep."

In the traditional culture, the onion is the meanest of vegetables even the poor can afford, while the sheep is a valuable animal owned only by the wealthier families.

It is hence a twofold metaphor for a) how love can change perception and b) how love, when from a beloved, can make a poor gift seem a rich one.

^ Question on question 3, is the 5000 per question or each question is worth 5000/3, or you must answer all connections before you even get the 5K?

^ Question on question 4, is the 5000 per question or each question is worth 5000/3, or you must answer all connections before you even get the 5K?

You have to get all three to get the question right.

Also, you have to have the lowest number when all three are added together. So if you have a better way to get from one person to the next you can steal the question (obviously within the time frame of the competition).

I should also note that while I said "no duplicate answers" I really meant that you can't take someone else's answer. If you can find another way to do another part of the question, you can re-use one of your own answers - just no one else's.

Just shooting for question 4. A bit clumsy, but anyhow:

1: Shaq & Errol Flynn were both police officers who ended up in different careers : http://www.spiritus-temporis.com/police/related-articles.html

Errol Flynn's nephew, Sean Flynn, is in Nickelodeon's stable of teenage stars, along with Miley Cyrus.

3 degrees: Shaq - Errol - Sean - Miley

2:
Guy Ritchie and Takashi Shimura were in the 11th Tokyo International Film Festival Lineup. The former for Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, the latter for The Most Beautiful and Drunken Angel, amongst others. http://www.tiff-jp.net/en/tiff/lineup.php?id=11

Takashi Shimura is one of the lead actors in many Akira Kurosawa films, including the two mentioned above.

Akira Kurosawa and Madonna were both part of the Cannes film festival 1991. Him for Rhapsody in August, her for Madonna: Truth or Dare. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9807E0D7123AF93AA25756C0A967958260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=1

3 degrees: Guy - Takashi - Akira - Madonna

3.
Cary Grant was engaged and married to Virginia Cherill, who had played the blind girl in Charlie Chaplin's City Lights. http://www.cosmopolis.ch/english/cosmo14/carygrant.htm

Charlie Chaplin appears in a song by the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen "Double Up". http://www.lyricstime.com/mary-kate-and-ashley-olsen-double-up-lyrics.html

Mary-Kate is said to be considering starring in an Audrey Hepburn movie remake Wait Until Dark. http://technorati.com/posts/i5ypJLcaVqeTg_28x0idizOV1I_ilRK4NoU52R9G8xs%3D

Audrey Hepburn and Katharine Hepburn share a common ancestor, James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell (the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots). http://www.salon.com/people/feature/1999/10/06/hepburns/index.html

6 degrees: Cary - Virginia - Charlie - Mary-Kate - Audrey - James - Katharine

I'm going to stop both you and foodeater right there.

Just to clarify:

I'm looking for a picture like this:

http://www.intpcentral.com/uploads/f219a39f057662d60296dc113848a028trophyroom.JPG

Also, your scores are abysmally low. Since you only have one opportunity to submit an answer and since the game puts a cookie on your computer allowing you to continue from where you left off at another time, maybe take some time and build your scores up. Unless there aren't anymore submissions, maybe we'll consider both of those answers "friendly banter" since they weren't really what I was looking for picture wise.

I think so.... it took me a couple of hours for the arab quote alone.... the connections one was some more hours... I got the list of space travellors, saw the length, and my eyes glazed.... saw the math and eyes glazed even more...

I'm now firmly convinced mgb is the jerkiest jerk around.

But heck, I like him anyway. :)

I wouldn't mind doing the next one. :happpy:

It'd probably be more like the previous one, speed and a few stumpers, if folks miss some, too bad.

I figured that a couple of the members had setup secret laboratories in their basements so that they could conduct experiments to come up with the exact correct answers to all of the questions and that their research just wasn't quite finished yet.

I don't know, technically there is still $20,000 in casino cash on the table.

It's been a week and there are two participants so far. You guys lick balls (participants excluded).

And, aelan wins!!

You get $15,000 in casino cash and a color username of your choice. I hope you pick a good one, and remember, it's way more distinguished than yellow or blue since you'll be the only one that has it.

9 Jan 2009, 02:53 AM
Wait! I want to know the answers to the connections (was mine right) and the space-travellers questions.

I know.. I don't really like the orangey poop colour of the awards...

Could I have dark purple like this?

Actually, the color you can have is only limited by the scope of what the internet can provide (you can use code for your color, not just the suggested colors vbulletin provides).

Sure your answer was right! There are a million different combinations and permutions for that game. And being that you are the only one that attempted an answer - that pretty much makes it as right as it's going to get.

The first question was probably the easiest one. There weren't really that many astronauts that actually went into space and if you go to wikipedia some dork in the frat would have for sure edited the fraternal association into the article.

eg: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Cernan

I bet you could have answered this question inside an hour. And while the frat part might not be super interesting, maybe the astronaut part would have been.
