View Full Version : You are in a town.

Townsfolk, mafiosos, gather 'round.
Let me guide you through a fantasy.
You are walking down a town's main street.
You notice the town streets seem completely empty. Why would this be?
You keep walking. There is a tall building with a man in the shadows, looking through the window at you. You look straight at him. What does he do?
Suddenly you see a woman running down the street in your direction like the devil was after her. Does she notice you, say anything, or run right past you? Why do you think she's running?
You keep walking. You feel thirsty. You suddenly notice an old man selling drinks by the side of the road. Everything is closed. What do you think when you see him?
In any case, you're thirsty as hell so you ask him what drinks he's selling. The man looks at you and says: "No. You don't need a drink. You need..." He pulls something out of his pocket. What is it?

Just play you guys. You know this is fun. You know you wanna tell us what that town is like.
Come on... one of us will die soon. While we're all still together. Gather 'round the bonfire and tell us a story about this town, and that day you walked down its Main Street...
You notice the town streets seem completely empty. Why would this be?
Because it's night time. In other lands, mothers may tell their children stories of horrible men and monsters that walk the streets at night. In this town, the monsters are among us. Instead of the mothers telling stories of what lurks outside to get them to eat their veggies, they instead simply threaten the children with the idea of stepping out at night.
You keep walking. There is a tall building with a man in the shadows, looking through the window at you. You look straight at him. What does he do?
We stare at eachother for a couple minutes, unblinking. Slowly, slowly, I let my lips curl into a toothy grin. He blinks a few times, furrows his brows, and backs away. Slowly.
Suddenly you see a woman running down the street in your direction like the devil was after her. Does she notice you, say anything, or run right past you? Why do you think she's running?
She high fives me and says, "Rhu! You're fucking awesome!" Then she gives me a hug and we go to the arcade and play some pinball. I don't know if it's love, but I sure hope it is.
You keep walking. You feel thirsty. You suddenly notice an old man selling drinks by the side of the road. Everything is closed. What do you think when you see him?
I wonder if I should ask him about the meaning of pinball. Old men are wise and know much of the things that have passed throughout time. Perhaps he will sell me a dictionary.
In any case, you're thirsty as hell so you ask him what drinks he's selling. The man looks at you and says: "No. You don't need a drink. You need..." He pulls something out of his pocket. What is it?
A thesaurus. Sneaky bastard. "You do love words, Rhu," he intones in his soft voice. I didn't even realize that I had told him my name. I furrow my brows and take a step back. He blushes. I don't know if it's love, but I think I just gave up on hope.

You notice the town streets seem completely empty. Why would this be?They fear me, I have a reputation. I hear doors and shutters close as I pass. I am the man. Did I mention I'm naked?
You keep walking. There is a tall building with a man in the shadows, looking through the window at you. You look straight at him. What does he do?Am I in the building, or is he - the answer to this decides which of us is flashing the other.
Suddenly you see a woman running down the street in your direction like the devil was after her. Does she notice you, say anything, or run right past you? Why do you think she's running? She stops, because I'm an honest and upright member of the community with an honest face. I think she was participating in one of those crazy bull runs that these crazy latin people seem to enjoy. They're always playing with someone's bulls.
You keep walking. You feel thirsty. You suddenly notice an old man selling drinks by the side of the road. Everything is closed. What do you think when you see him?I ignore him, I'm not buying drinks from some old foreign man on the street, what are you crazy? - if it's not piss he probably spat in it. Not because I'm a hated criminal or anything, it's probably because he just doesn't take kindly to me as a foreigner in a foreign land....yeah, that's it.
In any case, you're thirsty as hell so you ask him what drinks he's selling. The man looks at you and says: "No. You don't need a drink. You need..." He pulls something out of his pocket. What is it?What kind of multiple choice is this? I chose ignore - HELP HELP! I'm being repressed!
The item is a MONKEY'S PAW!

You notice the town streets seem completely empty. Why would this be?
Because I am God in this place. My gift to my people is fear, paranoia and murder. They know I walk the streets at night and they fear me.
You keep walking. There is a tall building with a man in the shadows, looking through the window at you. You look straight at him. What does he do?
This man hurts people. He is a murderer. He kneels before me and seeks my blessing. I can see that his hands are bloody. This man does my work, and I bless him.
Suddenly you see a woman running down the street in your direction like the devil was after her. Does she notice you, say anything, or run right past you? Why do you think she's running?
She notices me and exclaims in fear. She falls to her knees and she begs my mercy. I have very little of that and I wonder if one of my servants was pursuing her. I look about, and see none of my children striving to end her life. I wonder if her destiny lies with the man in the alley, and I let her flee to her fate.
You keep walking. You feel thirsty. You suddenly notice an old man selling drinks by the side of the road. Everything is closed. What do you think when you see him?
I wonder if he fears that I will end him.
In any case, you're thirsty as hell so you ask him what drinks he's selling. The man looks at you and says: "No. You don't need a drink. You need..." He pulls something out of his pocket. What is it?
It is an offering to my divinity. I accept his generous offering, and I promise not to kill him or his family this night. I purchase a drink from him, and I sit and placidly observe my dominion while I savor the drink.

Fine. But I'm sure as hell not going into your forest.
You are walking down a town's main street.
* You notice the town streets seem completely empty. Why would this be?
It's Superbowl Sunday in Arizona, and everyone's huddled around their widescreens glibly muching jalapeno poppers and buffalo wings and guzzling pale and watery beer, waiting to see if their team will be a catastrophic let-down.
* You keep walking. There is a tall building with a man in the shadows, looking through the window at you. You look straight at him. What does he do?
He smiles, waves, and then drops his pants... the stands there, dong dangling for all to see, eating what appears to be a burrito.
* Suddenly you see a woman running down the street in your direction like the devil was after her. Does she notice you, say anything, or run right past you? Why do you think she's running?
Honestly, I don't understand why anyone runs. Based on her attire, I'm guessing that she's running because she thinks she's fat, but it could also be that her treadmill has ceased functioning.
* You keep walking. You feel thirsty. You suddenly notice an old man selling drinks by the side of the road. Everything is closed. What do you think when you see him?
I think: Aren't lemonade stands usually a childhood venture, not a geriatric one? Then I think: Ugh. He doesn't wear a hair net. There's probably old-people hair in the lemonade. I wonder if he's got anything canned or bottled.
* In any case, you're thirsty as hell so you ask him what drinks he's selling. The man looks at you and says: "No. You don't need a drink. You need..." He pulls something out of his pocket. What is it?
It's a kitten. Awwww! Kitty! How could he have known that I needed a kitten, I wonder? I put the mewing little thing inside my jacket, thank him warmly, and hope it doesn't piss on me before I get where I'm going. I also hope there's no television there, because I hate football. I then wonder again about the cleanliness of making lemonade while handling kitties. I shrug and smile as I feel her start purring and go off in search of a can of tuna.

I'll break it down for you, there are 5 questions, your answers tell me this:
1-(streets) townie
2-(man in shadows) mafia
3-(woman running) mafia
4-(man selling drinks) townie
5-(object) mafia
FWIW I can't be sure. I think question one is the most important though.

You are walking down a town's main street.
* You notice the town streets seem completely empty. Why would this be?
Because I am legend.
* You keep walking. There is a tall building with a man in the shadows, looking through the window at you. You look straight at him. What does he do?
He remains still, doesn't move. That's good. I hate it when the dead start moving around.
* Suddenly you see a woman running down the street in your direction like the devil was after her. Does she notice you, say anything, or run right past you? Why do you think she's running?
Infected. It doesn't even shock me anymore. I raise my gun calmly. A well aimed shot and it falls. Peaceful at last.
* You keep walking. You feel thirsty. You suddenly notice an old man selling drinks by the side of the road. Everything is closed. What do you think when you see him?
Poor bastard. Thinks he can save them with his "holy water". Gonna die too soon if he doesn't change his mind.

The Holy Bible, what else. I leave him without a word and continue my never ending patrol...
FYI: I'm not the detective I just thought about "Why would the streets be empty?", and stayed with the concept.

Interesting. From the beginning, I have decided to go with the straightforward (e.g. opposite of OMW's) strategy: declare my townie status and try to be as transparent as possible. I was trying to answer the questions such that other townies would hopefully identify me as one of them. I get the feeling you are purposely trying to inject disinformation... :thelook:

I've wondered into the Twilight Zone...cool!
You keep walking. There is a tall building with a man in the shadows, looking through the window at you. You look straight at him. What does he do?
He leaves my field of sight somehow; has he simply retreated into the shadows, or did he disappear?
Suddenly you see a woman running down the street in your direction like the devil was after her. Does she notice you, say anything, or run right past you? Why do you think she's running?
She doesn't notice me, so I step in front of her and stop her. The story she tells is ambiguous and somewhat hysterical, leaving open multiple storyline opportunities while eliminating any suspicion that there is a "natural" explanation for what's going on. Her pronounced state of terror has eliminated her self-will and rational thinking capabilities, so she tags along with me because "in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king."
You keep walking. You feel thirsty. You suddenly notice an old man selling drinks by the side of the road. Everything is closed. What do you think when you see him?
What the hell is in those drinks!?
In any case, you're thirsty as hell so you ask him what drinks he's selling. The man looks at you and says: "No. You don't need a drink. You need..." He pulls something out of his pocket. What is it?
Some recognizable but little-used object that anyone would be familiar with, and can guess no legitimate use for.
Edit: Apparently, multi-quoting a single post doesn't work...

Basic logic:
Streets - feeling vulnerable/confused/threatened spells townie
Man in the window - is Mafia because he can see you from a higher place, you should distrust him
Woman running - she is the scared townsfolk. If she is not scared or distressed, it means you are not projecting this onto her - you're mafia
Man selling drinks - Undercover mafia, a townie does not trust him
Object - if it's good, you are mafia. If it's bad, you are townie.
I got them all right:
Rhu posted that he was walking around in the town at night. I have no idea why he said something so transparent as the Mafia kill at night. But Rhu doesn't really care I think. The fact that the woman running didn't scare him was a big deal, since she is supposed to be in trouble. As he was mafia, he didn't feel vulnerable and did not project this vulnerability onto her. Also, you should not trust the man behind the window if you are townie. Rhu smiles at him. Or the man selling drinks, you have to distrust him. But this man gives Rhu a very nice gift, a Thesaurus. What more could our story-writer ask for. ;)
I PMed Limey telling him that his walking in the town naked meant he was a townie. This is paranoia at being visible to others (the mafia can see, the townies can't). His whole story was paranoid. LOL. The man selling drinks: "I ignore him, I'm not buying drinks from some old foreign man on the street, what are you crazy?" Distrust. Then he pulls a monkey's paw out of his pocket.
Rincon posted a seemingly townie story but everything else he did made me think he was mafia, and I lied on his analysis as a test. I told him in PM, however, that his story was Townie. I wonder now if he was Mafia or not.
aelan's town story told me she was a townie, a very clever one, it's why I contacted her first. She killed the old man selling drinks. It means she was suspicious of someone undercover, and was confident she could beat him. It was very smart.
I wanted to believe manza was townie. Her story spelt Mafia. I disregarded it for a long time. She is not threatened by the man in the shadows. He's just funny to her. The woman is running because she's fat. :D The worst part spelling mafia was: the man selling drinks gives her a kitten.
sandwich said she did not know why the streets were empty - of course, a Townie does not know what is "going on." The man in the shadow hides from her. The man in the shadows is the mafia. That was good. But she did not think anything weird about the woman running, and this cast some doubt on her story. (Now I see this was because she was the detective.) But the last part saved it - she feels she cannot trust the man selling drinks.
I did not interpret Autumn's because I thought it meant Detective, despite how obvious it should be she would not say, "I am not the detective." I did however trust Autumn as Townie and told her so in PM.
There were some other nice details to the stories, maybe one day I will interpret them thoroughly... ;)
(Now you may all cringe at what I saw in the forest. )

For Oso:
Because I am God in this place. My gift to my people is fear, paranoia and murder. They know I walk the streets at night and they fear me.
Of course you are God, and yes we did fear you on both sides.
This man hurts people. He is a murderer. He kneels before me and seeks my blessing. I can see that his hands are bloody. This man does my work, and I bless him.
You speak of the Mafia here, the man in the window.
You talk about the Townies. It makes sense they turn to you for mercy. Strangely though, you say you did not see "your children" trying to end her life. I think you had little faith in a mafia victory.
You have very little mercy? Uh huh osito, yes yes we believe you.
I wonder if he fears that I will end him.
The Mafia. And you root for the underdog.
It is an offering to my divinity. I accept his generous offering, and I promise not to kill him or his family this night. I purchase a drink from him, and I sit and placidly observe my dominion while I savor the drink.
Not to kill him this night. Again, you position yourself as a threat to the Mafia. This was comforting.
:maddyx: ositooooooo :maddyx:

I got them all right:
I suspected that the overall paranoia or the lack thereof should indicate townie/mafia status the most. But I had no idea about the details.
Just as I wrote I was thinking about the first question (Why is town empty?) and made the mistake that I read the responses before taking the test. Rhu's answer was so straightforward I couldn't think of anything else, but I didn't want to repeat. Then suddenly the film I am Legend came into my mind. And then I enjoyed that I could fit all encounters into that setup. Only when I read it through did I realize that it just screams for "Detective". I didn't want the mafia to kill me on that belief so the "I'm not the detective" claim was only to indicate that indeed I'm aware that this post made me look like the cop.
You missed my gender though...

LOL. Sorry - I think I have called you he and she before. It is funny - I make a whole analysis of people and can't figure out gender!
Yeah, your whole story seemed detectivey. Maybe that is the reason I trusted you and stuck with it - your story is hard to make out as townie or mafia.
By the way, I could not afford to say "Don't read the responses before answering," it sounds too much like another test I made, once upon a time...

I know it's a bit late, but, here's mine:
You notice the town streets seem completely empty. Why would this be?
Because is summer and all the citizens have massively moved to Hawaii for vacation.
You keep walking. There is a tall building with a man in the shadows, looking through the window at you. You look straight at him. What does he do?
He quickly looks elsewhere, then opens a newspaper in front of him and pretends he's reading.
Suddenly you see a woman running down the street in your direction like the devil was after her. Does she notice you, say anything, or run right past you? Why do you think she's running?
She doesn't notice me, she runs right past me. She's almost missing her plane.
You keep walking. You feel thirsty. You suddenly notice an old man selling drinks by the side of the road. Everything is closed. What do you think when you see him?
"How strange, in a deserted town like this, an old man, all alone, selling drinks".
In any case, you're thirsty as hell so you ask him what drinks he's selling. The man looks at you and says: "No. You don't need a drink. You need..." He pulls something out of his pocket. What is it?
A gun. I jump back, because I think he's threatening me, but he smiles, revealing a mouth full of bad teeth and he gives it to me, winking.
EDIT:
Just read the rest of the thread. Oh nevermind.
