I, your friendly neighbourhood astronomical observation, will be taking over as Narrator temporarily from Oso, who will actually be playing.

The game will begin on Monday, March 2. Signup is now closed, PM me if you would like to help write death notices, though!

RULES:


The general rules of Mafia (courtesy Wikipedia):
Players are secretly assigned roles: either "mafia", who know each other; or "townspeople", who know only the number of mafia amongst them. During the night phase of the game, the Mafia choose an innocent to kill. During the day phase, all players debate the identities of the Mafia and vote to kill someone whom the majority suspect. Players are eliminated until either all mafia are killed or the mafia outnumber the innocents

Forum specific rules:
1. Communication among the Townsfolk must be done in only on the Mafia Contest subforum. No exceptions. You can PM the Narrator to ask rule-related questions if you need to. Anyone who receives a game-related private message from another member has the option of forwarding it to me, which will kill the member who originally sent it. In game, that player was stealthily murdered by the recipient of the message.

2. It will be announced whether or not an eliminated player was guilty or innocent if they were lynched by the Townsfolk.

3. Spreadsheets will be banned from play because they're a performance enhancing drug.

4. There should be two turns per day of play. The Mafia are expected to figure out who they're going to kill concurrent with Townsfolk voting.

5. Townsfolk voting will be public and end at 4.30 PM Eastern Time (11.30 AM GMT) everyday.

6. Townies will all have in-game roles, but only special roles have powers. Special roles in play will be Detective, Doctor, Vigilante and Don.

Detective:
Allied with the Townsfolk the "Detective" can detect whether a player is a Mafia. They can check with the narrator about the alignment of a specific player once every turn. Their identity is known only to them, although they may choose to disclose it strategically.

Doctor:
Allied with the Townsfolk, the "Doctor"-type role defends others. They pick one person to protect; that person will survive any Mafia or Vigilante attack for that turn. Their identity is known only to them, although they may choose to disclose it strategically.

Vigilante:
Allied with the Townsfolk, the Vigilante can kill a certain number of suspected Mafia. Their identity is known only to them, although they may choose to disclose it strategically.

Don:
Allied with the Mafia, the Don is their public spokesperson. He cannot vote or be lynched, and he does not count as an extra Mafia member for purposes of winning the game. However, he is publicly Mafia, and is helping the Mafia plan their strategy. This game's Don is Etherealsage

7. Mafia status and special roles will be assigned via random generator.

8. The game will start with the killing of a NPC so that everyone gets to play at least a little.

9. I can't make your lynching decisions, but it's not really appropriate to lynch people for out-of-game reasons ("they've been online all day!" or "they were reading a PM!")

SUGGESTION FOR THREAD POLICY:


It would be nice if we could limit the number of threads started about the game, so those with not as much time could keep up. Here's what I propose.

Official Narrative Thread
To keep track of what's going on in the game. Contains list of players, who get crossed off as they die. Also contains a summary of actions in each turn, who died, who killed them and their status (innocent/guilty) if killed by townies.

[Turn #X] Death and Discussion Thread
Made every turn when the Mafia kills someone. Serves as a death announcement, too. Townie discussion for that turn can go in the same thread, and I can create a "Who You Suspect" poll to go with it. The townie lynching and vigilante kills (if any) can also go in this thread.

[Turn #X] Voting Thread
This is where you vote every turn. I guess I could create one huge voting thread for the whole game, but it would make collection of votes confusing.

The Graveyard
For our esteemed dead players to bitch about how innocent they were.

For non-players to speculate.

Maybe you could have one thread explaining the deaths instead of a separate thread for each of them, kind of like an obituary. By the end of the last game I was having trouble figuring out who was still alive and who wasn't.

I like the idea suggested previously, which is one thread per day for discussion, and then maybe one single voting thread (where people ONLY vote), a thread for posting member deaths and keeping tally of who's still alive, and then a thread for non-playing members.

There was. The Mafia thought that meant that you'd written the notice based on their analysis of different poster's writing styles.

Also can it be made clear that using peoples forum habits is not good way to bring about accusations. I'm finding myself accused in both games for the way I browse the forum and I don't like it. I'll have to go invisible just to play the game without being lynched because of people like LR. and then the mods can see me anyway -_-

Just keep a window open with the WWLL thread in it (anyone of them) and anytime you do something like PM, refresh it so that they think you are just stalking teh pix. They won't think twice about it.

I'm thinking about all of the ideas proposed, and here's what I have so far. I'm wondering if I should take 2ds up on his suggestion and make all of the threads myself. What do people think of this plan (especially merging the three death threads for each round) and of preventing other thread activity by having me make all the threads?

If you're mafia you can still bet, technically. You cannot bet on identities of mafiaso, obviously, but you can bet on game outcome or order of townie kill before the voting discussion starts for e.g. There are many ways to lose casino cash. :grin:
