Reminiscences of Tenterfield
written by Mr Isaac Whereat 1913 V3098/53

SALISBURY HOUSE: (116 Rouse St.) Built for Isaac Whereat in 1868. A leading citizen of Tenterfield, Isaac was First Mate on Nelson's battleship "Victory" before coming to Australia.

that is all the information i can give you.

dont bother searching in the tenterfield library, the state libraries of australia, the national australian library, the university library of new england in australia, the british library, the library of congress, or amazon. this book is hidden in a slightly more remote area than that.

this has to be the ultimate search, finding a book that is mentioned in passing with only two scraps of information to guide you

There's one in the Crawford Collection at the University of New England.

What makes you think there isn't ?

:( i know there is, i ran a search again after i posted this, but a few months ago i did a search for it in their library and came up empty handed.

:( the search was too easy, from now on i shall make the book searches harder

You mean Isaac II, I guess: unless you're a lot older than I thought...

That's quite impressive: First Mate on the Victory.

no, it went like this;

Isaac Sydney Whereat (Great Great-Grandad, Author)
Sydney Leslie Whereat (great-Grandad)
Leslie Sydney Whereat (grandad)
Richard James Whereat (dad)
Richard Leslie Whereat (me, 21, author)

and his brother was the founder of the school of arts in tenterfield where the federation speech was given by our first prime minister Sir Edmond Barton, and he was also Worshipful Master of the Masons in tenterfield.

Quite. But what relation was Isaac II ( your GG-Grandfather ) to Isaac I who left the Victory to settle in Tenterfield ?

HOLY SHIT HE WAS NELSONS FIRST MATE?

HOLY SHIT, i had never taken that peice of information in before

So when exactly did he die ? To be 1st mate in 1805 he must have been around 30 ? If he had his house built in 1868, he would have been getting on in years. The date 1913 indicated a first publishing of his passed-on memoirs then ? Him not present...

Does your family have like 5 names and then just pick them out of a hat for each kid?

Shai Gar

we have a tradition of passing on names. for instance my son will probably be called "Prometheus Richard Whereat" (after the god) or "Noam Richard Whereat" (after chomsly) or "Nicholas Richard Whereat" (after both Machievelli or Ghosteh) or "Shaitan Richard Whereat"

and i do not know when Isaac died, but i know he lived a very very long life. but he certainly wasnt born before 1805

You're an author?

Shai Gar
27 Mar 2005, 09:28 AM
i have so far written 2 books, neither have been published. if i bother sending them in i will probably get published even if it is just the one copy for myself. but several people have expressed an interest in publishing my book on philosophy, but i dont think i have edited it enough so i wont let anyone touch it

Can we read it? :)

Shai Gar

how i just give you the gist of it? it isnt perfect yet and i dont want anyone reading this untill i have completed it

If you let us read it, the people here would probably pick it apart better than any editor ever could. Just think of us trashing your book as the first step into its becoming a philosophical classic.

..... screw the goddamned editors, i am probably doing a better job picking it to peices myself, i dumped a whole chapter last month to do with how we envision colour through the different universes.

but for pure pedantry, true, i couldnt go past this forum... when it gets to the point that i am happy with it, i will post it here for you people to correct the spelling and grammar

A long lost cousin sent my aunt a letter asking her about what she knew of our family's geneology. He stated in the letter that we were directly decended from a famous German general who fought in (or maybe just stationed in) the historically Polish areas and married (or had a child with) a Polish woman. There wasn't much more info than that except his last name was Hoffmann. My aunt sent the cousin a letter asking for more details. I hope it is Max Hoffmann, who planned the German victory over the Russians at Tannenberg in 1914, although this seems too recent knowing what I know about the Polish side of my family.

After Noam Chomsky? I'm impressed.

what do you mean after noam chomsky?

Birdsnest

"Noam Richard Whereat" (after chomsly) or "Nicholas Richard Whereat" (after both Machievelli or Ghosteh) or "Shaitan Richard Whereat"

Is this supposed to be Chomsky or Chomsly? Noam Chomsky is a free thinking writer that is way ahead of his time.

Here is his blog:

...

i know who noam chomsky is, i have most of his books, his site URL memorised, links to his blog and i read a fair few of his articles.

and yeah, i'd name my son after chomsky, and spell it the same way, but i would probably refer to my kid as gnome
