Earlier this evening Fx kindly updated itself to 1.02. It's rather more preferable to download; uninstall and install the new version; but since any way you do it, Mozilla makes it a surrealistic magical journey, I let it do it's thing.

After installing, shutting down for safety, and starting up with the usual trepidation: it was nice to discover no losses for a change. There was a gift of a desktop icon for the set-up process --- utterly pointless --- and there seems a slight speed gain; but the only downside was that on starting up, there was a message saying extensions had been disabled: customary, and it was true, but in the extensions manager they were all enabled.

So I disabled each, closed down Fx, and re-enabled them in batches of 6-8 ( closing Fx down each time ). All work, so good for Mozilla. Tomorrow the world !

You now have a new hobby for the rest of your life.

[ Re-installing Firefox. ]

Extensions: at the very minimum, install:

Add Bookmark Here --- very important
CuteMenus
DownloadTHEMall!
DragToTab
Flat Bookmark Editing --- stops the bookmark editor coming up
Image Zoom
Last Tab
Quick Note --- adds a four page memo you can paste in
Show Image
Allow Right Click

Bookmark Backup --- until you learn how to copy and save numerous copies of your profile

Stumbleupon
Customizable Toolbar Buttons

Adblock --- but you need to find out where to get the latest lists from to stop more and more ads. Fx does a lot, but not enough.

Menu Editor --- after a while you'll find the menus expand, so you need to place the open options ( in new tab etc. ) nearer the cursor.

Cookie Culler --- if you clear cookies, this enables you to protect those you know and love. Like intpcentral's little lot.

Those shouldn't do any harm ( there are about 300 out there, not all perfect ). Don't install them all at once --- one per session is recommended; but you can get away with more.

Go easy on themes --- there is nothing less thrilling than having downloaded dozens; then not being able to use them because your profile has gone west. Find out about profiles now. And back them up. Because things do go wrong without warning. Fx just doesn't start up.

FF just needs an about:config since it's native config page is so useless, and an RSS extension.

I prefer mozilla, overall. Until recently I was d/l a new nightly every week or so. Kinda fun. But 1.7.5 is mature enough that I think I'll stop the weekly reinstall for a while. :)

Ah. Great. I don't think I'm going to update yet though. Going by the version number it doesn't sound as though many important changes have been made yet.

I would like to see some more cosmetic updates to firefox. I think there is still a lot of potential work available with how the browser looks and feels. It would be a great feature to not have to restart firefox, for example, if you want to update your browsers skin.
