I'm thinking about relocating somewhere in the mainland U.S. I was wondering if there is any particlar cities that have been able to avoid the worst of the economic downturn and if anyone has found any informative articles about this subject. I'm open to anywhere except Colorado, California and Virginia (I'm looking for a fresh start). I have no education to speak of, so I am not looking for a particular field so much as general economic viability. Any ideas?

knoxville, TN and the surrounding areas has seemed to be doing alright. construction/trades are a bit slow, but most things just keep on existing as they always have...

Areas withstanding the economic downturn right now are actually pretty narrowminded.

Lots of rural areas have barely seen difference.

I always thought ranching in montana might be kind of fun for a bit.

That is kind of strange. TN always pops into my head when I think of random places to move. I've always had a good feeling about it passing through, and the climate seems bearable, too. I'll look into it. Thanks!

I can do narrow-minded. I think California is narrow-minded (just in the opposite way of a rural stereotype).

The culture of (most of) TN is kind of halfway between Appalachian and Midwestern, from what I've experienced, with just a bit of Southern thrown in. They have their fair share of cities, but there's also lots of nothing / farmland. As far as geography goes, it's a mix between rolling hills, flatland, and mountains. The Cumberland mountains are their own, though, and are different in several regards from the Appalachians proper. For example, there are some unusual plants and animals that you don't find in NC, VA, or WV.

I think the geography is just gorgeous. I lived in Norfolk for a few years and have passed through TN a couple of times. I was looking at places to live in a few cities out there, and it looks like a fairly cheap place. I'm still open to more options, though...

I kind of want to visit the Big Sky Country. :)

I just had a long phone conversation with my brother (INTJ) and realized he is my favorite person and I can't be too far away from him. He lives in San Diego and I'm thinking about AZ or maybe NM. I'm off to further research.

SoCal and AZ are just about the worst hit by the economic troubles. NM might not be as bad off. Besides, if you live there you could cook meth like on that one TV show.

D'oh! Maybe I'll just stay put (as methmaking might not be a good idea for me. Chemistry was the nail in the coffin of my time as a student, although I'd bet many meth cooks do not have a chemistry background).
