View Full Version : Favorite Computer Game

Computer and video games inhabit different yet overlapping territories in my mind. The seemed to need a different thread.
1. Myst! Hands down. First one is tops. I love the first book. I liked some aspects of Riven but thought the puzzles stood out too much, hated the structure of the gameplay. I love Exile, even though it was more like a vacation than a challenging game. Uru freaked me out (people! horrible strangers in my myst game! a fake human avatar! ugh!). And now I'm dreaming of a new computer so that I can play the newest newest one, made by the creators of Exile.
2. I have very fond memories of Odell Lake and the Oregon Trail (not the Oregon Trail II, which I found tedious).
3. Minesweeper, addictive as it is. I like it because practice brings a definite skill curve, motor coordination and pattern recognition and so on. And then exhaustion sets in. :}
4. Hearts.
5. Wolfenstein 3D. I think it's the only repetitive killing game that's ever held my interest for very long. ...I don't know why.
6. Day of the Tentacle. A later one (not sure how many there were...).

Sid Meir's Alpha Centauri, Rome: Total War, Halo (but only for PC and online), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War. Maybe in order, and probably more favorites.

Heh, actually I agree that there is a big difference from computer games and others. Computer games being far superior.

Hmm, okay, just like, absolute favorites. That might be tough, I have far to many games that I have never finished cause another came along. But there are some standouts.
Tie Fighter - It had many improvements over X-wing, plus you got to kick Rebel Scum instead of the benevolent Empire. It was before the days of Win95+, and I still think I have my DOS boot disk lying around, needed as much of the 640k as possible.
Total Annihilation - What made this game great was it's variety. From small peon KBots to huge lasers that killed things in one shot, to the Big Bertha which could shot across the map, It had a simple resource system as well.
The Incredible Machine - There were a couple of versions of this, I spent a lot of time with the second one. Basicaly it's a puzzle game where you have to create Rube Goldberg devices to complete a task.
Diablo II - So simple yet so complex. And there are always better items to find.
World of Warcraft - My current crack of choice. I can group and play with friends, or go on my own and not have much of a problem. I find it a very engrossing game.
There are others, like Civ II for example. But for some reason when I reach the mid/end game, I lose interest. It's like, I know I will win, I just have to play it all out, but I don't. I was addicted to Quake in college freshman year. It's actually how I met most of my friends at college to begin with. It appealed to the competitor in me to rip the guy across the hall from me up with a nail gun, and then taunt him. I still find FPS games to be good for when I just want to blow someone up, but my skillz aren't as good as they used to be.
And I am still waiting for a game that combines Tie Fighters excelent design with droolworthy eye candy. Someday.

Personally, loved Baldur's Gate 2 + Throne of Bhaal expansion and Planescape:Torment on the RPG side of things, and Total Annihilation was in my opinion the greatest RTS in history, but in sheer hours of my life eaten away it had to be Alpha Centauri. I could have accomplished so much more in life if not for that damned game.

I'v been seriously considering buying WoW. I just don't know if it would be worth it.
I haven't played too many computer games beacuse they are inferior to video games.
I guess the list goes:
All the sim cities
Diablo I/II
Unreal tournament
Starcraft
Worms Armageddon
That is all I can think of for now.

Adventure (the Atari 2600 game with the dragons that look like ducks)
Ultima VII (both parts)
Sim City series (especially 3000 and 4)
Zork series
Millipede
Most of these seriously date me. I don't like most modern games. They're too violent. And I don't like on-line games because they involve multiple players and (gasp!) competition. But I'm just weird.

Well the first month I got it, I dubbed it the greatest game I ever played. That's a pretty bold statement from me. It's losing it's luster a little bit though.....but I think it's also because I have so much crap on my mind about school. It's hard for me to relax and just game it up.

Those two are definitley in my top five. Man I love Planscape.
I also like old games, because of the nostalgia factor. Doom, Civilization 1, The first Comman and Conquer, Starcraft, Quake series, NWN, Morrowind are also in there somewhere.
I'm poor now, so I haven't bought any games in a few years.

Half-Life: Counterstrike (The original, and before the cheaters) It was so near multiplayer perfection it hurts to dream of it.

It's like CS but without the teams. I tried CS for a bit but most of the time I felt like killing my own team members, so that didn't work out too well.

The Quest For Glory series.
It was awesome because there were 5 games that spanned like, 10 years. It was like Kings Quest, but with charecter states, fighting, spells, etc. After you completed each game, you saved your charecter and imported it, with your stats and items, right into the next game.
I played the first on when I was like 9, and finished the last game in the series just a few years ago. All with my original charecter: Wizard Man :)

Starcraft - RTS perfection. PERFECTION.
Marathon (mac) - The perfect storybound entry to FPSs.
Halo (Xbox) - Open ended gameplay.
Myth I - The strategy curve that could kill.
Diablo II - Good brainless action rpg fun.
Escape Velocity (mac) - Freelance fighter all over the galaxy
*edit*
Unreal Tournament - kicked so much ass.
Combat

Civ 3 and Quake 3 basically.
Never play any RTS games. I prefer to grab a cup of coffee, sit back and take a good look at the map and plot my invasion very carefully before I strike. It seems that plotting the invasion is even more fun than actually executing it

-DOOM --the original one from WAY back in 91'-ish
-Oregon Trail
-Chip's Challenge
(mind, these are favorites from my past...I don't have any favorites for more recent games).
hmm, could be a long list,
Transport tycoon is definately up there. i played alot or RRT and CIV1 in my early days but i think TT beats them both as my favourite game of that type.
for RTS's the original command and conqure is still the best. I liked ra2 imensely as i believe they managed to capture the feeling of the original with better balance. I have too many fond memories of playing c&c in highschool and running helicoptors full of engineers into the enemy base.
FPS's i think i'd have to go with CS, specificially beta 5 back before the half-life netcode improvements when i could knife 3 people on dialup without being hit *evil laugh* those were the days, having said that Cs:source is sexy as. I also think call of duty is very good, never liked mohaa or battle field much.
I'm supprised no one has mentioned the dig of beneath a steel sky, i thought those games were great!
haven't put in any rpgs but.. meh.... there's so many good ones...

I have always had a weak spot for the Civilization games. I used to stay up all night in the computer lab at college playing it when I had a paper to write. Of course, some of the real-time strategy games are more advanced now, but there's nothing like the old-fashioned turn based stuff for me.

It seems to be a cyclical thing, one MMORPG "killing off" another. I still remember when everybody thought Ultima Online was the shit, and then Everquest came along.
