View Full Version : Computers--Athlon 64 motherboards? (x86 gurus step inside..)

I'm looking to build an Athlon 64-based system soon. I was almost ready to buy a SiS chipset-based board, until I discovered the Serial ATA RAID support for SiS chipsets is only in beta for Linux
So the alternative I think is the nForce or K8T800 VIA chipset. I'm leaning more towards the VIA chipset I think, even though I hate VIA (my existing Athlon 900 misbehaves with one of my soundcards, which after further research the problem is the VIA chipset, not the card).
So anyone have any thoughts? (specific motherboard types to stay away from? good experiences in Linux and Windows with any particular boards?)

LOL, guess I definitely posted this in the wrong forum :D

Oh, I dunno. These philosophical conundrums are good for us.
Not techie enough to offer advice: still, it's kind of weird that all these things still play up with each other. You'd think by now the comp industry could fix on some sort of standards for co-ordinating stuff
Good luck, and anyone who likes Linux can't be bad.
( You didn't say which type: even that can make a difference... I like SUSE myself: insofar as I have only experimented at all with Linux ).

I love SuSE! I use SuSE 9.1 on my work laptop (and SuSE 9.0 here on my home PC... just waiting for the mass hardware upgrade before I go to 9.1, where I might check out the 64-bit version since I'll have an Athlon 64)
Former RedHat dweeb... still use RH at work (we're pretty much standardized on it), never used Gentoo, but I'm partial to most Linux distros no matter what or where they are ;)

I hang around Lockergnome for computer stuff ( although only posting in the politics&religion forum to annoy the American Patriotic Right ): they've got a Linux forum, or you could post in Hardware ( if registered ). You can't really cross-post in both ( although I did a few days ago: I could use a new mouse, but it had b******** up my keyboard, so I could surf here, but not post... )
Lockergnome Forums (http://help.lockergnome.com/index.php?)
Or as well I could ask someone there for advice if you like ( one of the mods, likes Linux ).

Listen to hyperion. The nForce 3 250 chipset is freaking awesome. I don't have it, but I did read a nice review which i would link you to if they'd let me connect to their page. They had it ona nice $99 epox motherboard, which is very sweet. Great audio and gigabit LAN on board.
I would build your computer at newegg.com, i was able to build one based around an Athlon 64 for about $630. here is the newegg link fo the mobo i just talked about http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-123-219&depa=0

I ended up building an Asus K8V-SE Deluxe (VIA K8T800) mobo. I am not using the SATA RAID stuff, although I think SuSE might have support for it (since it includes libata), but it works fantastic.
SuSE 9.1 64-bit is a little faster than 32-bit too. WinXP Professional works great too. I had to blast my SuSE Linux install when I installed XP Pro though... XP is really anal about its partitioning. This gave me the opportunity to install SuSE 64-bit (x86_64)
