It's the Grand-Daddy tournament in college basketball. A very exciting game against St. Joe's; a 3 pointer in the last second decided the game.

When Michigan won it last year, I refused to even watch any of the games despite the fact that I am a big Michigan fan.

The NIT gets no respect. The NIT champ, IMHO, is probably a Top 25 team that never got going during the regular season.

Not that big if you cheer for Cornell in hockey :thumbdow: Yeah, I would have gone to an Ivy League school too if I had been motivated enough to write the essays.

Have you ever watched an Ivy League football game? It's just too difficult to be a Cornell football fan.
I didn't go to Michigan because it was too close to home and I needed to get away from the overbearing mother. I didn't go to Northwestern because I knew I couldn't cheer against Michigan Football.
When I was a freshman, Cornell played at Michigan during winter break and I went to the game. I didn't know what to do with myself. Luckily, it ended in a tie.
By the way, Michigan stole 95% of their cheers from Cornell back in the early '90's. They just added more profanities.

Anyone watching the NIT game should have been watching the baby bulls win their 8th straight game. (In OT, against saint lebron, no less)

Did Cornell have the phone ringing in the press box too? That one was always my favorite.

Do you mean:
"Hey, insert opposing goalie's name, your mom called, she said YOU SUCK!"
"Hey, insert opposing goalie's name, your boyfriend called, he said ________!"

Heh heh. That brings back some memories. I think I was aware that many of the cheers were "borrowed" although I wasn't sure exactly from what school, though.

We used to do that sort of thing at football games (not that university football in Canada is at the same league). That was a lot of fun. We'd buy the programs and shout pretty funny things at players from the opposing teams. Usually they would laugh along with us.

I guess the story is that Michigan played at Cornell back in the early '90's and the Michigan fans there were impressed and amused by the chants and brought them back to Ann Arbor. Our behavior got a little better after my sophmore year when a Harvard player got nailed with a large fish and we got threatened with a minor penalty for having several thousand people yelling "The ref fucks sheep!" They started throwing people out of the rink left and right.

Now it seems like a lot of the CCHA teams have copied off of Michigan. I remember reading a story about Western Michigan's fans and similar cheers. The author credited neither Michigan nor Cornell.
