This morning I was awoken by a call from my boss, who had been contacted by the FBI. They have a search warrant for the server upon which INTP central is stored, along with all log files and vbulletin IP address records which we store.

They say that they will not interfere with INTP Central itself more than minimally during this time, so if we are down temporarily thanks to this for 30 minutes a bit later today, please excuse this.

I'm not sure exactly what they are persuing with this search, and when I went in they told me very little besides persenting me with the warrant and telling me they would be back at a certain time, at which they would wish access to the server and it's contents, or they would seize the server and take the contents itself.

They said I could post here when I asked, providing I did not specify their names nor many other details.

What the fuck....

If you're telling the truth, heero, which I'm sure you are, I bet I know why. . .

Certain young teenagers from "Down Under" have posted *a lot* of anti-American setiments, including things that could be interpreted as threats against the US, terrorism threats, hatred toward the US capitalism, etc.

That does suck though.

(EDIT) OR maybe, the FBI read my "profile" (http://forums.intpcentral.com/showpost.php?p=67851&postcount=37) about that silly teenager from "Down Under" that was posted a long while ago, and now wants to recruit me to "catch" others like him. ;)

(EDIT #2) THIS (http://intuitivecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=352) might also have something to do with it, if NCentral is hosted on the same server, which I think heero said it was . . . BAD SG!

Well, at first when I read this, I thought that heero's boss was playing an April Fools joke on him and not heero playing one on us. So yes, I am skeptical. However, some INTP's see a lot of injustice connected with authority and may tend to believe such as privacy concerns seem to go along with this.

It's not obstruction of justice as I asked them (I spoke via phone this morning, when I got to work they had left) if I could reveal that we had been searched on forums, and they said it was fine, as they weren't going to tell me _what_ they were searching for. http://www.aegis.com/ni/law/fedapp/8D/1991/1991C081507.html

apparently 14 years ago Steve Burns was a legal counseller

[7] Counsel who presented argument on behalf of the Appellant was Steven D. Burns of Lincoln, Nebraska.

within 14 years it is concievable that he is able to become a judge.

and another search came up with this:

http://www.journalstar.com/articles/2004/10/23/local/doc41795cd21deb5879015801.txt
Lancaster County District Judge Steven D. Burns is considering whether to find a Lincoln man guilty of a felony or misdemeanor in the 2002 motor vehicle death of a Kearney woman.

and in this nebraskan government page his name comes up several times
http://www.lincoln.ne.gov/cnty/clerk/agenda/1997/ag9705a.htm

and here is the most damning evidence of all.
http://court.nol.org/addresses/dist_addr.htm
Lancaster
Steven D. Burns
575 S 10th St.
Lincoln, NE 68508
402-441-7605 (ph)
402-441-6190 (fax)

so my guess is that it is not a hoax, because i doubt heero is willing to do the jail time for forging a judges signature, fraud, and impersonating an officer of the court.

In any event, this was thought up by myself, and approved by admins/mods last night. We thought it would be quite funny and righteous. We considered closing it down for a half a day to make a point, but decided against it :)

The fact that it was April Fool's and you had a search warrant on that day made me very suspicious, also since you called it a subpoena. The warrant looked pretty believable... but still possible to have been edited. Also, a violation of privacy is one of the greatest fears for INTPs, so good April Fool's material there. I am such a tool. I always fall for these kind of things, especially if I cannot see the prankster in person. At first I did think it was an April Fool's joke, but heero seemed serious. I even PMed him apologizing for questioning him. I saw some silly April Fools things on other sites, but bringing out the search warrant was great. This was a good one because, as was mentioned, we INTPs dislike authorities and jealously guard our privacy.

The techno boffins can correct me if I'm wrong here, but I doubt that deleting stuff from a hard drive would completely delete it from your computer.

It's my understanding that you need special scrubbing software. I once drafted an IT confidentiality agreement for a Govt department here, and deletion of confidential data came up as an issue. I was told that pressing the "delete" button doesn't completely get rid of it.

You have to scrub it, hence why the FBI would confiscate equipment to recover deleted files. There are ways to scrub things, and I do.

Yea, I actually felt slightly bad after you appologized crule because it was like "wow, he's appologizing to me for fooling him..." but at the same time it was somewhat humorous. Once again-I thank everyone for being a good sport about it, heh.

good sport indeed, i would have dobbed you into the judge when i called.

and what do we need to recover files that are only deleted, and what do we need to scrub them

For scrubbing you need two electromagnets and a little juice.

For reading deleted files, you need a needle, and maybe if you make whirring sounds loud enough and pretend you're a hard disk you'll start spitting out your precious lost data :)

(All kidding aside, a file scrubber will do, just google, and it's forensics to recover deleted data...if there haven't been anymore write passes (depending on filesystem) it might not be hard, but chances are it will be. Unless you're a Unix guy and using Union Filesystem, or a WORM system :) )

Oh-My comments weren't meant for you, I was referring to everyone else. I know very well you wouldn't have hesitated to try to have me arrested.

:D yes but only in a good way :D

and i would have posted bail.. if they didnt set the bail at more than 10 dollars AUD

Always a good thing to know, I suppose. In the case I had been arrested, I guess I would've hoped for the sudden economic collapse of the country so that the dollar would be worth nothing suddenly in comparison to the AUD (after they'd set my bail, of course).

dont worry, you have bush as a president, the total sudden economic collapse of your country is not that far away

Like the aborigines who's stolen land you were raised on, and are squatting at this very moment?

Or maybe the hordes of refugees Oz has been shitting on for year (like since the 90s)

What about the unsustainable use of the word "fuck"? :P

Get real man, we (Westerners) are all the same, Oz is the States on a smaller scale.

To the risk of really making Shai a terrorist, I will agree.

Glad to see people outside of Australia know about the shit that goes on here :)

Oh and you had me there Heero, but I wasn't online until after the penny dropped....

To be totally truthful, the only way to erase the information on a drive is to take the drive apart and destroy each platter physically.

Anything else, such as magnetism, file-shredding, immersing in swamp-water or using Windows will probably work, but labs can still find what they want if they spend enough time.

Besides which you've still got the problem that I download the entire website every 12 hours, so there's always a copy somewhere.

It was a great gag!

I loved watching people squirm :-)

I was reading it yesterday as it happened, and I would say I was about 50% taken in by it. INTP paranoia has a way of canceling out INTP skepticism!

Now, why is it I am worried about the Boy Who Cried Wolf syndrome...

Besides, if people type FBI enough times in posts they are bound to notice this site sooner or later. Although I remember reading that the FBI and CIA computer systems weren't even wired for the internet until very recently...

ECHELON is the largest electronic spy network in history, run by the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, capturing telephone calls, faxes and e-mails around the world. ECHELON is estimated to intercept up to 3 billion communications every day.

Carnivore is a name given to a system implemented by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that is analogous to wire tapping except in this case, it is email that is being tapped instead of telephone conversations. It is a form of policeware.

What are aborigines?

Oh, you mean Indigenous Australians. You nearly confused me there with your unconventional dialect.

We all know why they are here. I say we jump Shai Gar and hand him over to prevent further trouble.

Looking for Australia based volunteers.

I can drive up there. It'll take me a few days though.

Just kidding I don't hate you. I figured it was a joke, because there wasn't a valid reason for them searching us.

Since when does the FBI require a valid reason?

I seriously hope they don't intercept MSN conversations.

And if they do, they don't pass them on to the British authorities...

Edit:

Various sources claim that these states have positioned electronic-intercept stations and deep-space satellites to capture most radio, satellite, microwave, cellular and fibre-optic communications traffic.
