The definition of a Philologist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philologist) is someone interested in studying ancient texts......

I am familiar with the schoolboy one.
I got asked in year 8 if I "mass debated".
I didn't get it for a whole two minutes. Puns aren't really my thing.

I had an ex who recounted the story that:
He knew someone at school with the last name "bates",... & would phone him at home,.. & when the guys mother answered the phone,.. would ask
"can I please talk to Master Bates"
apparently she thought he was being very formal & polite,... & it took her months before she caught on......
(whether or not this really happened I have no clue).

J.R.R. Tolkien was a philologist specializing in the Anglo-Saxon language and literature, but he loved all Nordic languages. His Elvish was based on Finnish.
I liked this quote from the Wikipedia entry:
Philology always leads to crime.
Eugène Ionesco, The Lesson (1951)

Actually, a philologist is not only a scholar who studies texts, but one who specialises in linguistics. A bibliophile loves books and/or collects them. There is a sharp distinction there because like the average bookseller, some bibliophiles may collect books but not love books at all, and some others may only collect antiquarian books of monetary value. And some love and collect books individually and collectively, and love collecting every book they can get their hands on, regardless of how valueless they are to most people and booksellers*. Although I don't go for newer books --- last 40 years --- much.
*Booksellers do not qualify as humans. More books have been lost to posterity through their agency than through barbarian burnings. Last night I helped take down a local bookfair, and the dumpsters outside had unsold books poured inside.
Not in the least unbitter
