Nay, my friend. Tora Bora has lots of action and chaos! It's caught in a unique moment.
I'd like to suggest Cuba sometime in the future (assuming tourism is allowed soon...good chance, I think)
Then again, Bora Bora has the mellow, relaxing beauty going for it... :)

Damn, it is tempting. At the moment I can't say though.

As tempting as it is, with flights that look like they run at $1,200+ (at least from the West Coast), this is somewhere I'll probably save for when I'm old and can't do much else than sit on my ass.

It's in the Southern Hemisphere, so December would be toward the beginning of the summer there. But, it seems like May - October is really the time to be there. It's the dry season, and the temperature is between 24 and 28 C (like around 79 F). Between November and April, it apparently rains a ton and there are occasionally severe storms (including cyclones (aka hurricanes)).
I would be game to go sometime between September and October, or perhaps for two months from 9/1 - 10/31.
I'll have to look into the exchange rates.

No. My plan is to squander a bunch of money, and perhaps mitigate said expense by taking my laptop and logging a couple of hours of online poker here and there.

I suspect the opposite -- he's getting a kickback from the resort for luring us there.

That picture was from the Four Seasons, which is one of the more expensive resorts at Bora Bora (though the irony of the name almost makes it worth the extra money). Here's a rough guide to the layout of the resorts at Bora Bora:
http://www.intpcentral.com/uploads/boraaerial.gif
It appears the most baller part of Bora Bora is the stretch between the Four Seasons and the Intercontinental Thalasso. If I'm right, that's on the east side of the atoll, and thus sunsets will occur to the west, over the main island and the lagoon. However, according to the TahitiTravel (http://www.tahiti-explorer.com/frames/bora-index.html) site, all of these resorts are very expensive, and have a few shortcomings. It seems from that site that the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort (http://www.sofitel.com/gb/hotel-0564-sofitel-bora-bora-marara-beach-resort/index.shtml) is the best all around, mid-priced resort, and it does have over water bungalows (mandatory for me). It also underwent an $18 million renovation in 2007, so it's probably way swanky and up to date. It appears the rates range from $359/night for the luxury garden view bungalows to $730/night for the best of the overwater bungalows (I call that one). I think the bungalows can each house up to three guests. Note that this is less than half the price of the St. Regis Bora Bora (which is probably where Helios will be, just coincidentally, at the time of the meet-up).
It seems, too, that there's another nearby Sofitel facility (http://www.sofitel.com/gb/hotel-2755-sofitel-bora-bora-motu-private-island/index.shtml), and guests at one are able to make use of the amenities of either.

Why'll Helios be there? As a guest or working there?
Hmmm. Would be swell to work there.

There is a solar eclipse on July 11th 2010. It's a total eclipse for Easter Island... perhaps it is for Bora Bora as well. Just a thought.
Add: Looks like it will be very near total for Bora Bora.

It's tempting. I'll be on an 8 month holiday at that time and I'll probably be in Chile or Argentina in May but flights cost about $1500 (Canadian) so I'm not sure that it would be worth it.
If other tropical islands are possibilities I could definitely meet in Fernando de Noronha (http://images.google.ae/images?hl=en&um=1&ei=dRs6St6xBsSEsAbYgN29CQ&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=fernando+de+noronha&spell=1) or Ilha Grande (http://images.google.ae/images?hl=en&ei=DBo6SoGLGqGsjAfs3KGrDQ&resnum=0&q=ilha%20grande&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi) though.

I wish I were surprised that you'd rather go to the capital city of an international oppressor rather than visit the people of French Polynesia, who have been colonized and oppressed by the very same smelly, rude Frenchmen who inhabit Paris, but such a Eurocentric, pro-establishment attitude is probably pretty standard for "communists." Maybe they can use your tourist dollars to fund more nuclear testing in the Polynesian atolls.
Metropolis > sand
Yes, I'd love to stay in an over-sewer bungalow a few blocks off the Champs-Elysees.

We need to try and figure out a date for the meet-up. I'm thinking 10/1 - 10/8 could be good (people could obviously stay for shorter durations within that week, if they preferred), but perhaps something like 8/1 - 8/8 would be more convenient for more people. If nobody has any great ideas about this, I'm just going to pick a week and that will be that.
If I lacked a superego I would sell my house and if necessary one of my children to finance such a trip.
I'm willing to sell one of Ivy's kids to go. Just saying.

You're a mathematician, no? You don't need a retirement account, you'll be locked away in an institution after years upon years of failed attempts to solve the Reimann hypothesis.
Unfortunately I'm too poor. Unless anyone can suggest ways of hitch hiking there for free.
