I had to go back to the old forum to hunt this down, so I thought I'd post it here:

Ooh, I don't like this one too much. Nevertheless, I took it.

http://similarminds.com/images/5w4.gif http://similarminds.com/images/6w7-mean.gif

5w4 is my actual type, but I certainly don't favor intuition over reason. Artistic intellectual? True enough, I guess. I'm more intellectual than artistic, though I am pretty serious about the piano.

But what I don't understand is Similar Minds' idea about "mean types." How does having a strong tendency towards type 9 make me unconsciously a 6w7?

Let me rephrase that. I understand it, but I don't think their theory (which they explain here (http://sminds.com/mean.html)) has any basis in fact. They think that types 1-4 are more socialistic and types 6-9 are more individualistic. Yet type 4 has often been called "the individualist" by Enneagram experts. And I would hardly say that a type-6 is more individualistic than socialistic, considering their unique disposition towards authority. As Riso puts it in Personality Types, "Sixes want to feel protected and secure by having something bigger and more powerful than they guiding them." Individualistic? I think not.

I think I might be a 5w4 also. They seem related.

I may be serene, but I am not orderly. Which is strange, cause I went against order in nearly every question.

Okay, the first try didn't work, so it's plain text time!

Conscious: 5w6
Unconscious: 6w7

5w6 desc:
You are more interested in intellectual pursuits than social activity. You have no concern for what is popular or socially appropriate. You are very introverted. Be on guard against too little physical activity or not doing things you want to do.

6w7 desc:
You are more prone to anger than fear. You are introverted and indecisive. When you like someone you tend to hide it. You have low self control. You tend to be unfocused. You are open minded and tend to be messy. You are a sceptic.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I'll have to think on this, but it seems to be about 50% hit-and-miss at first glance. I'll post up more, after I have thought this over.

I am.

Riso is a shitbag.I'll give you the benefit of the doubt - I don't think Riso's a shitbag at all. But I'd love to hear you out.

What do you think makes a Six? Are they more or less attached to establishments and people than, say, a Four? And do you agree with Similar Minds's theory of "mean type"?

I took the test again, and it says I'm a 5w6 sx, and my unconcious score came out as 7w6 instead of 7w8 this time. I think I probably change a lot.

I think its fairly accurate.
My V mean was 3.07 and H mean was 5.36.

5w6: You are more interested in intellectual pursuits than social activity. You have no concern for what is popular or socially appropriate. You are very introverted. Be on guard against too little physical activity, or not doing things you want to do.

I think this test tends to be pretty mood dependent... normally this one just puts me as a flat 5, but on occasion this (and most other tests) peg me as a 5w4, though on one particularly bad day it came out 4w5.

I know a lot of people look down on this particular test, but in the case of some people (ie my significant other) it gives a more accurate picture than the MBTI (where she scores as basically an XXFX)

http://www.9types.com
and
http://www.enneagraminstitute.com/descript.asp
both have some fairly interesting descriptions (the latter has an eerily accurate description of the pro's and cons of my current relationship as well)

Yeah, no single enneagram test is going to determine your type.
You have to do about 4 or 5 and get the consistent "vibe" coming from one of the nine points.
It took me ages to nail down my type, but now I am confident I am 5w4.
If you really want to nail it down, the absolute BEST I can recommend is this test (http://www.eclecticenergies.com/enneagram/). If you're still not sure about wings or variants check Tom Condon's analysis (http://www.thechangeworks.com/ennprimer/fineenn9styls1.html). I guarantee you won't find any better enneagram resources at this point in time.

I also have a theory about enneagram type distribution.
This only applies to Australian population. From what I have read the American population is similar.

The most common types are 6, 9 and (in the case of women) 2.
Sixes are everywhere. You can see it from the way they act. Prudent, not giving too much away, a kind of "spiky" awareness of they're environment, and anything that will cause them potential harm. That's because 6s value personal security more than anything else. One aphorism that applies to sixes is "safety in numbers". This is because groups (social, political, religious, even just a bunch of good friends) with similar views provide their constituents with protection from the world around them. Consequently issues of loyalty and betrayal are paramount to sixes. That why a six is sometimes called the "loyalist". Not that other types don't display this behaviour, but it is particularly salient in sixes.
Nines are also common. They would be the most apathetic type. They are very good at expending minimal amount of energy for maximum results. They act as good mediators in conflict, and are able to transcend their own prejudices for the sake of harmony. And let's face it, in a topsy-turvy world we need people who can bring the social milieu to some kind of equilibrium.
Male twos are as rare as hen's teeth, but female twos are quite common. A typical two is an example of a wet, empathetic, caring counseller or social worker, or carer or teacher. Most of these professions constitute largely women. 6s and 9s I think are evenly split genderwise.

Conversely I think there are more male 5s and 8s.

Just read the types' and wings' descriptions and figure it out on your own... if you think you have no wing, you are probably looking at the wrong type. It is very easy to mistake a Nine for a Five for instance, or a six for a five or for a nine, because there are many similarities when you are NT especially. An NT Nine is very very easy to be mistaken as a Five, because the overall Nine description covers the Feeler Nines too, for example, so an NT 9 might feel really close to the 5 description. Tests can be wrong. In the wrong mood, I have scored 4w5. On the wrong test, I have scored 3w2. Nevermind tests. The enneagram can't be figured out this way, in my opinion... read descroptions of the types you are wondering about, the more the better, and observe the people you consider "typical" of those types. Just check who you relate to mostly. (No need to say you have to compare with how you *are*, not how you want to be...) Usually I get strong vibes from people of the same type as me, I guess that must stand for everyone...

What's with the high clamness number. You would think if my anxiety is so high that would be much different. I attribute it to the calm facade i put forth toward others. Why? Because the test asks how OTHERS perceive me. Just because others perceive me as calm doesn't mean I am lol. But a facade seems very unINTP. However, it's very unintentional I can't even explain it. All I know is I'm wired inside but everyone says I'm calm all the time, so, who the hell knows ehhh?

Well I took the test posted and all it came out with is that I am a strong Type 1 (Perfectionist). I must be "perfect and good" to be happy.

I'm not sure what the "variant" means or how I work this out.

Another online test (Riso) showed the same type 1 and described this as the "Rational idealistic" type.

From what I've read, your wing isn't necessarily your second-ranked Enneagram type. It's based on your #1 type, and supposedly there's two separate wings of that type. You would be whatever wing is ranked higher of those two. Or so I understand it.

So according to this (http://www.enneagraminstitute.com/TypeOne.asp), Ones have either a Nine-Wing or a Two-Wing.

As for what a wing is, it's apparently a variant of the type. Similarly to how several INTPs would vary depending on the strengths of their preferences.

But I'm hardly an expert. In that I've been reading about it for less than 24 hours. ;P So someone please correct me if I'm horribly off.

After taking both the similarminds and the eclecticenergies enneagram tests, I agree that the one at eclecticenergies is far more accurate. Better at determining the variant too (if you take that test anyways).

Most enneagram tests say I'm a 6, but that one said I was a 5 with balanced wings, which I have suspected for a while.

"Nines have problems seeing themselves because their sense of self is relatively undefined. They have developed their capacity to be unselfconscious and receptive to others and therefore tend to see themselves in all of the types and in none very strongly. Moreover, there is also a tendency for female Nines to misidentify themselves as Twos and for male Nines to misidentify themselves as Fives; see Understanding the Enneagram (revised edition, 2000) for comparisons between these types."
Was hoping to find the specific description about distinguishing 5s and 9s, which I did read once but don't remember, but it's only in the book I guess. Anyway the funny thing is I am a woman but I've never thought I was a 2, and have sometimes tested as a 5 - what does that mean I wonder? I'm quite sure I'm a 9w1 though - maybe just looking for allies :) I like your little graphic - "They can sleep their lives away". This is absolutely true of me! Constantly trying to force myself into action.

But I don't really value harmony, I can play devil's advocate all day. Many times however, I just don't want to deal with other people's crap so I go along with the unimportant decisions.

I always get five or four, but they are usually with equal or very close strength.
Next in strenght is always 9,6, or 3.
I never get the "w" type, though. How do you get that? (e.g.5w4)

I always get Five first with Four either second or third. I'm pretty much textbook 5w4. On the other hand, I tend to score too close to the border of P/J, which has always bothered me about the MBTI.

Um, no. Wings for a 5 are either 4 or 6. You need to figure if either 4 or 6 is higher.

I usually test as a 5 with 9 coming in second. But that doesn't make the 9 a wing.

Is a wing either of the two numbers that precede and follow the original #?

Yes. Your wing will be +1 or -1 of your type. In the case of a 1 the wing could be 2 or 9. (and for a 9 it could be 8 or 1)... etc.

i think the enneagram is more useful if you list your second highest type (vs wing)... wing is debated even among enneagram authors, two of the most prominent don't use wings.

Interesting... this test tells me I'm likely to be a 9/sp. The sp seems dead on but the 9 doesn't. If I understand nines correctly they are supposed to be driven by a desire to keep peace and harmony directly around them, and that's just not me. The summary for nines above does fit me somewhat, though; I do have a strong need to be internally peaceful lest I be stressed out, and it's also true that I sometimes make an effort to be easy to get along with, but the latter is the result of much pondering and a conscious, deliberate choice, not a basic drive. More often I just don't care about things enough for them to get on my nerves though. So either I'm not a nine, or I've misunderstood the e9 profile. Perhaps someone can bring me some further clarity on this?

Way back I delved deeply into what enneagram profiles I could find on the Internet, and came to the conclusion that 5w6 matches me best.

Stability results were high which suggests you are very relaxed, calm, secure, and optimistic..

Orderliness results were low which suggests you are overly flexible, improvised, and fun seeking at the expense too often of reliability, work ethic, and long term accomplishment.

Extraversion results were low which suggests you are very reclusive, quiet, unassertive, and secretive.

trait snapshot:
secretive, reclusive, messy, disorganized, introverted, unassertive, rarely worries, dislikes large parties, does not like to fit in, does not need to control others, solitary, ambivalent about chaos, tough, leisurely, does not respect authority, not aggressive, observer, abstract, impractical, dislikes leadership, daydreamer, bizarre, does not make friends easily, not a perfectionist, suspicious, rarely irritated, strong physical instincts, unsympathetic at times, risk taker ;), submissive, weird, sarcastic, strange

Thanks for that again, but I have taken this test at least 3 times this past year and been on every forum. My results are 100% accurate. I'm a 5w6 without a doubt in my mind. In fact, I live inside my mind and every social interaction is forced. But, I have been working on my weakness for about one year. It took me one year to register for this site after lurking around off and on. I know my self and have no confusions at all about my type. Famous 5's: Albert Einstein, T.S. Eliot, Bobby Fischer, William Colby,Vladimir Lenin, Stanley Kubrick, Michelle Pfeiffer (hot), Keanu Reeves (WTF), and Ebenezer Scrooge. :)

The testing for variants is poopy. Looks like everybody here who scored 5 or 9, which are withdrawn E-types, also got sp as their primary variant. If you're withdrawn, it doesn't necessarily make you sp first. I'm a 9 and introverted, but I'm sx/so. Otherwise, good test.

I don't know whether I'd be 8w7 or 8w9, though. Both of them look like pretty accurate descriptions of me at different times, so I'm not sure how I'd choose.

Edit: Which test are you guys taking to get the two external and interal resaults, as well as, say, the 5w4, 9w2, etc. I just got a plain 'ol 5.

The variant section seems a bit suspect. sx is considered to be (assertive, intense). sp is considered to be (withdrawn, security seeking). I consider myself to be intense, but withdrawn. I am far from security seeking. I can occasionally be assertive, but I'm generally laidback.

I also hated the endless string of questions on danger, awareness of bodily harm, and all that. What was that about? :wtf:

I have felt rather dubious about my Enneagram type for sometime. I couldn't find any real consistencies in identifying myself as a specific type. Here is my current result from the similiarminds test: 5 sp/so/sx with followed by 9, 7 and 6. Needless to say, I was a bit flustered with these results. I noticed on the first couple of pages that Serotonin posted links that appeared foreign. I began to scour the information within those realms feverously. Alas, I believe I have found my type! Thank you, Serotonin. With out further adieu, I am confident I am a 4w5 sx/sp/so.

I get different results on this test. So far I'm not as convinced of its meaning. Can Anxiety be a personality type? I have had an anxiety problem, but now have little happy pills. It's something I work with and could never identify it as me.

One time I came out:
2 Helpfulness (80%)
5 Detachment (74%)
6 Anxiety (72%)

Another time:
6 Anxiety (77%)
1 Perfectionism (76%)
2 Helpfulness (71%)

I'm going to guess that I'm a 2X6 since they made the cut both times. It really doesn't make much sense to me because I don't see these categories as fundamental to personality, or all inclusive, but as different external behaviors that result from types of social conditioning. It seems more focused on surface behaviors than coherent psychological frameworks. Can anyone explain it to me more clearly?

Yes, it's possible.

(I'm also an Enneagram Type Seven, sexual variant.)

Wow, okay. I wondered because they seem sort of contradictory to me.
Some would argue that it's not possible for an introvert to be a Seven, but *shrug*

I'm conflicted over whether I'm an introvert or extravert (I consider myself an ambivert)*, but Seven fits me better than anything else. (My second highest is Five.)

*I mean within the context of MBTI. In my day to day life, it's not something I concern myself with.

All of the Sevens on INTPc that I'm aware of (there are several of us) seem to be somewhat undecided/conflicted concerning our introversion/extraversion.

What it signifies, to me, is that MBTI and the Enneagram do not cover the entire personality terrain (nor do they perfectly correlate with each other).

Yes, I'm pretty down the middle when it comes to E/I. But I test more often as INTP. I think you are right about there possibly being more than just I/E preference.
