Just read an article reporting that 90% of US bills carry traces of cocaine (http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/08/14/cocaine.traces.money/index.html). If someone asked me to guess the percentage before I read this article, I would have guessed much lower; then again, the spreading effects of counting machines, ATMs, etc. make the 90% figure seem plausible. Interesting.

I've always heard that it was 80% of Ones. And no, I don't have any scientific verification of that number; it just gets tossed arounsd.

80% of the Ones is probably meth instead!
Zuo, who spoke about his research at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society on Sunday, found that $5, $10, $20 and $50 bills were more likely to be positive for cocaine than $1 bills.
"Probably $1 is a little too less to purchase cocaine," Zuo said "I don't know exactly [why]. It's an educated guess."

Followed closely by what? Sweat? Blood? Semen?
Of it all: so what?

Also, not mentioned in the article: strippers and coke go together like MacGuffin and gin. Guess what else can be found on bills, especially $1's and $5's.... (hmmm, wonder what the percentage actually is).

It's times like these I wish everyone in the country had OCD so I could take the problem off their hands.

I always heard 30% although I am pretty sure for dollars in Florida, 90% is closer (for coke and stripper crotch sweat).

I'd prefer the ones with cocaine. I'm not sure, but I don't think there's a big market for stripper crotch sweat.

I would think half of these "cocaine" bills came from the 70's, when middle class house wives were snorting it at PTA meetings.

Since no one has mentioned the perhaps not-so-obvious: Bills don't necessarily have to have been used as an intake device to end up with trace amts. of llello on them. Contact.

I had kind of pictured them in a neat little bundle in a briefcase next to a few plastic bags.
But maybe that's too many movies talking.

Actually, how many % of Americans take cocaine / weed - that'd be your base for spreaders. Saw on a documentary on hippies recently, and the programme was tracing the after effects of the hippie movement, and one of that was drug use. It mentioned that for Americans aged between 18-24 today, somewhere like 70-80% have done soft drugs. Probably a naive question, but is it really the norm there?

I don't think it's quite that widespread. I think it's probably something more like 40%-50% of Americans between 18 and 24 have tried marijuana. Cocaine is not generally considered a "soft drug," and I suspect it also has a much lower frequency of use. I doubt there are even half as many people in the US who have tried cocaine as there are who have tried marijuana.
I'm not sure what else would be considered a soft drug, but that could alter the statistics some, especially if you start including the likes of alcohol.

Shrooms maybe?
I was thinking the same. Till recently they were legal here.
