So what do you think of old members who feel the need to return under a new name/handle. Sometimes more than once?

What do you think drives this behavior? Do you respect this kinda behavior?

Funny thing though, eventually they always seem to revert to the same behaviour that caused them trouble in the past, thereby outing themselves in blatantly obvious, and almost always humorous ways.

I think it's just artificial because IRL you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. Pretending you're someone else entirely isn't any more dishonest than having an argument and then going back to delete your posts, which isn't tolerated here. Basically you're saying, "Everything I said before wasn't really my opinion." That is why I think INTPc mods whould make a notification in a sub viewable by members only on all the members who changed their names, since it is only fair to the community.

I agree with the google thing. That's why I think it should be in a member-only subforum, or somewhere it can't be searchable. Also, changing your name from "Workskid" to "Works" is one thing, changing it completely and secretly is another very different one.

Interesting insights. I can't say I really have an opinion about it that much. Other than it seems like a curious and bothersome behavior. Also one that tends to fail, since I think in the end people connect the dots.

I suppose it could be novel to do once. But as a pattern, it makes me wonder what motivates these people's weak subterfuge? People don't form on going habits without something driving them.

Agreed. From what I have seen, (not only on this forum) is when a person leaves a forum, whether by choice or by force, and then comes back under a dupe, the same agendas and rhetoric that caused their initial departure resurface in due time. That is not to say I haven't seen it work out for everyone involved though. Sometimes changes in administration or regulars of the forum, or situations in a persons life can have a big impact on how well a person fits into a forum at different times in it's history. But, I have never seen that to be the case with posters who attempt to continue the duplicity when they have been found out. That's just tiresome.

I've honestly been considering since someone *did* track me down through google to here.

And , long ago on an internet far far away, I have had people track me from forum to forum for purposes which were ......unpleasant. Which is why I almost always use different UI's at every forum I frequent. Although, if I know people at the new forum I will freely admit my identity, which is why after some time at Typo I changed my UI to match the one here.
In addition, when I changed my username, I also had it in my sig for months to help some of more irritable members keep track of me. ;)

That said, I'd personally like to kick the trolls asses around a bit with mod powers as well, for sure.

Yep, that, in many cases. Or sometimes a username has just been too much used in multiple networks, and the member wants to hide their traces, as others pointed out.

I also guess it can be amusing to try and come here with a different identity, but then again it'd be amusing only for so long. Like a game, to see if others will recognise you or not.

I think it's actually quite effective. If, say, you get banned for life and then create a new identity, it's your only shot at getting back into the community and resuming your presumably anti-social behavior. Maybe you'll just get immediately found out and banned again but maybe, just maybe, you'll slip through the cracks. So, at worst you're in the same situation as you were before but, at best, you get to participate in and/or troll a community where you were excluded.

I feel the same way. Not sure why people do it. Assuming you are not being a phoney in the first place, why try to hide your past? Even if your behavior embarrased you, it's still part of you. It seems somewhat cowardly not to live up to it.

I can kind of understand why people might change their handle just because they don't like their first one (in my case, when I finally decided to delurk and make a post I spent about 5 seconds picking a username, never really gave it much thought).

I don't follow the search engine argument, unless you are in the habit of using the same username in many different forums. In which case, if you wish to start fresh you should pick a unique username in the first place. Perhaps this kind of advance planning is asking too much of the INTP personality type though.
