This is an interesting test: Please don't copy results above the % that say what type of music relates to the description as this would ruin the test for others. Look at my example.

Based on your responses, you scored below average on the reflective and complex music-preference dimension. Research in our laboratory indicates that people low on this dimension, like you, often have the following characteristics:

People with low scores on the reflective and complex music-preference dimension tend to be traditional, physically active, and prefer the straightforward to the complex. In addition, they're also socially dominant and, compared to high scores on this dimension, don't place much value on the fine arts. When not watching their favorite sitcoms, they enjoy watching comedy movies, action movies, musicals, or children's movies.

This seems incredibly inaccurate.

Overall the test is really lame - the 'genres' are pretty shit. "Dance/Electronica"? There is too much variation. This covers both complex and simple music. Similarly for heavy metal and others.

I've always thought that music taste or taste in films really doesn't say much about you, other than what you find a relaxing way to spend your free time. It's also cultural and even geographic - not everybody is exposed to the same kind of music from the radio, TV, etc. But I find this test quite bad and superficial, anyways.

Yeah...I tend to think that the type of music you like does say something about you. This is the first test I've come across that tries to "test" that something. If yours seem alright except one...then I would say that's pretty good for an uncharted test. How would you improve upon it? What "genres" would you use?

Ask question such as "Do you like complex music?". "Do you like music with a simple melody?", blahblahblah.

I didn't mind that much the groupings of music genres that were indeed a bit simplistic (what the hell is "International" music?), but the description of the genres that followed. I'm not sure why classical music is seen as complex while soundtracks (that often are symphonic and with classical characteristics) are "fun and simple". Folk "reflective and complex"? Why?

Perhaps people do. In fact I'd be surprised if they don't. But I just think it'd be more enlightening than asking about these crappy genres.

In my experience liking complex music says more about a person than the genres. Plus, I find that very few people like all music within a genre, but people are more likely to enjoy music if an adjective is used to identify it rather than a pidgeonhole.

(I'm only using complex music as an example here. This could be equally applied to other words.)

(Also I don't get your point about not liking jazz. EDIT: OH WAIT I GET IT I THINK SHOOSH)

I suspect Folk is considered reflective and complex because it (in Americana post 60's anyway) has become the expected outlet for songs of political unrest and introspective ramblings.

As for the soundtrack issue--the best justification would be they are using the distinction between soundtrack vs. score. A score is generally orchestral in nature--but a soundtrack is frequently culled from a top 40 chart.

However, the score for most movies, while generally orchestral in the instrumentation, also tends to be very simple compared to a symphony--or even a decent canon or fugue.

For my .02, I think music preference is an extremely superficial way to typify someone, and smacks of clique-centric thinking.

What they said.

IMO, musical taste and personality don't correlate much. There are a number of people I know who are fairly similar to me personality-wise but there's really not much overlap in the type of music we all like. The person whose musical taste is most similar to mine is ISFJ, although she tends to go for more heavy metal than I do.

This test is bogus. It reduces our musical tastes down to categories the world uses to catalog and sort cd's at fye.

I like dissonance. I find it in jazz, opera, post-modern, etc.

I'd like to kick the corpse of this poorly composed test as well. Now, soundtracks have already been mentioned, but what on earth is fun about religious music? Isn't it supposed to be solemn? A great part of the most devastatingly depressive and reflective music I've heard was religious. It's probably mistaken for the songs of all those New World ethnic minority pseudo-Christian charismatic cults. Isn't that gospel though?

Many of the genres are too broad to make conclusions. Would have been better if the authors were at least marginally familiar with the subject.

I hate that "Classical" is all its own category, while made-up nonsense subgenres like "Alternative" [to good music] or "International" [lol whut? there's more to the world than America? okay give it its own category!]. And I know they do it because people are too uncultured and stupid to know for example what "Baroque" was and if they put that on there, well, it would just confuse the fuck out of them (a new and alien experience, to be sure) and then the whole world would just fucking collapse. Best to assume the general public are as eclectic and cosmopolitan as the average serf in old Russia.

And that's another thing I dislike: people who describe their tastes (almost always musical tastes, hardly ever something else like food preferences) as "eclectic." Usually this means they consider themselves fans of more musical styles than their peers and is another way of saying how cultured, liberal and open-minded they imagine themselves to be.

I hate that because I do not lump all music that is not dominated by the song form and played by bands with singers/accompaniment/drum sets as "Classical" I am snobby, elitist and apparently narrow-minded. Hell, I consider every one of those genres except for the last two to be "pop," but of course "pop" gets its own category, as if its a real and distinct form of music. It's all just variations on rock which is just a dumbed-down version of jazz. The only innovation involved were the rarities like the Beatles, who are now just "Oldies" I suppose? Oh, whatever. Fuck labels.

But what? Classical music, which I said I liked as much as possible, has all kinds. But stupid tests like this no doubt assume it's just one. "Complex" sounds like a lump category. I bet they reserved "aggressive" for things like death metal, as if anything by just an orchestra or piano can't be 'aggressive' music. Bah. This test has no real validity.

So... What the hell does this mean? None of them are accurate. The most accurate one is the Fun&Simple.

Maybe I should explain my own results, first of all, I don't exercise much... I'm not terribly original or traditional. I think I am the happy medium. I don't have to believe in God, but I can still be a decent person and have high expectations.

I tend to be on the anxious side. I do like comedies, but I watch every genre. I don't tend to re-watch movies, especially when I'm by myself. I tend to read. I'm reading a classic, a book of essays and a parody/fantasy (whatever you'd call Terry Pratchett's writing). I also play video games. I like techno, house, dance, trance, alternative, soundtracks, etc... because I like my mood and my thinking to be complimented by what I'm listening to. My thoughts tend to be abstract or complex or quick (or a combination of). I tend to be anxious, impatient and critical when I'm thinking on something. I find trance and alternative, the slower stuff, relaxing. I find the quicker, more intricate music motivating. Some music I just like the ideas behind it.

But to be clear, I'm not really a tradish-techno person. The techno I end up listening to turns out with a singer and such, like the band Scooter. I like sound tracks from video games and animes. I especially like a lot of the music from Death Note.

Interesting interpretation but as someone mentioned earlier, the genres of music are too slippery to label properly. Also, I can think of songs or artists I've liked in almost any type of music (including Gospel, though not "Religious") and I tend to pride myself on liking a wide variety of music. Seems they're just trying to match musical tastes with personality stereotypes.

I don't know. The relationship between personality and music seems obvious to me - mutual influence. But the link is tenuous at best.

ETA: Actually, fuck that, it's not tenuous at all. My music taste and the lyrics I choose to listen to both describes and morphs me perfectly. The only limiting factor would be what kind of music I was exposed to.

Maybe the tendency to not have a connection with one's own music is itself a personality proclivity involving susceptibility.

I'm not sure I see what you mean by the bolded part above (and also, susceptibility to what?). If you mean people who choose not to identify with one specific kind of music all their lives, I'd call that analysis spurious. Many people observe their tastes in music changing gradually over time. Took a long time for me to finally develop an interest in certain kinds of music and I've heard the same from others. Other genres may have faded, but none have vanished entirely. Discovering a new kind of sound you enjoy is wonderful, but there's no need to completely discard everything you were listening to before. If that's not what you meant, I apologise, but it's the impression I get.

kali
3 May 2010, 07:02 AM
Sorry, I didn't explain myself well enough. I was getting at that some people may be innately less receptive to music simply because of how they are predisposed. Thus, their music choices are STILL a reflection of that particular personality trait (which may be that they are less susceptible to external stimuli).

Also, I think music tastes changes with time, as does personality. One's morals or values or beliefs may orient music choices. That's why music may be a good reflection of personality. I don't listen to eminem.

3 May 2010, 07:35 AM
Ah I see what you mean now. There are certainly people who see themselves as part of a certain cultural group (I mean pop &/or alternative culture primarily, but I guess this can also be based on ethnic or other groupings) and think that they therefore must listen to certain "appropriate" types of music. People can also see flaws in the politics/lifestyle/whatever of listening to a certain type of music and refuse to listen to it even if they have to fight the fact that they do enjoy the sound.

As much as I'd like to stroke my own ego and say that personality traits like open-mindedness are related to how open you are to different kinds of music, I'm not sure that's really true. There are people with an interest in music in general (often people with music training of some kind), who are therefore more willing to experiment with different kinds of music... but are they necessarily open minded in other ways? If I had to give that test a score for accuracy in describing me, it would be about 1.75 out of 4.

I went and read that thread. I was in school choirs and music classes all my public school life but I never had formal training either. (Incidentally I too was diagnosed with borderline hypothyroidism in the past.)

I still enjoy singing but I tend not to do it publicly anymore. In my choral background (which I think still influences some of my music choices today) we did mostly medieval and renaissance pieces so I still like to sing those on my own, but as a band member, I sang pop and rock songs-- which were very "alternative."

I never sing those songs anymore, however-- publicly or privately. With the exception of singing some covers (Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi and Aguas de Março by Jobim) at a charity fundraiser the other year, the closest I do is singing karaoke (and only very rarely, despite where I live).

I have had some musicians I know here in Japan ask me to sing with them but I only ended up refusing one request (they wanted me to do the soprano part of a rock version of Phantom of the Opera -- but I hate Andrew Lloyd Weber), while the other is up in the air. I know another former singer (she's probably better much better than me but I haven't had a chance to hear her!) who has done the exact same thing. (She almost joined in the fundraiser I mentioned above but mysteriously backed out. Hell, it's entirely possible that she's INTP as well...hmmm....)

Well, now that I am having a baby, I am hoping I can put that music career stuff behind me and sing again just because I love to sing.

What is "borderline" hypo for you? I was hypo for 5 years and would have been "borderline". The normal range at a lot of labs for TSH is .5-5.0 (at least here it is....) but the new values for TSH are actually .3-3.0. I was at 4.5 for so many years and had every miserable hypothyroid symptom. They always told me I had a normal TSH. I finally diagnosed myself, brought tons of literature on it with me to the doctors and got him to test me again. I am about to do battle with my endocrinologist again, today, if he refuses to raise my dosage. My TSH is "normal" but I am pregnant and want to keep my TSH at the optimal level it was before.. 0.4! Anyway, hopefully you don't have hypothyroidism. Usually "borderline" doesn't just go away, though.

What brought you to Japan? Are you from the U.S. originally?

What is "borderline" hypo for you? I was hypo for 5 years and would have been "borderline". The normal range at a lot of labs for TSH is .5-5.0 (at least here it is....) but the new values for TSH are actually .3-3.0. I was at 4.5 for so many years and had every miserable hypothyroid symptom.
It's been a few years since I was tested but I think I was usually at around 5 or 6. I took Synthroid for a long time and may have tested lower but didn't feel much better at all. It eventually got to the point where I thought levothyroxine was pointless and so I asked my doctor about it and we decided to try "Thyroid" (the non-descript name of the product obtained from pigs' glands-- like Armour Thyroid) instead. It seemed better though not quite right either, despite increasing doses. I think I was afraid to keep increasing dosage on either of those medications, however. I doubt I've ever tested lower than a TSH of 3; I was afraid I'd suddenly cross over and experience hyperthyroid symptoms but that never happened once. After a while I got irritated with it all and how nothing seemed to change much and quit taking pills. I also eventually quit avoiding soy and tofu (I had been eating lots of tofu and drinking lots of soy milk when I was first diagnosed as possibly hypothyroid, so when I read that it might affect the thyroid, that seemed to make sense). I guess I'll have to start reading about hypothyroidism again. Seems there may be some new research that could help me (and maybe my mother, who also has it) out.

What brought you to Japan? Are you from the U.S. originally?
I took the opportunity to teach English here, but I'm actually going to return to Canada in a few months.

everything we choose to listen to, everything we do, is a reflection upon some part of our personality

that's because personality is the abstract generalisation of our behaviours
Fair enough. I guess it's in the interpretation of each of these things we do that tests like this one go awry.

I tend to really love singing blues / R&B. When I hear gospel type music I can't stand it, I just want to start belting out all those awesome notes and runs with the singer. ;) I get a lot of joy out of hitting a run perfectly or belting a note out at the top of my range and then switching to head voice for the Mariah Carey squeaks lol.

Get tested for thyroid antibodies. If you have them, no amount of soy avoiding can help you. In that instance, your body is attacking your thyroid and you must suppress your TSH. (You really should be lowering your TSH a lot more, anyway.) Guess what? I still have hypo symptoms at a TSH of around 1.00-2.00! My ideal, optimized level is 0.4. I feel great at 0.4 on name brand levothroid.

When I was on Armour, I got some heart palpitations, but I had my TSH at like .09. I think the extra T3 (pig thyroid ratio of T3/T4 is a lot different than ours) was causing it, though. If my TSH was as high as you say yours was, I would feel like death all the time. I'd have really terrible depression and I would need a lot of sleep. I can't tell you how great it is to be on a high enough dosage. ;) Don't be afraid of going hyper. Just up your dosage one level at a time and pay attention to how you are feeling. If you start feeling hyper (you will definitely know), you simply cut back.

Haha, I kind of enjoy doing the same thing with opera arias if I can pull it off. But definitely can't do the high notes like I used to be able to. That's for sure.

I'm pretty sure I tested negative on the antibodies. :)

Thanks for telling me about your story. I can't say I haven't been gradually feeling worse over time. I'll definitely do some reading and talk to my doctor about it again.

overall pretty close, although, the last one seems to contradict the other results. still, even that one is a fairly accurate (i wouldn't put much stock into the income class depictions though).

This seems inaccurate, especially the low score for energetic and upbeat music. Just because I'm not into Hip-hop, Rap, Funk, or Soul, it gave me a low score on this. The other category was Electronic, which I have a strong interest in. It seems to me that lumping different kinds of electronic music together, such as House, Psy Trance, Techno, and Downtempo is as simplistic as lumping Hip-hop, Rap, Funk, and Soul together as black music. My point is that if genres were categorized differently, I would have scored higher for energetic and upbeat music. Also, it doesn't consider that Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock, and New Age can all be upbeat and energetic, and I listen to a bit of it that is.

Fun & Simple includes Pop, Religious, Country, and Soundtrack music. The last one is not any kind of genre at all. It includes both dramatic orchestral music and pop music. Religious is also not a genre. It includes anything from Amy Grant to Stryper to Bach's cantatas. Pop can be fun and simple, but it is a mixed bag. Maybe some contemporary Country is fun, but most is sad and whiny.

Edgy & Aggressive includes Alternative, Rock, and Heavy Metal music. I suppose it also includes Punk, which didn't get mentioned. I'm not into Heavy Metal, I occasionally enjoy some Punk, and I like lots of Alternative and Rock artists, but these are big umbrella genres that stuff I like and stuff I don't like. Some of it is edgy & aggressive, but that hardly characterizes a lot of the Alternative and Rock I listen to, which includes a fair amount of female singer/songwriter stuff and progressive rock. I have a strong interest in progressive rock, but by lumping all Rock together, it decreased my overall Rock preference.

Reflective & Complex included Classical, Blues, Jazz, and Folk music. I'm not much into Blues or Folk, and although they may be reflective, I don't consider them especially complex, that being one of the reasons I'm not so much into them. I'm also not into Blues because it tends to be sad. Note that I'm not including instrumental Jazz pieces rooted in the Blues. I enjoy lots of Classical and Jazz, and much of it is reflective and complex, but not all of it is. There is a huge amount of variety in both Classical and Jazz, and these could have been broken down into several subgenres.

All I listen to is rap music. The rap music I listen to is not edgy or aggressive. It's reflective and complex, as well as energetic and upbeat.

They got it down as energetic and upbeat.

Asher Roth - His Dream

This song is nowhere near energetic.
